Yes this is what I do and every one else in the theatre does. You clap after every song, that's what has happened at every show I've seen! It's fair enough Laura having a go, I would be aannoyed too. It's not exactly hard to clap. Why would you be annoyed? You are working in the job of your dreams, something you love to do more than anything and brings great joy, while 99% of the people in the audience are chearing- why on earth would you get annoyed at the 1 or 2 people choosing not to cheer? Also no, not everyone cheers after every number- if Im utterly unimpressed with a performance (that looks phoned in for example) I wont clap... that shouldnt take anything away from the enjoyment of the actor, because I'd like to imagine they're doing it for the love of the art/being on stage, not the clapping... And if they are in it for the applause they really don't deserve to be up there. A million would trade with them in a heartbeat and be genuinely happy.

Not much mention of Natalie Andreou in all this. Anyone else sad to see her go? Saw her a couple of times and thought she was solid - but nothing spectacular. I think she didn't quite have enough shows to develop her portrayal/earn a huge fanbase. I think (and correct me if im wrong please) that she had the potential to go on ALOT, but called out often.. That said I heard when she did go on she was very solid, great voice. I'm also saddened by Laura Emmitt's departure, but I think with her relatively short run in Wicked+ crazy talent (when she did go on)- she's headed for bigger and better things... I do hope to see her as Elphaba again someday though!

I think this is the last I'll say on this subject because she really makes my blood boil, but on another forum someone posted that this is such typical behaviour from oeople who have never struggled to get to where they are. Benanti landed a lead on Bway at 18 and dropped out of college. Carrie was a child actress and never really struggled to find work in entertainment. They never waited tables or stressed about paying rent or starved to make month's end. They never worked a job in which lives matter abd they responsible for them... So it must be easy to think they are just antitled to get praise for anything- because it was always there so why should bot be perfect 100% of the time? Why shouldnt everyone love and praise them unconditionally (in the name of kindness none the less)?
I don't claim to know their lives or struggles, but it's something someone pointed out and I have to agree.
I was a huge fan of Laura, I love her sense of humor, but this whole thing just turned me off.. and I was never a fan of Carrie and this just strengthened that.

Can anyone tell me, is there some form of database of web page online of casting for previous performances of when a understudy was on? I once came across a list of dates and the cast on for that performance. It wasn't the Wicked Wiki productions info but trying to chase back any understudies I may have had...? Hope you can help! Many thanks. I know the innuendooutnuendo forum has very active "at this performance" threads for each production where they post when an understudy goes on, just look by the date of each post- that might help I think

There is a difference between thanking the bus driver as you get of the bus, and getting applauded after EVERY solo you sing on stage... Like I said, I doubt people jump up from their seats every time the bus comes to a halt and shout "thank you driver" or clap at him...
I have no doubt she thanks drivers- its just not the same as appluase
ETA: djames- did she respond to you tweet? If its the one I think it is you were absolutely right...
Also apperently Benanti was asked by the roundabout theatre company to take the tweet down and refused

I wouldn't come in contact with miss Fletcher because I just said this- (in response to her saying she thanks her bus driver) -do you thank him every time the bus stops? or just when its your stop to get off? that's what curtain is for and -It's such a me me me I deserve praise attitude- no one clapped for me at the military, we worked just as hard I think
to which she blocked me... ha! then she tweets this:
so one audience member not clapping= the death of courtesy, respect and kindness...

Wow. I want to go to see Carrie in a show in the front row and turn my back on her when she comes on for her bow; then she'll learn a bit more about courtesy. Almost tempted to end my Twitter break to say something to her. What an entitled little madam. Maybe some people are applauding through relief that it's over. Haha. (P.S. What did Frances say?) Frances said she didn't like the Les Mis performance at the Oliviers last year (or two years ago) and her comment was something along the lines of " no life behind the eyes, didn't believe it" to which Carrie responded it was sad to see someone she looked up to say that (never forgetting to mention she played little Eponine) and thank god they won the award moments later to help forget such remarks (paraphrasing slightly)

Not what I wanted to be known for (lol thank god it's all somewhat anonymous), but I just disagree with their sentiment... someone needed to say it I think..

Ha no, they are just teens stressing how much I dont know about theatre or how much work goes into it, and if I don't clap I should never attend a show again... alright..

I posted my opinion on Carrie but deleted it , because I don't enjoy posting such negative comments on performers, at least not publicly. I do fully agree with hitmewithurbethshot and saved my initial comment on my computer, if anyone is intrested I dont mind privately messaging it.

