peggs I remember a bit in the series where Carson whipped out a ruler to check the table settings. My sister and I both laughed, but I really don’t think it was supposed to be funny. I remember seeing a documentary about Buckingham Palace getting ready for a state dinner, and they did the same. We all do that when laying the dinner table don't we?

Nigella Lawson, one of my favourite people, has quietly turned it down without making a song and dance about it. A class act. Lumley, who I'd always admired, has started displaying such aggressive patriotism recently it's turning me off. As a child of the empire, I'd expected her to be a little more thoughtful about it. Was it quietly made known why Nigella had turned down an honour?

I’m currently watching the ITV series “Anne”. This is the story of Anne Williams whose son was killed at Hillsborough. She spent her whole life seeking justice for him. It’s a brilliant series but utterly heartbreaking. Maxine Peake plays Anne brilliantly. I defy anyone not to shed any tears watching this even though you know what’s coming. One inspirational lady, the real iron lady

Now I’m off until the New Year, I went to see The Matrix: Resurrections this afternoon in the far less than packed surroundings of the Vue in Leicester Square. Goodness, why did they bother, I don’t want to read a load of baloney about how meta this is and how it’s real theme is the trans struggle: we’ve now had about eight hours of films since the first Matrix film and the storyline has not progressed one inch, there was no reason to make this beyond coining it in a little bit more. Imagine how good a world it is when you have only seen the first Matrix film

We had over 100,000 cases yesterday. That's absolutely mental. The Government cannot stay silent after that surely? They said in September that they were comfortable with 200k cases a day because of vaccinations reducing the link massively between cases and hospitalisations. Since we got 100k cases a day 4 months later than a lot of scientists had modelled, i doubt they are that concerned by a number like that ** Applauds the more cautious language being used today ** One proviso, to your last comment. It is an ever changing situation. The comments four months ago would have been in relation to Delta variant which seems to show a little difference to Omicron which changes modelling.

Let's not over-catastrophise here. I live in London and so do many of my friends. I only know of one friend's partner who has currently tested positive. The friend herself doesn't have it. Yes the numbers are huge, but so is London's population, and that bit of context is important to stop people having unnecessarily heightened panic. Of course further precautions should be taken, but the context does matter too. Yeah. I currently have it, but its been very mild so far ( sniffles). The 3 jabs ive had is undoubtedly helping me through it. Get jabbed asap, and lets crack on. Don't crack on until you are negative though....

He's buying himself a week becasue there is a chance the hospital and death data won't deteriorate very much, even though infection rates have increased. There is also the issue central to Tory thinking of the tail wagging the dog - the unvaxed small minority (but 90% of deaths) determining Gov policy.
Fwiw, 920K vaccinated yesterday.
That wasn't the tail I was thinking of when you started talking about Tory policy

There's certainly evidence that it's much more infectious. Whether or not it's milder is still inconclusive. "Covid-19 cases in the UK soared past 93,000 to reach a record high for the third consecutive day on Friday, as (Imperial College) researchers warned there was “no evidence” that Omicron was milder than the Delta variant." www.ft.com/content/020534b3-5a54-4517-9fd1-167a5db50786I was just going to post that report

There was a comment in that thread that healthy young people are more at risk from lightning strikes than the virus. That's as may be, but they forget the risk of infecting other people. Indeed. The reason this pandemic hasn't ended isn't the people who die; as far as the virus is concerned they are literally a dead end. It's the people who live and spread it who keep the pandemic going. The only way this will end is when either we get the reproduction rate of the disease down below 1 and keep it there, or we get a dominant strain that's innocuous enough that we no longer need to fight it. The only one of those that is in our hands is the first. Is that true you are more at risk of lightning?

Barbers: it’s time for him to step up to the plate and have awkward conversations with whoever is cutting his hair about manly things like football and where he’s going on holiday 😂 Is nearly correct. Depends how adorable his current hairdresser is. Hormones and just becoming a teenager and all that

It's a pretty big deal when those people were the ones telling us we couldn't do exactly what they were doing. It may 'only' be a Christmas party, but what it represents is that there's one rule for us and one rule for them - and in a global health crisis where public trust is vital for health messaging, that is absolutely unforgivable. There have been different rules for everyone during lockdowns. We have to be realistic about this. I heard someone describe lockdown as 'middle class people hiding in their homes while working class people bring stuff to them'. We knew Westminster and Whitehall were working 'in person' because they are (supposedly) running the country at a very difficult and stressful and confusing time and I don't resent or care about them having a Christmas buffet, nor am I remotely surprised or aghast that they did. I also think it was nuts for Scotland to sack a health minister for checking on her house during lockdown. Do the disciplinary nitpicking afterwards, not while we're in the middle of a battle. Messaging-wise, it was hidden, we didn't have to know about it. I think you are wrong. The conduct and behaviour of those who make the rules matters.

