He just took a huge 8% off the Universal Credit taper, and the min wage will be £9.50 in April. Everyone who wants it is double jabbed, and anyone over 40 can get a booster. The country is effectively at full employment and wages are rising disproportionately for low paid. People might need to get used to the idea gov this Gov is not overly bothered by what the internet says. In a sense it feels as if Johnson is calling out - what he sees as - the limits of shrieking keyboard jockeys. The Labour Party is another matter, diametrically opposite even.
Quite an interesting time.
Is that your second visit to confession this week?

This story is not going away. PMQ's today will be required viewing. How they will weasel out of this I do not know. After the video kf them joking about it. I am apoplectic with rage. If Kier Starmer cannot wipe the floor with Johnson over this, he is unfit to be in the opposition. Can you imagine the shame of having elected them?

To be clear, I’m not advocating not reporting these things. These people need to be held to account. My point is that by reporting these things people are provoked not to do the right thing. It’s a Catch 22. You can’t have both honest and open and explicit reporting of bad behaviour AND the public complying. That doesn’t mean it should go unreported but it’s genuinely not helpful to the overall cause. I have no answers. But people read these headlines and then think sod the rules. Reporting it is right but it doesn’t help the covid situation! Well.... depends how you take this. IMO it means maybe we shouldn't follow more stringent rules that our leaders advocate. (who the country voted for and will still vote for). Imagine having voted for them nevermind considering voting Tory again?

The papers making this widespread knowledge is causing further damage. We need public compliance. BJ is to blame but reporting it in this way makes the situation worse. I know this is what the press is for and it’s their job but this shouting from the rooftops ‘one rule for them, another for us’ is not helpful to anybody. Strange comment

FFS. It's difficult enough to have a sensible conversation. Do we need a thread for tabloid tweets? Now that the Prime Minister has admitted to having parties he says weren't illegal, can we include it in the sensible chat?

Okay, another chance tonight for you appalling Philistines. 9pm BBC 4 - the return of Britan’s Lost Masterpieces. It's like Who Do You Think You Are but for paintings. Sometimes a bit of a stretch but all good, clean fun. Don't be late. Which you would be if you turned on at 9 It's on at 8. Watching on plus 1

I got to London fine yesterday but the journey home was awful. Almost 4 hours for what should have taken 50 minutes, including an hour and a half standing in the cold at Stevenage & another half an hour or more standing in the cold at Royston. I was masked so my glasses were too fogged up for me to see properly most of the time. I ended up crammed in a taxi alongside 3 unmasked fellow passengers, by which point I was so cold I would have taken a taxi with the Devil himself, masked or unmasked. Aching all over today from all the standing & if I haven't caught covid it'll be a miracle! Oh, Dawnstar. That sounds horrific. Even more so since you have told us your personal circumstances. Hoping everything works out ok in the end

I'm still trying to trade in vouchers so Pi on Wednesday, and then Giselle on Thursday - animatronic puppetry (I'm guessing) meets sublime grace. Also, Wagner's Valkyrie tomorrow at the ENO - my first look at his ring, Matron.

I was told Tilly 10am Saturday morning. My friend still claiming to be in the know Like I said last week, that is impossible. The Saturday show is live. Your friend is winding you up. That said, anyone with some dance knowledge can quite often predict who will go. Tilly having a Samba was never going to end well. Yeah why I confirmed show was live last week. Don't watch it personally, I did think it was hell of a call though even at this last stage for someone who scored so highly last week. Notice there you also spoke about the dance they were doing, never considered that. On a side note, when will Dan do a 'hard' dance?

Use your own eyes and brain, read the news. If you don't understand how dangerous Covid still is that is no-one's fault but your own. The attitude you are displaying in this thread is astonishingly selfish. I dont remember voting for a system where everyone is wearing masks indoors. “What’s so hard about wearing a mask?” is not a reason to wear a mask. It’s an excuse to defend mask wearing in particular and compelled behaviour in general. Me, my friends and family are all done with this crap. Zero compliance this end with any restrictions A very strange take on life, I don't recognise any part of this within me. It makes me sad

I'm an American in Paris at the moment and you have to show proof of vaccination to enter museums and most restaurants. Masks are required in shops and on transit with fairly good compliance. And normal life is able to go on because of these precautions. Restaurants are full, shops are busy, people are out and about. Additional precautions will be in place shortly, including offering booster shots to everyone (and requiring them for certain groups in order to keep their vaccine pass), making masks mandatory in all indoor spaces (and some outdoor events) and reducing the validity period of using a negative test result instead of a vaccine pass. Sadly, when I travel to London in December, I'll probably stop going out to eat, won't be buying new theater tickets and I'll probably restrict my activities that involve crowded indoor venues if they don't require vaccination proof and/or testing, in addition to masking. You can do what you think is best for yourself of course but I can assure you that it is a ‘normal ‘ here as I have ever seen it. Yes, covid pass for some venues, not all by any means, temp checks maybe in place of and the restaurants are heaving. I don't do clubs but I expect they are all heaving too. People are shopping as can be seen by the number of designer bags being hauled onto the tube this evening. Mask wearing varies; seems about 70% wear on tube in my experience. Inside theatres, 30% unless asked by management to wear. Shops 50% I would say. Hairdressers vary but seem to be keeping to the masks wearing and distancing rules. Etc etc. I do not know the numbers . Perhaps Paris is ‘safer’ than London. I am triple jabbed, wear a mask in indoor situations and keep my distance: I don’t go to social occasions with more than a few people so you can say I am pretty cautious. I have been to the theatre a few times, different measures each time. Inconsistency rules. But London is busy. As I said I do not know the numbers. Maybe check yourself but if you take some precautions I think you will be ‘safe’. Yep, Paris > London

Deciding this new Covid is bullsh*t for mental health reasons. Putting it in the pay no mind space. Back to partying Without judging you I do fear people might end up dying because too many people have that type of attitude to this variant. It’s just too early to say how dangerous or not it will be. This

It’s likely there will be a Circuit breaker in the new year in the uk. I think Plan B is more likely than a lockdown. It would be wise for countries to donate some of their supply of the antivirals to Africa to help them deal with this variant. What's plan B? Donate more vaccines to the area and continue vaccination/booster programme in the UK? Would anyone go any further than current policy?

Never liked intervals in any length of show tbh. Completely breaks immersion and takes me out of the moment. Mood and atmosphere is lost as the lights come up, phones come out, and you have to sit there listening to the inane chatter around you. Then you have to get up, let people back in, get back into the story etc. I often just find them boring and unnecessary - maybe it's just me, but it's not that hard to plan ahead so you don't have to get up, even for a 3+ hour film. I'm loving this new trend of abandoning them! I thought that until I saw Spacey's Richard III at the Old Vic

Team Giuseppe here. A good Bake Off winner. Standard was a little poor in the final after the quarters and semi finals. Put it down to nerves, but a very enjoyable series

I saw someone else's comment on this elsewhere and the gist of what they said was: Don't be taken in. He's an expert at distraction strategies: if there's something going on he doesn't want people to notice or he wants people to forget then he'll create a trivial story to draw attention from the important story. This Imagine having ever voted for him?

With Debenhams, Top Shop, etc gone and House of Fraser going I think it might be. And it’s very sad. My solution would be that online shopping be taxed to make it more 5% or more expensive to shop at home vs in a shop. When was it alive? Soz, can't answer the question
