The fact there are still tickets available suggests it isn't necessary a sell out but if you aren't familiar with KCL I would recommend 6:30-6:45 but hopefully it will be signposted!
They sometimes have wine at these things too (I used to work at KCL...)

SRB in conversation on Valentine's Night for free. Apparently allocating more tickets than seats so do get there early!

I haven't updated you on my theatre attending. Brian Pern last week, SRB chat on Sunday and I am going to see Uncle Vanya on Monday. What did you think of Brian Pern? I thought it was a great night - could have done without Mark King though - enough bum-chak-a-wah-wah bass for the next 10 lifetimes... Ha! I agree but I really enjoyed it even with Mark King doing an extended mix. I especially loved the excuse for why it got cancelled in October and Brian's cover of Something with all his exes on the screen behind him. Lucy Montgomery was great too. I am a huge fan of the song Spirit Level, so glad Brian's Best of is on Spotify.

Should be lots of comps/discounts for this though, unless Bradley Cooper comes back to TRH.

Speaking of which - am I right in thinking that a few of us are planning on mildly sexually harrassing SRB on Sunday night at his talk? If so, it would be nice to be able to identify each other (before the police arrive) - any ideas on a sign? Haha! I am planning on wearing a bright red dress but I imagine SRB attracts a lot of flamboyant women in bright red dresses.

Like with the unnecessary long The Master Builder I have invited other people so in it for the long haul out of politeness.
Oh well, least the cast are gorgeous.

That is far more analysis than I was expecting, Abby. Many thanks. My theory is that is a viable subject (coming after the legislation of homosexuality and abortion plus the whole swinging sixties) but just need some secondary and primary sources to prove it and even if I don't get the scholarship I will get some interesting books/plays to read

I know this a topic we have had many times but I am considering applying for a scholarship for an MA at Birkbeck and I am looking at the subject of the 1968 Theatre Act (and its affect on general culture/sexuality and gender roles). Was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books on the subject of the act and the build up to it, maybe going back to 1843, 1737 if you are really hardcore.
Many thanks in advance

That's horrific. I paid £30 for Row B of Lillian Bayliss, nice view but I would be reluctant to pay more.
The problem is Old Vic should be offering £10 seats for all performances and then they could at least justify inflated prices to subsidise those but to offer cheap seats across 5 performances and then inflate the run is outrageous.

It does feel like this will be his final ever role so I can see why that would intrigue/horrify but it doesn't have the oomph that I want from this. It sounds like he will just top and tail the show.

Has he been a trustee elsewhere? It does seem a bit odd to have all these randoms, skilled (debatable) in their field and then for the one BME to have to had all these experience in actual performance. Where are the black or Asian Alan Rusbridgers or Dorfmans who want to be part of such a board.

To boldly speculate as Jan Brock reminded me in another thread.
Anthony is a pretty thankless part for an actor like Fiennes (Is he/she too old should be in the FAQ) so he must either want to tick it off or he has a top dollar actress in mind. McCrory has said she wants to do it but who else has the gravitas?

Oh wonderful! I've been wanting to see a juicy Richard III and recently joined as an Almeida friend (plus will still be under 30 in June)
I am surprised he is doing so much varied theatre across different stages after being away. He must be losing film money doing this so has to be for love.

I am excited by this, I treated her last run as Beverley sings Whitney concert and ignored her slightly ropey accent BUT she has gained a lot of experience since 2013 so will look forward to seeing it again!

Crucially GG is the exception to the rule. Most unreserved venues such as Bush, Finborough etc don't sell out their productions. Orson's Shadow in the summer was half-empty.
To introduce allocated seating for a half empty play would be ridiculous and quickly undermined by the audience, who would buy cheap seats and move to premium.

Thanks, Xander! Had no idea they were doing that badly but I suspect the issues were transport based rather than output. I only live in Streatham and avoid doing "far away" things on a Sunday just because the trains will be awful.

I'm sure I read ages ago they were considering stopping Sunday matinees due to the reduced ACE grant so this isn't particularly related to Norris' first season being a bit of a flop. According to the BBC news story on this they will still be opening the building on Sundays during the summer. Good news about the summers. What about the restaurants in the NT? Will they be closed on Sundays too? I know Green Room (which I am meh about but that's another thread) and the pub are open but that seems an unnecessary loss of revenue.