Something that is really starting to do my head in: people taking photos or even filming mid-show using their phones. makes me feel like some of British society is revelling in a self-elected downgrade in manners. Not just the British. I was in Paris at the ballet tonight and saw the same. The gentleman next to me had to lean forward and ask the woman in front of me to tell her husband to stop filming... with the flash! Sacre bleu

Unfortunately the only centre that comes up in Cambridge is marked "No boosters". Which seems ridiculous to me when we are being repeatedly told to get boosters, but there it is. Oh that's a shame, if you have some time Monday and your local centre is easy to get to, might be worth popping down to see if you can get booster. Can only say no and you still have your original date

It's based on a true story, we know what happens It's based on a news story from several years ago that I remember the bare bones of, the discovery of the parents' bodies in a suburban back garden, but I don't know the details of how the case unfolded afterwards, the twists and turns, the motives and backstory, and I'm not going to look them up until I've finished watching the series. Yeah I'm the same with the story, I was just being a silly sausage

Have you searched for walk in sites in your area? On the NHS website, I was due for vaccine same date as you but went to a walk in this Wednesday when three months between jabs became active I've just tried having a look & it says it says booster jabs are appointment only in Cambridgeshire. However the information online seems to be based on how the situation was a few weeks ago rather than how it is now. So I'm contemplating driving to the vaccine site on Monday where I'm booked on 24th & asking if there's any chance I can have an earlier jab. www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-walk-in-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-site

I was wondering if anyone on here was watching this? I'm two episodes in, so please, no spoilers, but it's a true crime story that's filmed and performed in away that feels like theatre, even having (in the closing titles of episode 2) footage of the scenery being shifted around. Anyway, it's an unusual approach for TV so thought I'd flag it up on here. It's scripted by Colman's husband Ed Sinclair and directed by Will Sharpe (writer/director of Ch4's Flowers, Giri/Haji and the upcoming Louis Wain film). It's based on a true story, we know what happens

I'm finding it very stressful that there are so many articles in the media saying GET YOUR BOOSTER NOW but its impossible to do so. I have an appointment for 24th which I booked over 2 weeks ago, as soon as I was allowed to. I keep checking the NHS website but there are no earlier appointments available. I'm booked to see The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House on 21st & really want to go but I'm terrified I'll catch covid doing so, as it'll be 6 months minus 2 days from when I had my 2nd jab. Have you searched for walk in sites in your area? On the NHS website, I was due for vaccine same date as you but went to a walk in this Wednesday when three months between jabs became active

Maybe that is what the unvaccinated want. At work if the unvaccinated gets pinged then they have to isolate, they get a nice week off, whilst the responsible employees have to go into work. I have no such issues if my organisation doesn’t pay the staff asked to isolate who are unvaccinated, the only issue here is staff would never disclose if they have been pinged. I definitely would be more than happy, if the unvaccinated are taken into hospital for Covid related treatment, then the hospital has an obligation to recover their costs of that treatment. The unvaccinated are putting an extra and a unnecessary burden on the NHS, on staff that are overworked and this causes great stress, this is forecast to get worse with this new variant and unvaccinated could deny vaccinated people getting treated/or poorer quality of treatment. Instead of standing on your doorstep clapping the NHS, roll up your left sleeve, this is the greatest act of altruism you can do for the NHS. I get the argument if the NHS start charging it is a start of a slippery slope, this is the only case where I would be used. As it happens I am isolating now because I have just came back from Iceland and waiting for my results of my PCR test. The Government changed the requirements whilst I was away, I have been told by my manager to take it annual leave, I will be challenging that, when back at work. ABSOLUTE nonsense. Do you rely on Dr Hilary Jones for your facts? Most people in hospital are vaccinated. Around 70% - that is a fact and is available from latest Public Health England data. Is that true?
