Fully agree with you but I am at a loss now to think RSC will change.Track b@ck Erica s statements and you will see this theme. Theatre used to be a place with a real sense of danger…now it’s fully educational and accredited . Ah for a full on Titus……not here I think…..

RSC have stated that they place major emphasis on training and involving amateurs in the work. This explains the Community insertion on the brand image.I don’t really go with this for a major international company where audiences want the very best,…however going to have to get used to the lower expectations RSC from now on.

I was not going to comment on this but feel the need.
If the money went into regenerating the company through productions, reopening Swan,TOP etc I think I could justify the decision .However we know Erica Whyman will make her statements about ensuring education, community etc are served. The current RSC rejected its loyal audience, has shifted to education as its reason to exist and ignored innovative directors and actors. If….and it’s a big if…Greg returns with a new passion for the company he could turn it around. His love of Shakespeare is boundless and his knowledge of Early Modern,Jacobean ,Restoration etc very strong. He also is rooted in RSC history going back to Halls manifesto. He needs to be stronger as a leader and remind Erica she is not AD. Otherwise a very low level regional resource for education and community work.Fine but not what RSC charter explored.Henry V1 later this year follows the Dream etc community players model….yes,Jan…it is all at sea but my analogy would be more Titanic heading for iceberg . See little hope now.

many of us felt Trevor Nunn was wrong to cast white only for his Rose Henry V1. I feel this casting similarly does not move us towards integration. that really was the point.

The casting of the full company for Much Ado is,I feel, strongly divisive. Are we now to have all black, all white, all able bodied or non together. I can see the political reason for this but to open the season in such a statement of division seems totally misguided. Erica Whyman,of course, brings her agenda to the fore but we really now have shifted into statements that will fuel more division. Or perhaps,I just get the wrong message.

I think the recent RSC posts on this board help explain.
No real interest anymore by many previous audiences.

Fully agree
My points
RSC has consciously changed into eduction and community centric organisation..hence Royal Shakespeare Community. See programmes.
Production severe decline owing to directors who are not in top league
Why no front line Director on international level comes to RSC
Loyal audience huge decline …..instigated by RSC….don’t believe me…ask a few questions of staff
Whyman seized the lead as Doran only interested in his own projects
Board should advertise and not gift it to Whyman
Lockdown disaster unless a needy teacher who relies on education department to formulate teaching plans
New season Henries. Community partnerships…not great hope.
RSC May moan but they are to blame for the decline over past years
Too many lectures for audiences at shows….not make up your mind…..it’s feel the shame you lot.
Solution. Closure. Reopen with new team, new key players in both artistic and admin.
Sound bitter…perhaps but I was passionate about RSC and as audience member…jilted.
Rescue is needed before sinking into Avon…..but even that better option than this terrible decline mixed with arrogance.

or jamie lloyd or katie mitchell since the 90's or rebecca fraknell or sally cookson....
all would bring a new perspective.
i think it is time for national debate on this topic...with ace/media/rsc/shakespeare lovers/critics etc.
policy needs to be clarified......yes,i too, will not be visiting stratford under current leadership.
preach...preach....arrogance and nothing much else.

All this RSC talk is very sad....i,too,longed for RSC-they were the beacon of theatre for me.The brave work and radical direction.
Now,I think, they will agree Education is the core and the shows/seasons add on's to the development of Royal Shakes Community-it virtually states this in programme .
If RSC is to come back as theatre, the entire top level needs to go...Whyman,Doran etc.........it cannot change with them at helm and board ,i suspect, engineered to support.
If they wish to become a full education operation, they must state this and stop claiming to be 'where theatre begins'......the work is poor generally and i see no hope of change as even Henries will be community driven productions.
Bring Godwin back from US or drag Goold screaming out of Almeida or-impossible-invite Icke to propose a policy.Triumverate of Icke/Warner/Goold would cause eruptions on Avon but,my God,think of the work. Many,I speak to in the industry,do not want to work at RSC...feel there is no company and the policy is led by education dept.
I think they do have ambition and Whyman is clear on this-but it is away from high quality, exciting, radical production towards education, social justice and community.
They have no role in London-Globe does the work on a better scale and has built a loyal following.
No pleasure in this-RSC was magnificent. It is a pale shadow of what has been and,I fear, never will again.
If it was a Football Club-management would be let go immediately and fans given the chance to see the team rebuild.Alas,we have no such system and we watch 'end of days'.

i think its now clear that RSC are a community and participation/education company. I think over past few years they have danced around this but reading full press release it is very clear that the mission is clear. I think it is wrong as we have lost the full throttle of world dynamic theatre but we need to accept it. Erica Whyman has always made her ideas clear and to look at her Swan programming is to be left in no doubt at all.Shakespeare for the Nation-OK,perhaps but I dont really see much change coming-we have other preoccupations in our lives.Great for the amateurs and children participating but not really worth the trip to Stratford to see a hybrid Am/Pro production.
RSC want to be the force for change.....they have totally succeded here as ,from being a life long lover of the company and its work,I no longer want to see the work or support them through Friends or Membership schemes. They wont care -I am not their 'wanted demographic'.....Its a poor, predictable and engineered season that fails to excite or celebrate any return of RSC.
Of course-good luck in the new mission and no one doubts the importance of education...but many really great teachers have been doing this for years without the paternal hand of RSC Education. When you look back at the great work of the past,a mix of anger and sorrow at the awful waste of opportunities from RSC. They are a pretty good regional education offer but no longer the jewel in the crown.
I dont even think ACE can be blamed for what has happened.
For those on this theatreboard who still have time for RSC I apologize and hope you will get something from them in the year ahead to stimulate and excite.....Elephant is Love and we are all chilled. I am not.

I see fewer reasons any more for drama school training g….anyone can do this is the mantra from many theatres.
The levels in U.K. are much lower than ever before.
Where do we go to see the very best theatre now
I really want to know…
.?

If we accept the company as a community and social one all is fine
As a major international player…no hope
Perhaps a summer season will reopen Swan……

How I agree with you but with Erica Whyman our hands will be wringing and the community will replace front line actors. RSC has no real chance of greatness under current leadership. Blank sheet…..start again. Seriously,Icke. And Godwin won’t come near the place. Third rate everything.
