I went to Sainsbury's this morning. I thought it would be quiet at 07:00 but it was surprisingly busy; not packed out, but considerably busier than it is when I usually go at the same time on a Saturday.
For some reason it was almost completely out of pan scourers, so perhaps those are the new toilet rolls. Metaphorically. I hope.

I went for a walk yesterday, and passed by the Angel M&S, Waitrose and Sainsbury's (all basically one next to the other), and Tesco (5 mins further up the road) - there were people queuing in front of all of them, on my way there and back (about an hour apart). So I walked to Camden, and found the same to be the case in front of Sainsbury's, Lidl and Aldi. The same thing repeated in Islington earlier today. So I learned my lesson, and walked to the Lidl on Tottenham Court Road, and there was no line there. Nobody (but me) does their main grocery shopping on a currently dead/closed major shopping street, it seems.
I'm starting to think I've missed the memo on the return of panic buying.

Had to queue outside Waitrose for half an hour at lunchtime today but could get all the bits I needed, though it was only a top up shop getting the few things Sainsbury's had not stocked or run out of (Mascarpone, quince paste) and then picking cheeses for the cheese board as a trip top Neal's Yard is out this year. Very fortunate that I was down with mum for work reasons when tier 4 was announced so our Christmas plans haven't changed.

I don't know if this is a reaction to London going into lockdown at short notice but Google is saying the Marks and Spencer near me (which has a decent food hall) is open 8am to 11.00pm - on CHRISTMAS DAY and Boxing Day ..not sure that can be right Google has come to its senses and decided M&S can close on the 25th and 26th.
Open tonight and tomorrow 'til midnight locally but not everywhere. This is the healthy option, folks!

I'm starting to think I've missed the memo on the return of panic buying. The 2/3 households that were going to be having Christmas dinner elsewhere now need to buy their own, on 4 days’ notice. And they have to physically shop for it as it’s too late to get it delivered. And they probably need to get something in for Boxing Day as well.

Had quick walk at lunch and frankly it seemed to sum 2020 up as the b*****d it is. I 'rescued' a worm from the road from getting squashed, popped it under a hedge and to my horror beacuse i dropped it the last few inches it fell and impaled on a giant thorn on the hedge. I don't know how well a worm survives on major trauma but felt I had taken it from possible death to more certain and felt engulfed in guilt. Walk subsequently became an internal rant of all the things I'd like to scream at certain people in power about everything wrong with the country. I think your worm will survive - they can re-grow their tails, after all. Would not have survived being crushed by a car. As penance today I 'rescued' two more (including one who really didn't want to be rescued thank you very much, it quite liked being squashed) and much more carefully placed them in what I hoped was a safe space.

Waitrose is advertising it's Xmas cherry and amaretti tiffin on A boards in front of all it's outlets, yet I cannot get any.
Such a let down, partner's been looking forward to getting one ever since waitrose started sending us emails about it. Such a let down... no Xmas tiffin for us yet we have to endure the picture of it every time we pass the store.

I'm in that same boat, actually: I was supposed to be going away for Christmas, and got stuck in London instead. But somehow I don't feel comfortable shopping in a crowd amidst the pandemic, and everywhere I go there are lines and huge numbers of people waiting to get in. It's a bit uncomfortable and frustrating for all of us, I presume. Just part of the 2020 experience.

For the first time I have had a sense of discomfort about the high streets. It's far too busy, too many teenagers just don't think and Covid feels all around. I'm going to avoid all of it now. Late night supermarket shopping has a kind of cinematic quality about it, anyway. A bit Cohen Brothers.
A guy I know is suffering from long Covid and just can't shake it off, pauses at the top of stairs, taking naps through the day, etc. He's about 40, a marathon runner, regular 20-mile runs every Sunday morning, not an ounce of fat on him. Says he would never have believed it possible.
Feels that this final stretch is where you should be most vigilant.

The joy of taking a lunch break at 7 am is that you can go to the supermarkets and admire well stocked shelves. Christmas lunch is now saved as I have everything but fresh parsley. 3 shops didn't have any but I do do have a miniscule plant on my balcony that I can strip away so all is well with with the world... Well apart from Trump, Johnson, Covid, Brexit and Global warming

Nobody (but me) does their main grocery shopping on a currently dead/closed major shopping street, it seems. There's a Lidl on Tottenham Court Road? Things have changed since I left London in early March, from maps it looks like it's where Sainsbury's was. I'd been known to get off a bus, pop in there, then on the next/or second next bus. Shame it's gone but I guess I can pop into Lidl instead now when I get back.

dippy, yes. It opened a few months ago, and I think you are right about there being a Sainsbury's there before. There's still a Sainsbury's at the other end of the same street, close to Primark/Oxford Street, too.

