This makes sad reading but I fully agree….globe,NT,RSC now preaching and worthy but little excitement any more.National remains prison like with no bars or shop open….quite why,I don’t know. Theatre losing its pull for me and after a lifetime of passion it’s very saf

Wondered if there may be early reports on this one. Seems Globe is ahead of RSC and NT in striking a return-albeit gentle-to normality.

A few years ago I would have been excited...now it’s a folly as is outdoor theatre.
They do not deserve to continue in this form. New team needed and full restructure of model
Shakespeare and his contemporaries matter not a jot to my thinking.
Hate term woke but it is the appropriate one to describe the approach and disdain for past audiences who gave so much.

They are a disgrace to my mind.
I no longer value their work or leadership.
Only a new artistic team can hope to rebuild what was great.
The past year May have been ok for schools,I doubt it,but nothing more and now one show and a kindness shop in town
I share your anger.

Wokespeare
The debate following Dorans letter in Telegraph echoes my feeling that this company has destroyed the values of RSC.
It is now about Act For Change and demonstrating how social engineering works.
Not about audiences or the plays...it’s about the policies.
I never thought the RSC could destroy my love of going to Stratford.....they have and I bitterly regret this.
Doran and Whyman care nothing for the loyalty and passion of audiences....they must be replaced and very soon.
Watermill open As You Like It in their garden...feel much happier about this,I do feel they care about the experience.

I am very angry with RSC...daily theatres are bringing out summer plans and the invention and solutions on the whole very good.In Stratford the company will build a full scale open air theatre for one production....no attempt to open other three auditoria at all.If you don’t want Comedy of Errors....there is a rehearsal of Henry V1 part one which will not be staged.
I simply cannot believe how this once radical, transformative and groundbreaking company have become so irrelevant on the theatre landscape.
They seem to suggest audiences are going to be frightened to return.....they open a kindness shop in town .....crow about being in front line of education and claim Where Theatre Begins.
The board have a lot to answer for and the artistic leads must go....is it not time we deserved an RSC that places the inspiration back at forefront.
I really find this whole year plus one of dreadful letdown and their screen work from dreadful Dream to bland overacted Winters Tale places them out of frame. Look at Jermyn Street .......and everywhere else. Disgraceful leadership.

Where Theatre Begins. Claim the RSC today......rather where it ends given the response by others.
Largely a community festival
Not for me.

So right. However in Stratford they have opened a Kindness shop to meet nice folks.
All a joke and unlike ROH and ENO.......nothing major on horizon.
A glorious company diminished by ineptitude . A focus on wokery and nothing else.

That's really about it....Icke has his finger on the pulse for bringing classical work to young and-dare I suggest-older audiences.Even shows like Almeida Richard 11,which was not great, brought a very immediate and compelling perspective on the play. The RSC has finished as a force and, quite frankly,to quote Priti Patel I dont see who could take over. Its simply not very appealing or respected.Goold wouldn't now,Icke is off to Europe making huge strides....there will be a safe and exemplary political appointment but no one with a track record of reimagining classical and thrilling contemporary unless you can spot someone rare out there.

reading these comments-very sad but very true. RSC has ceased to be a force in our theatre with their menu of awful productions, poor directors and acting companies that are not really fit for purpose in a great classical company. Its not just Gregory-you cant let Erica Whyman off the hook who has taken Swan/TOP and programmed work that really hasn't encouraged audiences..much lecturing in fact and total alienation of RSC audiences. The view on Interactive/VR seems to suggest they are a cool lot but -let's be honest-most young people see at home much better VR and probably would like theatre to be a special and different experience not trying to badly clone their world. RSC need a complete rethink and redefining...text edits that neutralise the work, desperate attempts to woo the young and the company role repositioned as Education Company rather than leading theatre. It pains me to look at what they were and what they have become.

Strange ..no RSC listing at all in The Stage 100. Does this mean they have failed to respond to pandemic or is it an error. Thoughts ?

very glum reports from Stratford-small outdoor winter and perhaps a few on stage events but compared with some its very tiny.Have really bad feeling about RSC.

It will take a lot more than a few outdoor loose pieces. The whole place looks forlorn and even the Riverside Cafe a shambles......RSC once led the way-now not even following. They say nothing until 2021-with the prospect of another 6 months of nothing,I think they will have lost their loyalists and,no hope,of restoration. The work was uninspiring anyway-Doran/Whyman may have the right words for the agenda but little to show for this on stage.
Only hope-a season that brings in some alumni for special projects....even a Swan season of Shakespeare/Jacobean in a chamber setting, small casts,etc....Look at some other examples of innovation across Opera,Dance,Theatre.
RSC is in a perfect position now to change leadership across all levels, regroup and start afresh.
I really feel heartbroken walking past, tumbleweed, pools of water,Paul Matthgews lorry outside, decorations abandoned from March and a feeling of 'we've gone'
Tell me I am wrong-That's what I want to hear.

There was a piece in The Times on Friday that revealed RSC will become a hybrid company in future with less emphasis on live building shows. The plan seems to be to become a digital house for VR work and streaming. The feature was based on Sarah Ells speech last week.If this s sonthen it explains why they are simply doing nothing right now. Surprised that such a huge change in RSC future was not made public by board and Artistic Director. When I read the piece ‘exit stage left’ I felt bitterly disappointed for audiences who love live theatre so hope it’s not true.