I have a friend who works with Laura Benanti on She Loves Me, apparently it was just a joke. Perhaps the joke was she was making fun of people who expect applause? I honestly don't get this 'joke'. Benanti's twitter is filled with this type of humor, that was smartly described somewhere else as insecure humor- that her insecurities show through most times she jokes.. and being insecure is fine- most actors are. Maybe she needs the approval She also tweeted this after I dont if I believe it's 100% a joke or her insecurities or both, it still comes of as entitled... :/

HA! Guess who just retweeted it- miss Carrie Hope Fletcher.. see I might believe this was just an unsuccessful joke on Benanti's part, I do NOT like Carrie, one bit, and have no doubt she retweeted it in the serious sense... Just ughh... cant stand the girl

See this is why I love UK theatre- clapping and standig ovations aren't a must, they are earned... There is such a heated discussion on BWW how clapping is theatre etiquette and not clapping is rude... I find myself now and again unimpressed with a solo (granted musical theatre here isnt all that) and just don't clap... Rarely have I felt someone earned a standing ovation- and I think thats fine.

Benanti (currently leading the revival of She Loves Me on B'way) posted this tweet last night:
The video is also on her instagram.
What do you think? I personally think it seems entitled of her, while I am a fan of hers, her adressig this topic, especially the way that she did just makes me uneasy.
There is quite a discussion on over on American forum, BWW, and I feel while in America the applause are at a point where they borderline excessive, in the UK the audience is much more subdued (not at all in a bad way)- and so I thought it might make for an interesting discussion here.

The article also says:
Completing the new cast are James Darch, Kerry Enright, Freya Field, Joseph Fletcher, Fraser Fraser, David Gale, Sergio Giacomelli, Alexandra Grierson, Olivia Kate Holding, Aaron Jenkins, Claudia Kariuki, Will Lucas, Chanel Mian, Billy Mitchell, Scott Monello, Ella Nonini, Rosa O’Reilly, Julienne Schembri, Joe Sleight, Jessamy Stoddart, Paulo Teixeira, Joe Toland, Hannah Toy, Russell Walker, Sasha Wareham and Helen Woolf.
Im not very knowledgeble about the london cast, so forgive the possible cluelessness, but are they all new? I don't see Laura Emmitt's name or Natalie M's- are they leaving?

Who is Alice Fearns? Was she ever in Wicked? Can't recall hearing of her- but very happy for her none the less... ( still hoping for a bump for Laura at some point though...) Alice Fearn without an 's'. I first saw her understudying Princess Fiona in Shrek at the Drury Lane and she was better than her three leads combined. She will be amazing. Oh woops sorry- thanks! So nice to see a fresh face get a shot at Elphie... And with rachel (and KRJ) only there ubtil Jan, I have a feeling we might see another fresh face soon!

Does the crew change during a tour? I know there was a cast change- but I'm not sure how this works, do the stage hands change with each venue? Is it not considered strange for a show that has already been running for a while to have so many tech difficulties mid-run?

The current Pricsilla tour that has been going around the uk is international- coming to Israel (!!!!) in the summer- the first uk tour to do so as far as I know... I hope more follow Cool. The UK tour of Dirty Dancing is coming to Belgium this summer. Excited about that. But one tour per year is not enough. I'd like to have at least 3 I know what you mean- this is the first international tour we'll be getting, and there are about 2 national tours every year- talk about a shortage! Lol

I'm glad she's getting time off, yes they sold the run on her name, but she is human and I really sympathize with her... I really hope that during this time off she has good company that'll look out for her/ be there for her... I do think she will be back, and I think she'll be better for this break, but really only time will tell..

It's odd really. On the one hand it's ok for us to discuss and speculate on Smith, but not OK for the papers but equally we have people on here berating us for discussing Smiths situation. As I have said I feel sorry for anyone who is ill but I think Smith does somehow court publicity and her coterie of fans get quite prickly if anyone dare make a negative comment or even any comment that isn't gushing about her. I find Carrie Hope-Fletcher is in the same mouldCarrie has also been known to search twitter/ YT comments for anything negative on her/ her performances and replying (usually belittling the commenter) thus directing her legions of fans at the initial commenter... (and is now retweeting all of her reviews for Chitty which I find a little obnoxious but whatever)...
But sorry- Off Topic
