I hate to generalise, but I suspect TheatreBoard members do not ordinarily listen to Radio 5 Live on a Saturday night. That being the case, I suspect almost everyone missed a programme last Saturday called Puttin' on the Glitz: The Strictly Story. If it works, this is the link for anyone who wants to 'catch up': www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b094swcs

I don't mind the all in one show, the danger of the Friday was that they only have 6 celebs and if they all end up average it can be a bit dull.
Plus the second week has as many celebs and that is done all in one so that episode is just as long as the first one is this time.

Meanwhile, Ore Oduba has been announced as the host of the 2018 Strictly tour, which CRH will be directing once again. Will there be a band or will the dancers have to play their own instruments?!

Ola made a few blokes play with their instruments over the years.

I'm mystified by what they have done and the vast majority of people I know also hate it but then they have held their audience when TV audiences in general are falling. It doesn't help that they have also taken to hiring pros with minimal ballroom and latin experience. Janette seems a nice woman and her salsa is incredible but when it comes to the traditional dances compared to past pro's like Erin, Natalie and Karen (Hardy not Clifton who is not much better) she just isn't in the same league and it shows. With the men why keep Anton and Brendan around when neither seem particularly interested anymore when you have a proper world champion like Neil Jones on the sub bench. What's mystifying about it? What they've done is to create a super-successful, good old all-round Entertainment Programme which appeals to all age-groups for prime time Saturday night viewing! My guess is that most of us who tune in wouldn't know a 'highly skilled' pro dancer from a mere 'very good' one, especially when a lot of the time they should be toning down their skills when dancing with their inexperienced celebrity. I absolutely love the group dances and sit in awe at what they manage to turn out week in week out. Some of you might be experts but I reckon that Joe Public just takes it for what it is. The pros they have hired in recent years must have helped... you state yourself that the programme has held its audience where others fail. The reason they keep on Anton and Brendan is because they are popular- with the production team, and with many of the (older?) viewers. Apparently they are great characters backstage. If it had stood still it wouldn't be where it is today. It would have been wiped from the schedule just like Come Dancing.

Hence why I mentioned the ratings are still there so they must know something.
But it was already a 'a super-successful, good old all-round Entertainment Programme which appeals to all age-groups for prime time Saturday night viewing!' before they dumbed it down.
Though it's supposed appeal to all age groups is limited, it actually has a very old slanting audience 35-40% of which are over 65 and always have been.

Calaphas, I disagree. We non dancers can tell the difference. In the Olympics, we can see the brilliant gymnasts and appreciate the differences and good commentary can assist. Brendan and Anton are characters in the 'soap' aren't they?

Brendan and Anton are characters in the 'soap' aren't they? In the Olympics we can see their feet! If we're lucky, we get to see a lot more besides! The cameramen capture a lot more of the sporting performance. In Strictly the cameras hide a lot of the footwork, and the 'production' of the piece can mask a multitude of sins (dry ice, screens, props etc) so I'm not convinced that your eye is trained to distinguish between an excellent pro dancer and a bloody good all-rounder. Yes, Anton's Latin efforts are grim so he mugs his way through, and it's at points like this that the show crosses successfully from a straightforward Dance Competition to an Entertainment. vdcni has missed my point that if the show had stayed as it was it would have lost viewers over the years. The 'dumbing down' has been instrumental in its success!

Oh and why does every VT need to be a comedy or fake day out these days, well I say comedy but none of the pros and most of the celebs don't have the skills required to make them genuinely amusing, rather than the training footage we used to get. Again around Blackpool and theme weeks then ok but not every week. Oh I so agree with this. (Well, I would say Kevin can do it but you'll all shout at me and I'm feeling vulnerable...) I used to love watching the training footage - it really showed how they struggled and also what their relationship was like together.

Brendan does seem a bit uninterested sometimes but Anton is always useful to pair an older female up with and he actually has a personality which some of the other male dancers don't. Erin and Kristina left to start families, Natalie chose to leave so did Vincent and Flavia so there may not have been as many changes if some of these had stayed.
Janette and I think Ote have talked about leaving after this year so that would mean more newer females next year too.

As much as I dislike the VTs, during very long shows, like tomorrow, they do allow one to take a comfort brake without missing anything important.

The VTs are fine when they are training footage. The fake days out and 'comedy' are designed for simpletons though.

Surprised if they both leave, especially Oti

I read it somewhere that Oti said it might be her last year. Janette and Aljaz recently got married although they have been a professional and personal couple for a number of years. In the press around the wedding Janette mentioned it may be her last year - I could understand this as she turns 34 in a few weeks and may want to consider starting a family for example. Doing another year of Strictly would mean she'd then be 35 and thus nearing 36 if she wanted a family for example. They already have tour dates scheduled for next spring so she will certainly be dancing then but may be open minded about another year of Strictly.
Erin left Strictly to have a family but still does her tours with Anton. Interestingly we have never had a female dancer return after having a baby and off the top of my head I think Karen Hardy was only female pro who was a mum when she joined the show.
I've tried to find where I saw about Oti but cannot but as Stagey says above, I'd be more surprised it Oti left compared to Janette though.

Well, that was crap. The only people I'll turn on for next week are Claudia and Shirley. Poor Kevin. And whose idea was it to give Brian red shoes to make all his faults stand out?
Agree Debbie was amazing. Liked jive boy, but it's a shame he did that in week 1. No one else rocked my boat. Loved Darcy's dress.

Really liked Shirley (but as I said it was a relief to see Len go). By week three she’ll be part of the furniture.
Debbie was great and I love that song. What a great start for her.
I liked a lot of the performers. I think Simon or Ruth might be first out. Ruth’s ITV fans might get her through the first vote.
Quite liked Davood. I didn’t enjoy Aston’s dance but that’s personal taste and I like him as a person.
AJ’s comment about Mollie’s singing was a bit awkward.

Brendan and Anton are characters in the 'soap' aren't they? But there is no commentary on SCD is there? Joe public accepts they are professionals and leaves it at that. And yes with a big cast you do need Anton and Brendan.

Yes agree that Debbie was on fire, although hadn't realised she is a trained ballet dancer. Like Joe too ( and not just his dancing!)

The McFadden guy from Eastenders, no idea who that is and he was very bland in all the pre recorded bits. But actually, doing that jive, I thought he was very likeable and quite sexy, probably because he looked like a normal bloke doing a jive really well. Not sure if that will be enough going forward, we’ll see.
I think what’s clear from that opener is that Debbie McGee is totally up for it. And she has a young, exciting partner who will hopefully exploit that. I saw a clip on YouTube of her talking about her husband’s final days and it broke my heart. She clearly adored him. I love that she’s in the limelight now and I hope she goes far.