I guess I liked it because it was never busy (didn't ever go in at lunch time/end of work time though) which I guess isn't really a good thing, and yes, there is another just down the road, kind of makes sense to not need them both. May venture in to Lidl's there one day!

It's a rather complicated junction to navigate, but there's also a Sainsbury's at the bottom of Hampstead Road. Cannibalisation is the word used in the industry. Anyway, Forrest, as your Christmas plans have unexpectedly changed (or been changed for you), I've slotted Mark Gatiss into tonight's BBC2 schedule. Though with your superpowers, you've probably already watched it! 🙂 And don't forget that Owain Wyn Evans is doing something special on local radio tomorrow afternoon. Only in the north, mind, so you'll need to choose somewhere like BBC Radio Sheffield, or York, or even...Manchester. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've a few last minute 'bits' to buy.

It's all going swimmingly here! After years of a senior management culture focused on asset stripping and board-level bonuses, it seems the new Royal Mail board realises it's in the middle of a retail revolution and has agreed to a planning and investment strategy with the union. All we've known since privatisation is cost cutting, closures and blind personal greed. Anyway, the upshot of all that is that, this morning, I got confirmation of a better job for me, a pay rise and a new location. Hurrah! To celebrate, I've just now acquired a lovely Heals tallboy chest of drawers (god I love Heals furniture ) Still need to go to the post office but I have a podcast ready ...

My sister and family biked over, her and the small ones in their icecream seller style bike decorated with tinsel, to deliver cards and drop off some presents from the end of the drive. The small ones shouted ho ho ho at the people they passed and I hope made them smile.
My road did a socially distanced bell ring then carols in the freezing cold this evening. In the days of clapping a musical family bought out their keyboard and did a song each week. Turns out it's much less inhibiting singing songs you've known for years in the dark. Was a rather lovely half hour of flashes of torch light and singing and trying to stay warm.

I've just been out for a walk on this wonderfully crisp and clear morning. In the local graveyard quite a few of the graves have been decorated with miniature Christmas trees complete with lights, which looked lovely in the dark. I'd probably not have noticed during the day. (Because walking through a graveyard at night is a perfectly normal thing and absolutely nothing at all to do with this post.)

Not your usual Christmas morning:
Completed a 100Km virtual cycle ride, was aiming for 75Km as had ridden a 100Km yesterday but just kept going as there wasn’t much else to do. At least I am now 200Km in the Rapha Festive 500 (ride 500Km between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve) and can take it easy from now on but not sure if that’s how it will pan out.
Will now go for an afternoon walk to give the legs another modus operandi before settling down to some TV and Chocolate and contemplate what to have for tea as have not done a ‘Christmas Shop’ and will likely settle for a Pizza.
The polar opposite of last year where the Flu left me bed ridden and walking to the bathroom was quite a chore.

We went for a walk at lunchtime in the hope everyone else would be at home having Christmas dinner but unfortunately quite a few people were out & about. I imagine tomorrow will be even worse.

I went for a long walk today too, to make good use of the wonderful weather: Islington to Sloane Square and back via Marble Arch/Tottenham Court Road. There weren't too many people around, except in Hyde Park which was pretty busy, but it was just so lovely that I decided against stressing about it and simply tried to keep my distance with a smile.
I've been doing long walks since my winter holiday started, and they genuinely do wonders for my overall "sanity" and well-being. Just me and (mostly) Ian Kenny or Jan-Henrik Ohme (in my headphones, not in person, clearly :) ) these days, perfect! I'm considering going back to running (I've been on a hiatus from that for a while now...) if the weather stays like this, although now that I've said that I will likely summon all the thunderstorms from tomorrow, because, London...

My first Christmas in London since 2002, we always visit family but obviously not this year.
We went for a long walk to chelsea and belgravia and we were hunting for any coffee shops that were open. We found 2 and stopped for a take away coffee just off Sloane Square (@forrest). It was a lovely stop in sunny London.
Once at home champagne and elaborate cooking finished off the day.
