Today's conundrum: Why did they make fallen leaves exactly the same colour as woofy whoopsies?

I asked a little boy who his favourite super hero was today and he said 'SpiderMan' I'm pretty awful with little kids but I liked that one

Oooooohhhhhhhhh! I've been all day pondering profusely......of course, monkeys have thumbs and ergo can open cans........albeit not very carefully apparently!

Oooooohhhhhhhhh! I've been all day pondering profusely......of course, monkeys have thumbs and ergo can open cans........albeit not very carefully apparently! This reminds me of seeing an operatic version of Alice In Wonderland where the White Rabbit was in a cage & explained that he couldn't get out because rabbits don't have opposable thumbs. That was my favourite line in the entire show! Having just looked it up on Wikipedia, monkeys apparently have incompletely opposable thumbs, but evidently it's good enough for can opening!

Didn't happen opening the can... did when slicing the roll... and that is not a euphemism. Why is it that when someone says "that is not a euphemism" I give a little snort and think "does anyone really believe that?".

Why do Blu-rays and DVDs have trailers at the start? What are they expecting us to think? "I wasn't interested enough in this to see it in the cinema but now I have the chance to see it on the small screen for a higher price I think I'll give it a go"? Or perhaps "Even though home video has been around for 40 years and I'm watching some right now I didn't realise that other films might be available"?

Well, today I got a little taste of life pre-internet.
My autistic nephew has asked for a couple of toys for Christmas, which he saw in an actual toy catalogue. As you may know, autistic children tend to be very specific about things, so it was those particular toys only, not something like them, that he wants.
Those toys are only available from that toyshop chain - I can't find the same ones on Amazon - and are not available for home delivery. They should have been available from the nearest physical shop, though.
So after I finished work I hopped on the train and then a bus to the actual physical toy-shop, only to find that one of them was out of stock, and can't be ordered in as they've been discontinued (hence not finding them on Amazon). To get both toys I have to go to the next nearest physical shop - which is another half hour away on the train. They have 2 left in the other shop, which means I have to go tonight, really, to make sure I get one. If they sell out at that shop the next nearest one with them in is about 50 miles away.
So, back on the bus to the train station, just miss the train (obviously), wait 10 minutes for the next one, change to the other line and have to wait 20 minutes for a connection, get off the train and walk 15 minutes to the toyshop, and hooray! Buy toys. Walk back to train station, have to wait 30 minutes for train. Now on train back home. It has been 4 hours since I left home and we're just arriving back at the town the first toyshop is in. It'll take me another 30 minutes to actually get home.
How did people used to do this all the time?! No wonder everyone was so stressed about Christmas. I'm never complaining about home delivery charges ever again.

I went down Memory Lane almost literally yesterday and saw "Cats". I know the show doesn't have many friends here but for me it was the "gateway drug" to musicals in the 80s along with "Starlight Express" so when the International Tour (with a cast from the UK) announced a stop virtually on my doorstep in Cologne, I knew I had to go.
Personally I still think it holds up well and "Memory" is still one of the most dramatic and beautiful moments in musical theatre for me. Sure, it's more a revue of various cats doing their thing than one big plot, but I've always admired the amazing choreography and yesterday I also couldn't help thinking how much creativity it takes to lift poems off the written page and give them each a different melody that fits the particular character. Sometimes entertainment is just what people want and not something "deep" and "heady" and for me "Cats" is still pretty much perfect in that.

Don't tell BurlyBeaR, but I've just been listening to Michaela Strachan on the wireless, plugging her upcoming arena tour. I had no idea until I checked on the interweb, but she said that before she went down the presenting route, and all the wildlife stuff, she was actually involved in musical theatre. How different things could have been. She could have had her own thread, and everything!!!

Friend on platform as someone jumped in front of train Kings Cross tube. Was supposed to meet at Courtauld. So went up to meet her. She was very shocked but we eventually made our way to Courtauld to see the Soutine portraits of servants.
Life in London I suppose.

And I for one wouldn't be unhappy with the utterly gorgeous Annette Bening finally getting a well deserved Oscar for it either.

I'm not sure I should admit this, @ryan, but, in your owns words, I really rather enjoyed that.
There are, I'm sure, board members who saw her in 7 Brides for 7 Brothers in the mid-80s. I am, of course, far too young myself!

This morning a webcomic I read made reference to a 7-Eleven drink size called a "Big Gulp". It is, apparently, huge. At one time they did a size called "Double Gulp" that was twice as large: 64 ounces, they say. The only imperial units of volume I do are pints (because beer and milk) so I'll need to convert 64 ounces to something I understand. I expect it's probably about a pint and a Holy crap it's four pints. They did a four pint cup. That's twice the size of a stomach.
Those big two litre bottles of fizzy drinks you can get? It's 14% bigger than that. As a single serving.
(They've since downsized them a little so they'll fit in a car cup holder, but it still beggars belief that there was a demand for such a drink as a single serving.)

Something I've only recently learned about American culture is there's an understanding that the massive portions you are served aren't to be consumed in a single sitting. Restaurants expect you to take your leftovers home for lunch/dinner the next day. A Big Gulp is still a helluva lot to get through in a single day,but the understanding is that it will take you a good part of the day to get through it, rather than you drinking it all at once.

Yes, indeed. Once had a pasta portion in Boston the leftovers of which kept daughter going for two days. We were visiting, she was living there. Dunno about ice cream!

Convinced that Michaela Strachan record saved my singles collection. My brother bought it for the free poster, I ended up with the record. At that time I had all my singles in alphabetical order. My flat got broken into and all my stuff was rifled through, but when I got to my record collection it was all out of order but this was at the front. To this day I think the thieves found this, realised If that was in there, there would be nothing else of value and left them alone!
So thanks Michaela!!

I had a filling replaced this afternoon so currently can't feel a quarter of my mouth. Dinner (scrambled eggs) is going to be interesting... I don't have any theatre booked this weekend in case of toothache.

In which year did I go to sleep, only to wake up in 2017 to find it suddenly ok to listen to videos on your phone in public without headphones? It's bad enough on the train, but I went to the hairdresser's after work for a lovely relax after the cacophony that is my day job - always worse on a Friday. They had the radio coming through the speakers quite loud, which meant that the girl next to me had to turn her volume up in order to hear the hideous action racket that was emanating from her phone in full horrendous, tinny, grating, headache-inducing form. I gave her a look. She gave me one back, then went back to her screen without even bothering to roll her eyes or shrug. I moved places (they already know I'm a fussy b^gger and were happy to let me choose where I sat!) and then ended up next to her again later at the hair washing sinks........where she actually carried on watching her video whilst being shampooed. How much do I hope her screen got well and truly sprayed. In other news.......I just heard words that made me reach for the remote control faster than a cat shooting past an oriental kitchen...."And now to sing us out with his new single please welcome......Jason Manford!..." (Yes, you did hear that right!)

I'm in US and am still horrified at the size of some dishes. Some of the dishes I wouldn't eat as leftovers on a bet. Even the so called "Senior Plates" are so huge. Big Gulps are good for parties. You pour out half then fill with ice and rum. Last you all night. As the ice melts that drink becomes a bit more diluted, which is how I like them. Plus you can rightfully claim "I only had one drink all night"

Fed up with the ridiculous "Leaf fall " timetable at my station. If a train can run I don't see why it has to go sailing past without stopping. I checked a few days ago & they said they were reverting to normal after yesterday. - Now they aren't for another week at least. So on Monday when I'm seeing a show there will only be one train an hour stopping at my station instead of 4.