Clearly I haven't read it properly so my opinion is worthless, but today's announcements sound like a concerted effort to get bums on seats. Will be interesting to see the annual report for RN's first year - I think the latest one only covered Hytner's last year. The level of papering and empty seats has been pretty high, which must surely be reflected in the accounts, but I'd also be curious to see whether donation levels have changed perceptibly. Absolutely! It feels like a band or singer touring again and promising to do mostly the greatest hits with the odd new song. Norris is not only reviving old NT classics like Amadeus and Angels in America but looking to theatres like Almeida, Old Vic and Young Vic that took risks with directors like Robert Icke, Yael Farber and Ivo Van Hove knowing their reputations will bring the bottoms, hopefully rich ones that drink at the bar and eat the restaurants. My only moan now I have calmed down is still the lack of phenomenal casting. The big names (maybe with the exception of Andrew Garfield and we could end up in a Kit Harrington argument about his status) are doing theatre quite regularly. NT used to be so good, especially compared to commercial theatre, at getting really man on the street friendly casting.

I am not surprised there have been whispers, it is clear from that Sunday closure announcement that takings are down and it is because of Rufus' quite poor production choices. He could not have another 2-3 years in the same vein as it has been so far.
On paper it looks great, looking forward to Amadeus (it would be very easy to cast a Paul Schofield type in that role but this is far more interesting choice of actor), Angels in America and the new Hare amongst others. I think the NT will have more energy and will be full. Directors like Icke and Van Hove are very exciting and attracting interesting directors seems to be Rufus' strength.
It might actually get some transfers out into the West End to make up for the War Horse loss.
I still think the Temporary Theatre programme is a bit meh but I need to see it a fringe space and not compare it to the main spaces.

The lack of transparency over whether Doran is planning to transfer or even tour The Tempest and other plays to London is why the Saturday demand is so high, especially those new to not only the RSC but Stratford Upon Avon who don't live in the Midlands will inevitably go for daytime shows.

Typical grim Ibsen. Sarah Snook has put her arms down, James Dreyfuss is back (no wonder he took a sickie, who woulda missed him) and Ralph is still an awkwardly sexy man but I enjoyed it.
In the light of the Doug Richard verdict yesterday I felt very uncomfortable with the kissing a 12/13 year old girl flashback BUT I think we are meant to realise The Master Builder is in a bad place and has been for a long time.
My companions were all confused about the milk. I didn't understand why it wasn't her duty to get a wet nurse!

Is this going to sell well in London? The story might attract but not sure how big Dominic Cooper in 2016.
TRH is so big but so expensive so hoping for comps/discounts.

For anyone who cares
"Reports from when the run opened just before Christmas had suggested he was struggling with his lines, though. "Yes, I certainly was," he says. "I haven't felt comfortable with it till last week really." Why does he think that is? "Well, mainly the lines. But also ... well, mainly the lines!" Which is odd for a pro like him, who has played plenty of big parts before. "I am a pro, I have done big parts before, but actually I have always found it hard to learn lines, and once they are in I get quite bored. I was fluffing up to press night and beyond. It's a bloody hard part."
Has he not had "hard parts" (quiet at the back) before!? Isn't Iago quite wordy?

Where was the West interview? I am intrigued how he isn't more mortified but maybe he is trying to hide his embarrassment? It must have been incredibly awkward for his co-stars. It was either in the Telegraph or the Sunday Times on Sunday last. Sorry, have forgotten which part of the paper but one of those review sections I expect. All chucked into the recycling now....and gone. I know I thought why do this now when the show is towards its end. I'll have a look on News Bank, thanks Lynette!

Surprised and concerned about the negative responses to this - it was one of my top 5 plays of 2012 (and I saw 100 plays that year so I had a lot to choose from!) and I'm sorry it hasn't been better received on the forum. Of course, everyone's opinion is valid and differing opinions is what keeps this place interesting :-) It might just be the standard, preview teething problems but I agree. I really enjoyed this at the Tricycle and it is shame to hear it isn't engaging people at the Garrick.

I thought that top stage right light in Stars was trying to blind me/distract me from Ball's weight gain (Me too, Michael, me too). I had to shut my eyes.
