I love this thread so much, it's where all the misfits congregate to let out their best sarcasm (me absolutely included in that) Sophie is very young but who knows, she might be brilliant. She has quite a good soprano from what I recall of her Wizard of Oz days.

In the next year or two, they will probably begin slipping a musical theatre but celeb style casting... I'd hazard a guess on maybe seeing Samantha Barks or Carrie Hope Fletcher popping up within the next few years/

I'm really pleased for Alice. I don't buy any of the "she was promised a promotion" lark, she's obviously worked really hard as standby and impressed the producers to the extent that they see her as the best person to take over at this time, and good for her. I haven't seen her yet, though am keen to, and now it seems it will be easier to catch her in the role. I must say though, I've totally given up all hope now of us ever getting a truly new-to-Wicked actress playing Elphaba. It'll be 8.5 years by the time Alice's contract is up! That said, I do wonder if this time last year the announcement was more along the lines of "Alice Fearn joins as Standby and will play lead from July" along the lines of La Ellis back in 2006/7, if we'd have been praising it as the new casting we've all been gagging for for years. Oh well, we'll never know. I'm anxious to judge before seeing someone but I have heard good and bad in Alice's audios, so it'll be good to see her live when the time comes. Also looking forward to seeing all of the other cast members too, it's nice to have some new blood. Bradley Jaden was great when I saw him in Bradford. Incidentally, the notice for Hamilton open auditions says that the contract runs to November 2018 soooo... #RachelJohnForElphabaJuly2019?

Kim Criswell as Glinda... she rocked Over the Rainbow at Musical Marathon! Nah, Kim is your Elphaba. She'd belt the sh*t out of 'Defying Gravity'. Plus, I'd like to see them try to get her on that winch. If it broke down, she would do. her. nut.

I personally think letting an actress develop her Elphaba portrayal as understudy or standby before putting her on as lead makes total sense - a marathon role like Elphaba is really, really hard to determine in an audition process. If you listen to (not sorry) audios of Alice's first performances, they are nowhere near as strong as her performances now. So her developing as standby will only be of benefit to her and the show when she absolutely SMASHES her first lead show.
If they had a brand new Elphaba and Glinda at the same time who were fantastic in audition but get them in front of an audience and it all falls apart, it could massively massively backfire and even a show like Wicked couldn't handle a flop of that scale.

This. Thankyou for saying this sentance most of all. Because I said thr exact same thing a few months ago and it got into a massive arguement saying I hated her voice amd blah blah blah so thank you for saying this!

So reckon we can expect some Alex Grierson/2nd understudy shows after cast change... Alice being bumped up willlikely mean that the Standby and/or 1st understudy won't be rehearsed so will Alex go on rather than them having an emergency Standby on Standby?!
Unless they'll need an emergency Standby standing by as a couple of the swings are leaving so they could be short for a few weeks while new swings get up to speed?!

Fifth cover midwife, Hannah Toy is staying!
My emotional breakdown at stage door was probably the deciding factor.
You're welcome!

"This is the fan page supporting the AMAZING Elphaba standby Laura Pick!! We haven't actually watched her perform yet. Or know anything at all about her really! Though if we don't end up liking her I guess we will have to pretend we do cause we've commissioned the Team Laura Pick cookie cutters already and have even started designing her leaving scrapbook!"

It's been like 8 years since brand new Elphaba .
Guess Elphaba is just too big a role to risk with a newbie.

We haven't actually watched her perform yet. Or know anything at all about her really! That made me Google her & her agent's website says she graduated from Mountview in 2013 which would make her only about 25, assuming she went at the usual age. That's fairly young for Elphaba so I wouldn't necessarily expect her to get promoted at the 2018 cast change. Am I right in thinking the only lead Elphaba London has had who was only in her 20s was Alexia Khadime?

EDIT: Kerry's also only 38 so would have been about 28 when she took over as lead too.
