I think, that in a world that entered the age of social media, the social media beast that is Hamilton (and it's social media savvy leader in LMM), the fact that it succeeded in that sense (of streaming) makes sense... Still an achievement- but the publicity is largely due to their very smart use of the internet/ social media (nothing wrong with that)

That's probably because there are no proper songs in the show, just some affected posturing and talking in a dramatic way, preferably every sentence a bit higher than the one before and in an overly dramatic voice that sounds like the speaker is about to cry. And of course the cool look and pose at the end of a "song" is important, preferably with a head flip on the final chord. That would not work well on radio. Of course it wouldn't work without watching the show. Obviously all these people who made Hamilton OBC double platinum have bought it by mistake! Is it double platinum? it just earned platinum in May...

I know Phantom is not the best (understatement of the year) but it's the movie that got the ball rolling for me nearly 10 years ago... it's the first show I knew by heart thanks to the film... so it (along with Gerard and Emmy) have a special place in my heart

I'm sure they're not to happy at the thought that their deserved awards (Savion's choreo for ex) might go to Ham just because of the hype... And I think while Hamilton as a show IS exciting, this award show is not... for the first time I'm watchibg it for the plays (and Im so not a play person) because every musical award is known in advance, and a sweep is boring..
Also regarding the other shows- Shuffle had HUGE potential and everyone thought it would come to knock Hamilton of the radar- but that book is a mess. Waitress had nice potential plot wise, but the score is dull.. But the SNUBBED American Psycho was fresh and innovative, and I think it was exciting... The revivals were excellent this year.

Like I said- I understand that Ham is a big draw this year (agreed with what Patty and Emily said). I still feel really bad for all the people who, you know, created OTHER shows this season.. (the few who weren't scared away because of Hamilton)

Here's a new promo for the Hamilton, Hamilton and nothing but Hamilton... I mean... umm... what are they called again? I know Hamilton is a big drawing point this year for ratings (and I know you love the show, so I apologize in advance) but this is so uncool and kind of gross in my eyes. I like Hamilton as much as the next guy- but they could have mentioned the other shows, even in passing. Or a quick clip montage to go along with Hamilton.. I feel so bad for the other creators this year. Especially the Shuffle along team/ Sara/Steve Martin... I don't recall an Oscars promo going "this is Leo Decaprio's year yo- will he finally get the oscar tune in to check his reaction and maybe he'll go on stage".. you know what I mean- this isn't the Hamilton show...

Thank you for the recap Kevin, I gasped too haha. Sounds like a fun night in the theatre- for the fans at least. Do you think it warrants being played in two parts?

It was released during the intermission of the show, and I'm guessing it was written before that... I skimmed through it and couldn't find anything that wasn't previously online. Is everyone just respecting Rowling's wishes and not releasing anything? Maybe people are waiting until they see part 2 before they say anything Maybe... kind of incredible in this day and age- having restraint..

Well the first preview has produced the first sort of review in the Mirror - but doesn't give much away It was released during the intermission of the show, and I'm guessing it was written before that... The set looks great in pictures, they clearly had a decent budget for it. Baz tweeted that there are live owls, what it is with Sonia Friedman and animals. Legally Blonde and Shakespeare in Love had dogs and this has owls. The only spoiler I've seen on Twitter is that one of the owls escaped during the show (and I guess it was visible to the audience cause there are several tweets about it)

Yep- real life gets in the way Couldn't find anything this time around. I would suggest logging in and seeing if anything is in your cart- I was surprised to find 6 tickets there after thinking I got none last time

Having decided couldn't justify this have now my web searching as it's got nearer, if the site says there are some tickets but can't actually ever get anything in my basket i'm guessing it's just under a lot of heavy traffic? I just tried a few hours ago when I saw the alert here (for fun, I'm not anywhere near London), and if you get to select the type of seat (price A/b/etc) and get an error message after selecting them- it probably is in your cart. and it's worth checking for a while- because people drop tickets from their cart (with intention or not) every few minutes. But this was a few hours ago, so it maybe done by now... I'll check also and let you know if I find anything

Am I the only one who is feeling a little bad for the guys of the A Very harry Potter Musical trilogy right now? I know there were previously lawsuit issues with it. JK let it go after they edited the version that is now on YouTube (so that it doesn't include copyrighted words)

Seems they've added new rows. No idea where row TT is but it now exists, at the back I suppose. I've seen this too but can't find where they are located (If you book tier C pricing row TT is what you get- res. view for overhang, 40 pounds per performance) does anyone know when they are going to release the next batch of tickets? as in May 2017 onwards?

