I saw this last night and just didnt really get the point of it? its is a parody? is it meant to make me think about the current political climate? its it just meant to be a nostalgic evening of sillyness? The show, and I have no idea what it's trying to say, and after Mr Burns i was so excited to see this... I guess i should have know what to expect from Richard Jones though....

Well i can't tell you what time the show came down - but act 1 felt like a lifetime.
I'll excuse the dodgy sound, and a few off key notes due to the early preview, but no amount of previews will fix this score, or the rest of the show. From what i saw, at least in act 1 the show unsure whether its a straight musical or a parody, and trys to get by on 'low budget charm' for all the tricks/effects, but instead it just comes across cheap, tacky & embarrassing.
Oh there's also the worst effing puppetry i have ever seen.
In case you cant tell - I really hated this!

I saw this on Monday & needed a few days to get my thoughts together. It's a noble failure with lots of nice things going for it (mostly Audrey Brisson's Jiminy) and a sensationally attractive chorus twink - but as a whole thing it just doesn't work. The concept of Pinocchio as the only human and everyone else as puppets sounds nice and clever - but in reality it just doesn't work & so is dropped halfway through. If it wasn't using the Disney songs i think we'd all be being even harsher - the nostalgia they invoke along with a few cute magic tricks are the only thing that kept this from being a total write off.

This trailer suggests the 5 classics from the movie plus other ‘music and folk songs’
So by the Disney back catalogue we were promised, but also not just 4 songs.

Having seen what can be achieved with horses as puppets, the whale sequence really does have the potential to be quite spectacular. It would also be quite an interesting spin to have the world of Pinocchio full of puppets, where the only person who thinks he's a puppet and yearns to be a real boy, is actually a real boy the whole time. I think you'd need a few human characters like Gepetto, Coachman, Lampwick and maybe the Blue Fairy everything else could be puppets or costumes While Monstro could be amazing, I'd be interested to see how they do the donkey transfomation, that could visually amazing if utterly terrifying if done well Baz mentioned that they're not only using songs from the film but also other songs from the Disney back catalogue as well so I'm interested what songs they're also choosing for the production I remember Baz tweeting this too - but now there are only 4 songs? I wonder what happened...

I heard they want a War Horse route for this - West End, Broadway, tours and world domination?!!! I wouldn't blame Rufus at all for this. He'd be mad not to maximise its potential and he could do with another certifiable commercial hit after the flak he's had this year over the 3 Olivier productions. I guess all of this will depend on the deal with Disney - surely it wont be as big a cash cow for the NT as War Horse, because i'd expect Disney will pocket a majority of any transfer cash? Tho even if they just get a few measly %, if its successful enough that could keep the Olivier in Mediocre productions for another few years....

My favourite places to eat in Stratford are The Four Teas which is a lovely forties wartime themed tearoom with fantastic tea and cakes and really good breakfasts. And Loxley's on Sheep Street - I adore their fish board sharing starter. I adore the Fourteas too! Its run my a former RSC Stage Manager (and my mates mum) and is always full of cast members

I totally forgot at 8.30, so booked for Macbeth, John & Absolute Hell just after 1.
Were there any decent pit seats for John at £15? I settled for side balcony as that's all i could get at that time... managed to get good seats for Macbeth still, though i am waiting til the last week of the run now...

The Hackney Panto works brilliantly without Clive, he's great sure... but the whole ethos and joy of their productions worked just as well last year without him.
I also love the Stratford East pantos every year - they're always so brilliantly inclusive & representative of their audiences.

a coproduction with Theatr Clwyd with Katherine Parkinson, billed simply as 'a comedy' That'll be The Death of Katie Hopkins - though I daresay they might change the title! It's scheduled for Theatr Clwyd in spring/early summer I think. The Assassination of Katie Hopkins is a musical by Chris Bush and Matt Winkworth, the Laura Wade play is called Home, I'm Darling.

The British cast is so sh*t I find it beyond hilarious People are willing to pay up to £200 For this The only reason it’s “different” Is because most musical theatre is sh*t If you compare it to actual hip hop rap It’s hardly Missy Elliot or Snoop Dogg It’s nothing new It's laughable that you diss Hamilton for not being 'new' by comparing it to Missy Elliot or Snoop Dogg, neither of whom have had a hit for years. You dont like it - great. Get off this thread and stop torturing yourself!

So glad to hear this - wasn't the Birmingham Rep where it was first staged (and subsequently altered ALOT for future tours/west end) or am i thinking of another Kneehigh show?
