Just announced as part of the Sydney Theatre Company's 2017 season, running from 6th November 2017.
"The film’s original writer-director PJ Hogan has updated his screenplay into a dazzling new stage show, bringing the story into the present but keeping all the irreverence and naughtiness of the film along with its dark edge.
Director Simon Phillips (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) leads a stellar creative team, with eye-popping sets and costumes from Gabriela Tylesova (Love Never Dies) and original music by award-winning singer-songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. With a big cast and a live band, this will be the theatre event of the year.
With songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus & Stig Anderson originally written for ABBA "

If it's bad, who is going to be the first critic to use the headline "It's terrible, Muriel" for their review?

I think there are critics who have already decided that they will hate it just so they can do that exact thing.
Alternatively you might get the odd 'It's not terrible, Muriel"

I feel this is (a little) overdue.
You're terrible Muriel!

This is fairly standard pricing for Sydney theatre.

So it's using original music with Abba? How interesting...

Oooh, Justine Clarke, star of 'Home & Away: The Musical'! How lovely. I detect Sarcasm These days she's more known here as a children's performer and Playschool presenter, although she does the occasional adult acting job too. I last saw her two years ago in Children of the Sun.

'Muriel' (spoiler alert - 'Mariel') looks quite like her mum. I suspect if she has her mum's comedy and singing ability, she could be fantastic.

Ray Meagher was meant to play the Dad wasn't he.

Is this a good or bad casting?

I think the casting is great. If it all works out it has the possibility to be huge with West End, Broadway, German, tours galore etc - or it could go the Beaches, Amelie, Viva Forever route and not work. Fingers crossed it is a big gigantic HIT new show!!

For those who may be interested in one of the songwriters for the musical, Kate Miller-Heidke, she's a really interesting singer, songwriter and actress who has combined pop, folk and opera throughout her career. She's also won a Helpmann Award (Australia's Tonys) for Best Original Score for 'The Rabbits' so the musical should be in safe hands. Her most recent album is a live album with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Here is one of my favourite songs of hers, O Vertigo!, from her show with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (even if she forgets some of the words). It'll be really interesting to hear what she comes up with for 'Muriel's Wedding'.
