I may be completely wrong but Ruth's entertaining "comedy" routine tonight might save her in the public vote which means that a better dancer will leave! How right I was!!!!

Anyone other than Ruth going was a joke though, she's the worst left by miles and I don't understand what could possibly be motivating people to vote for her! I normally can't stand Ruth (with or without her even more dreadful husband) but I have to say that her dance this week was wonderfully entertaining. It certainly got my vote. And I imagine that's what motivated other people to vote for her too.

I think up until Blackpool it's fine for the 'entertaining' contestants to stay- it is after all an entertainment show. If the nation wanted Proper Serious Ballroom we'd have that broadcast from actual pros- Strictly is an entertainment show about dancing. And also all of the 'comedy' ones this year have all improved and are genuinely trying to dance, and for me seeing people LEARN to dance is the joy of Strictly- they'll get weeded out before the end and won't win, but I adore seeing people giving it a good old go and getting a bit better. I'm not saying Aston should have gone out (he is better than others I'd have said Jonnie to go this week personally much as I love him, and he's better than Mollie but actually not in that dance off). But I am saying there's space for a bit of Ruthie still at this stage.

I have to say I'm of the view that it's an entertainment show and so the combination of entertainment and an element of ability should win. I love seeing the effort some people are putting into it and I don't think Blackpool should be the line drawn as the time for anyone to have had their run on the show curtailed. I'd much rather see the likes of Debbie, Joe, Jonnie or Susan go through and win, at least they have personalities to go with their varying abilities and have given us some memorable routines. As good as Gemma, Mollie and Alexandra may be, they've got all the personality of a bath plug and it's all just too polished and cold for me, you can see the sheer naked ambition in their eyes. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them in the queue if the fire alarm went off! If I wanted to see "perfection" I'd go and see one of them starring in Craig Revel Horwood's next production. As it is, it's a fluffy Saturday night TV show. The world is depressing enough as it is, let's have someone fun winning Strictly.

Amen Ryan! my favourite winner is still little Chris Hollins- a man who was not a natural dancer to begin with but learned and entertained his way to the final. He was in no way technically the most proficient but he put such personality into his dances and that's what I'm after in Strictly.
By that measure this year I'd love for Joe (great 'performer' and improving week on week) Debbie (Yes trained, but an older woman who hasn't danced in years and bags of personality) Susan (Knows she'll never be the best but damn well giving it her all and improving) or Jonnie (Obvious disadvantages, comes from an entirely different 'world' but again improving and giving it his all)
Than the already fully polished/formed performer that is Alexandra or even Aston (the latter I'd have preferred over the two at least). I watch Strictly for a giggle and entertainment!

A lot of it is down to the dancers fan Base. Ruth and Anton have big fan bases so will carry on in the competition until we are down to the last few. Jonnie will get votes (rightly or wrongly) because of his disability and I think Ashton didn't get the votes as most of the younger audience are watching X Factor on the other side. A lot of the Strictly audience don't have a clue who he is and so as soon as he had a weak performance then he is on dodgy ground. I'd love to see Debbie win as she is so determined and great to see an older person up there on top.

Just be to devil's advocate here but I see a lot of criticism of the personalities of Alexandra/Mollie/Gemma but is anyone else finding Susan's continual stream of superlatives a bit boring now?
She is a nice woman but every answer she gives is either telling us what a supreme being Kevin is or what the 'show is all about': giving it your all/bouncing back/having fun. Basically anything that fits her experience that week.
I think Susan came in fully prepared to have her life changed by SCD and as such it is all starting to feel a little forced and saccharine now.

Nope, not just you. I like Susan, but also think she's innately super competitive and ambitious in everything she does (not a bad thing!), and is a great student at the 'Kevin From Grimsby School of How To Get To The Final Of Strictly'!! He has combined her limited ability with an on-screen devotion to imbuing every theme or song with deep meaning for her (or both of them). I did believe her about Bring Me Sunshine being her first dance with her wife - that one, I'm pretty sure she requested as a song. The other stuff, I started side-eying her this week when she declared This Ole House by Shakin' Stevens as mega important to her because 'it was the first song she ever bought'! The endless upbeatness about her is slightly grating now - I'm certain she's a lovely woman, and is actually enjoying her time on the show - but (much like Kelly Bright's year on Strictly), they're getting to the 'overselling it all' stage now! Much like Kevin's partnership with Kellie Bright, I'm at the stage where I'm watching two fully adult people acting like kids on a sugar high, and it's driving me a little nuts!

That's exactly it. Both Kevin and Susan are very aware that, if you aren't a brilliant dancer (and sometimes even if you are), then you need a story on Strictly. Fair play to them, but my patience is wearing a bit thin with the two of them.

Better to have a story than to be so bland and uninteresting that nobody cares. Has Mollie uttered one memorable sentence in the last seven weeks?

What's Gemma's story? We've not seen a b/f, a g/f, a hubbie or a 'waif'... Not even a mum, a dad, or- when we're really stretching it- a nan. Apart from a handful of Aljaz's crotch during that god-awful lift on Saturday evening*, I'm not sure what she's got. At least Susan and Ruth are adding a bit of 'entertainment'.
(* If you didn't catch it, watch it back! It's quite funny and Aljaz laughs and says something to her!)

I had to smile when, on the results show, Susan said that Strictly was the best thing that had ever happened to her (or words to that effect). It doesn't say much for the day she met her wife for the very first time, or their courtship, or wedding day!

I didn't know what to do. I had to grab the first thing that came to hand." Likely story Gemma, likely story.

(* If you didn't catch it, watch it back! It's quite funny and Aljaz laughs and says something to her!) Didn't catch that - was too busy wincing at the sheer clunkiness of the lifts, that all had the air of poor Aljaz hoisting a large bag of spuds into his arms! Will need a rewatch, clearly! As for Gemma's story, well she's very carefully not denying the tabloid rumours that she and Gorka are pairing up and, apparently, making Alexandra 'livid'! It does make her mildly more interesting than poor Mollie, who's yet another bland blonde (Laura Whitmore, Helen George, Rachel Riley, Ali Bastian etc) - all of whom had varying levels of dance ability, but were all a total bore to watch! They seemed to be trying to push a 'most improved' storyline onto her, until it became very clear that she really wasn't! Both girls will probably leave before either Susan or Ruth, which is probably as it should be, if we're valuing entertainment - they need to lose a couple of female celebs though, as they're now down to just 3 out of the 10 celebs being men. I suspect Jonnie and Joe are reasonably safe for now, but I'm betting Davood gets saved, if he ends up in the danger zone, just to keep the balance a little.

Gemma looks like she could eat Gorka for breakfast and still have room for a stack of pancakes! With maple syrup. The poor little lad... I reckon she could have her work cut out for her if she did have any designs that way. Know what I mean?

Alexandra can't say one thing without being accused of something negative.

missbabs has reminded me- We had a tribute to Prince this week which was nice. Isn’t it about time we had a tribute to Victoria Wood? With special guest appearances by Julie Walters and co? Barry and Freda? The Tip Top Tap? Come on pros! We know you could do it!

There has to be some semblance of dance progress and ability along with the entertainment, otherwise it might as well be called Strictly Come Faffing Around... It would be completely ridiculous if Gemma or Mollie left before Ruth (though I expect the latter probably will).

To be honest I’ve never considered dance to be anything other than ‘faffing around’... And I say this as someone who grew up telling everyone I loved Drama, and without exception everyone would reply, “But isn't that just pretending to be trees?”
