We’ve decided we can meet outside to exchange presents at least (1 person from each household) so I still have mine to wrap.
But now I have to buy food - I thought I’d be at my parents’ for the allowed 4 days, and have been isolating all week in preparation, and consequently have nothing in for Christmas. I’ve just got my tree down from the loft - I usually don’t bother putting it up because I’m not here, and it seems too much effort for just me.
*hollow laugh*

I finally got around to putting the tree up today. I knelt on a light. Ooh, you do not want to be doing that.

Oh I know and the daft thing is I think reading all day etc is a perfectly sensible way to spend my time but it's like there's always someone on my shoulder I feel the need to justify myself to, I never used to be this way, just got to a point and I realised I was listing what I had done over and over again like some kind of worthiness mantra. I'm glad I don't have that sort of conscience - I can happily read all day & not feel at all guilty about it! I finally got around to putting the tree up today. I knelt on a light. Ooh, you do not want to be doing that. Ouch! Hope you didn't get shards of glass in your knee, especially as now is really not the time to have to go anywhere near A&E.

I think reading all day etc is a perfectly sensible way to spend my time Sounds good to me! (Ignore that idiot on your shoulder... if they don't appreciate reading they don't have anything sensible to say!) If you're the type of person who falls into the world of a good book, have you read the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde? It takes that concept literally.

I was lucky that it didn't break, but it really dug in and hurt for a surprisingly long time after. Not something I'd want to do twice.

I have not, will see if they're in my library e books. See I could easily have read for a week off.

Ahh yes must be lots of people looking at an empty fridge and sighing. I will be hiding on the day from my parents who loathe each other and so are always in sepearte houses on christmas day (but for reason still live together) so happy to chat on here for any lone people finding it tough. My sister has suggested she could ride her bike with it's giant box thing on the front (it's fit 2 kids in it with space enough for a shop) and we thought I could throw presents at her. It would count as her exercise and I guess mine too if i'm throwing from my door step?

I could never get into the Thursday Next books but other than "The Constant Rabbit" which I just haven't bought yet I've enjoyed all his other books. Nursery Rhyme Crimes were fun and I loved the Dragonslayer books. I'm still sad there isn't a sequel to "Shades of Grey", which thankfully seems to have been renamed to "Shades of Grey 1: The Road to High Saffron" so that means we'll hopefully get the other two parts one day. I have "The Eyre Affair" in my bookshelf, maybe I should give it another go.

I have "The Eyre Affair" in my bookshelf, maybe I should give it another go. 'The Eyre Affair' and the last book in the series were my favorites. In between, it got a little convoluted and moved away from the whole "books are real worlds" aspect which is what I really liked. Thanks for the mention of other books... I'll go download samples!

The Thursday books are very good if you like that kind of thing. For me, it wore off after one book. Peggs, your sister should def ride her bike round with its box and we can all chuck pressies at her. Will start a trend.

Today was as strange as Sundays get: I spent the whole day on Skype with friends and family (and a journalist for the news from back home, which was admittedly an odd plot twist), because everyone wanted to talk about - you guessed it - the new Tier 4 measures in London.
If there is such thing as Skype-fatigue, I am pretty sure I have that. I'm also just absolutely dead tired.

Took delivery of a parcel at the weekend. It was a present from my boss and contained alcohol. Delivery driver wanted my date of birth?? Said I'm not happy giving you that information and he was going to take the parcel away. Despite my pleas I have very definitely hit middle age and my boyish good looks have long since departed he wouldn't deliver my parcel and insisted on a date of birth. I gave him 23 April 1564 as a date to prove I was over eighteen years old and he seemed quite happy I was born on the same day as William Shakespeare.

Crazy busy day at work, result of all this rain, operation stack and shut ports and new tiers. Stumbled from one call to another.
Had quick walk at lunch and frankly it seemed to sum 2020 up as the b*****d it is. I 'rescued' a worm from the road from getting squashed, popped it under a hedge and to my horror beacuse i dropped it the last few inches it fell and impaled on a giant thorn on the hedge. I don't know how well a worm survives on major trauma but felt I had taken it from possible death to more certain and felt engulfed in guilt. Walk subsequently became an internal rant of all the things I'd like to scream at certain people in power about everything wrong with the country.
My sister tried telling my dad today that he could not come into her house (we'll ignore all the previous months he's just let himself in). He said he could as he lives on his own. He lives with me and his wife. So wishful thinking on his part I think. Have volunteered to be on call for work all christmas now, frankly seemed like might be the better option.
On a brighter note a kind soul gifted me a ticket for the Old Vic tonight and it was just wonderful.

I think this deserves a quote and some love, because it's just so wonderful! :) (I don't think there's anything I love more than someone gifting me experiences they know I'll enjoy, and especially when they come as a surprise, so I'm grinning at your post like it was me who got the ticket!)

Morrison's is open until midnight so I'm off to face the zombie apocalypse at Camberwell Green. The things I do for breast fillets.

well that's Christmas sorted; a large jar of Haywood pickled onions, and 5 out-of-date cheese board selections.

Thankfully it wasn’t too bad and plenty of stuff available on the shelves. Unfortunately no tubs of Roses or Celebrations to be had anywhere in the store 😡. Looks like a trip to Asda or Tesco tomorrow night after work to hunt one down!

I don't know if this is a reaction to London going into lockdown at short notice but Google is saying the Marks and Spencer near me (which has a decent food hall) is open 8am to 11.00pm - on CHRISTMAS DAY and Boxing Day ..not sure that can be right

Just a heads-up about car parking over Christmas because I know some people were caught out by this a few years ago.
This year 26th December is not a bank holiday, so if you park somewhere that has free parking on bank holidays you will still need to pay on Saturday. The Boxing Day bank holiday is on the 28th. There are a number of rapacious councils and car parking companies who are fully aware of people's expectation that the day after Christmas Day will be a bank holiday so they may turn out in force to make it a very happy Christmas for themselves.

I think your worm will survive - they can re-grow their tails, after all. Would not have survived being crushed by a car.

My local lidl was verging on the desolate. I may have to rethink my Christmas lunch plans. Yikes

The Boxing Day bank holiday is on the 28th. I visited London from the US with my family in the mid-80s. All went well until Christmas Eve... a Thursday, like this year. Everything (shops, museums, activities) stopped at noon and didn't resume until Tuesday the 29th. Cab drivers kept asking us, "why are you here?" My dad finally started responding with a quote from the movie Casablanca... "I was misinformed!"
