I would actually imagine it would do a try out first, maybe in Paris like An American in Paris? And then do its travelling from there?
Just note to mods, I put it in this part of the board because at the minute it is just announced as a musical with no determined place to go, so it is easier to put it here for people to find and discuss.

I only ask as at the Curve season launch recently apparently said they got the rights to turn a big film into a stage show and are workshopping it. I can't imagine it's this though now i've read the article.

West Yorkshire Playhouse may be in the running since the same co-producers as Strictly Ballroom are involved.

I would imagine they would go straight to a big house in London or New York, purely because I am assuming it is going to be a massive production!

I know someone who has literally been gagging for this to happen for forever. Very exciting news, thanks for sharing Daniel. I thought I heard somewhere though that Baz had refused to sell the rights for this to be performed before, hence such the big delay?

That is marvelous. It surely will be a great musical. I hope I have the means to go when it is on. Hoping for London!

I didn't think it was Baz who was reluctant for the stage version to happen so much as the rights holders for the songs. Though, granted, there's no reason why it can't have an entirely new score...

This could be the sort of long-runner the Palladium has been crying out for. It would be a good show for the palladium but considering it is still being workshopped, it wouldn't be on stage for a good 5 years I think!

Yeah if we wait for London to sort it out it probably WILL be five years. Give it to The Crucible however, and it will be on for Christmas 2017.

This has made my day! I've been hoping for years that it'd make it to the stage! It'd be perfect for the Palladium (or maybe even Drury Lane?)

I'm surprised it's taken as long as it has for this to happen. Great news, though!

the producers are used to big scale productions....I wonder if this will be a big scale production. Really it needs an old theatre - a bigger version of Wilton's music hall.

This is SO exciting.
But it has to be done properly- big budget.. On a big stage. Not at the Curve or anywhere else with rubbish production values.

My daydreams have at various points been occupied with adapting this for the stage, almost can't believe it's being done for real. How have they managed to convince enough rights holders to give away their songs?

Strictly Ballroom had a mix of new songs plus songs from the film so I imagine that'll be the case for Moulin Rouge

I like the sound of this, but am cautious. Other shows have been unable to secure the rights to songs so I'm afraid this might stumble here too...

As someone who has never seen the film, (but soon will thanks to the buy 2 tubes of Pringles and download a mediocre to crap film offer) even I agree it's about bloody time the stage version was made! I had no idea it was a jukebox musical either!

I wouldn't call it a jukebox musical, more a .... creative re-imagining and mixing of songs into something new and fresh.
As long as a few of the iconic songs (like Come what may!) are in, I wouldn't mind if some others are replaced by others for which the rights are available. I think I'll need to dig out the DVD this weekend for a watch!