Those are musicals though, don't plays usually charge less? Oh absolutely but let's face it this has the broad appeal of a musical and a production level to match. For just one part the top price is £65 which is what you'd expect from a play but two parts together takes it up to top musical pricing. It's not like each part is only 1 hour each and could easily be one play. The running time in total is around 5 hours! Yes I guess (re: the production values). Also see my edit- I corrected myself later

Oh come on...you are citing the only production on the West End stage that can get away with charging 100% above face value. The standard top price is £65/70. If you take your kids to one part, they'll want to see both...I am a Parent, take it from me this is blatant greed. Wicked - £125 Les Mis - £127 Matilda - £122 Lion King- £127 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - £125 Funny Girl - £125 Those are musicals though, don't plays usually charge less? Edit: I take it back. Did some googling and this came up: According to the survey, the average price for the best seat at a commercial West End play has increased from £78.24 in 2013 to £80.45 And this is from 2014, I imagine it rise since too... So 130 for 2 shows is somewhat low in comparison... I wonder if they'll raise their prices at some point

Unrelated at all, but there is a rumor (from a less than legitimate source, but still funny, even if untrue- just the notion) that when Rowling was in NY recently she went to see Hamilton and walked out at intermission.. ha

hmmm...I might sound like a self-loathing musical theatre fan, but I do get what she's trying to say, despite how clunky and pedestrian she comes across. Musicals are not considered high performance art. They are not ballet, opera or classical music, and they are not Shakespeare or drama like Ibsen, Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, etc. The reality is that musicals are actually pretty simplistic, popular and earnest. Nothing wrong with that, clearly I am on a musicals board and musicals are the thing I am most passionate about in life. To call musicals not "theatre" is factually wrong. I think what she means to say is that musicals is not the highest form of theatre, which, I think she is entitled to. There are some musicals I wouldn't classify as 'simplistic' at all (Sondheim's work pops to mind first- Passion for example) but there are others too.. But I get what you're saying. She could have worded it "straight theatre" or "plays" and this debate wouldn't be...

Previews haven't started yet right? (Sorry I'm not really following this show).. I look forward to reviews.. to see if there is there really so much (interesting/ relevant) content that she couldn't cut it down to a 3 hour play...? Again, she hasnt written it - JACK THORNE has written the play from a story by Rowling. Jesus, I wrote my post before seeing yours, and I don't follow this show.. Please let me repent for my sins! (And calm down mate)

Of course I should point out that she hasnt actually written the play(s)unless she has changed her name to Jack Thorne. ...and she doesnt like musicals, big deal - I suspect millions of people in the UK dont like musicals but it doesnt bother me. It's perfectly fine to dislike musicals, and to be vocal about it too... but to make a point that musicals are not theatre (and musical theatre performers are what..? They don't perform live to an audience? Or maybe a song isn't magical as opposed to a scene reading straight...) I don't know- I can see why people in musical THEATRE are taking offence..

The play is in two parts and you have to go on two consecutive* nights (and pay twice as much!) *possibly not consecutive now, but the initial tickets were sold that way Yeah you can do it all in one day and it's been like that from the start. You do get your money's worth as both parts are over 2 and a half hours each Previews haven't started yet right? (Sorry I'm not really following this show).. I look forward to reviews.. to see if there is there really so much (interesting/ relevant) content that she couldn't cut it down to a 3 hour play...?

How do you mean spans 2 nights? The play is in two parts and you have to go on two consecutive nights (and pay twice as much!) For real? Is that like a gimmick, or something other legit play (/musicals that are also theatre I think..!!) do? That also seems super sketchy-like a money milking scheme. Are both parts loger than 2 hours each? Why not Long Day's Journey Into Night it and get it over with... Also this-

This is so off to me, and it is phrased in a way that seems like she meant what was said... I mean.. I can't seem to think how this phrase coukd be taken out of context.. Just writing a play that is oh so important it has to span two nights has put me off her. I know there are other plays like this out there, but by people with no theatrical expierence? To me it just seems lazy overindulgence. How do you mean spans 2 nights?

My dream would be to see an "upset"- Dreamgirls/ Nine style, where the "best musical" one goes to a show other than Hamilton. Not because I don't think Hamilton isn't deserving (I love it dearly, and as a whole show it is actually deserving in the big category- it's the others where I think there competition) but because it would be SO shocking and hilarious to see the outcome of it in the community... (that and I'm not particularly looking forward to "rapped" speech after speech all evening)
