So reckon we can expect some Alex Grierson/2nd understudy shows after cast change... Alice being bumped up willlikely mean that the Standby and/or 1st understudy won't be rehearsed so will Alex go on rather than them having an emergency Standby on Standby?! Unless they'll need an emergency Standby standing by as a couple of the swings are leaving so they could be short for a few weeks while new swings get up to speed?! Alex Rosa Claudia etc will get a scheduled show each anyway

If Alice calls out it's unlikely that both Standby and 1st understudy will have had their put-in. Depending on whether Alex is needed to Swing then it maybe an emergency Standby being brought back to go on for the green girl.

In reply to the above point, yes Alex would go on ahead of them bringing in an emergency cover, though if she did go on and no one else was rehearsed, they may well bring in someone to standby for her

To the best of my knowledge the 2nd cover has only ever gone on when there's been multiple absences. Jennifer Tierney didn't even get to go on at all, but admittedly it's been about five years since she left the cast so the policy could've changed since then.

I think it's a nice courtesy thing they do if the performer wants it, but there's no written in stone policy. Trying to think from the last few years, Natalie McQueen got a scheduled Elphaba show, Kerry Enright a Morrible (when she was 2nd u/s), Helen Woolf a Glinda, Maria Coyne a Glinda and Russell Walker a Wizard so it's not that uncommon but at the same time there've been performers that didn't get one.

Thanks for the clarification martello736 I remember just before Jennifer Tierney left, Rachel was off and Nikki went on - I felt really sorry for Jen given that she'd never been able to play the role, and Nikki was staying!

That still annoys me to this day, especially when you see how many shows the understudies have got since. Rotten luck!

It's been like 8 years since brand new Elphaba . Guess Elphaba is just too big a role to risk with a newbie. The general public won't care who is Elphaba, so it's not really a risk at all as long as they hire someone who can sing really well and act fairly well! There are plenty of women out there who would fit the bill.

Is it any wonder Wicked fans are often the laughing stock of theatre.

Of course it is, absolutely desperate for attention. Is it any wonder Wicked fans are often the laughing stock of theatre. People right across the industry genuinely have a good laugh at some of the behaviour associated with Wicked fans - sure, the support and loyalty is hugely appreciated, but they do give everyone a chuckle. And long may it continue!

I'm hoping that Jessamy and Alexandra will get to perform as Elphaba a few more times before the cast change. Christine Dwyer was given a far lighter standby schedule while she was preparing to become the Broadway lead a few years ago, and the understudy Carla Stickler got to perform a lot of extra shows that otherwise wouldn't have gone to her.
It's so sad to me that Jessamy is leaving in two months, having had only two opportunities to go on for Elphaba. I hope she gets to do it at least once more before she leaves. She sounded so good in those little clips that appeared on here at the time.

I don't think I was ever like the obsessives when I was their age. It seems such odd behaviour to me and I'm not sure what it achieves

Well I'm 16 and I really love the show to an insane level, I have a huge Wicked mural painted on my wall, there was a period where I watched the same Wicked bootleg weekly a few years ago and I listened to the full soundtrack at least once a day at one point but, thank god, I've never made one of these Team ____ accounts on Twitter or tried to become friends with a cast member so hopefully I don't count as a crazy?

Not at all Lewis - I feel that I should clarify my earlier comment as I wouldn't ever want to give the impression of being judgey. I love my Musicals as much as the next stagey so-and-so, all I seem to listen to is cast recordings etc etc etc. We all have our ways of showing our love for our favourite shows, whether that's writing the occasional letter to our favourite actors, painting murals, ticking off understudies as you see them in their various tracks - I think all of this is great. We can all do whatever want to love our shows and I'd firmly say don't let anyone try to tell you not to. However, in my mind, the issues arise - and this isn't solely an issue with Wicked. Some particular actors attract it, some shows do, but Wicked is by and far the worse - when people take it too far. To a level that's beyond rational. So for example, people who bombard performers with tweets 24/7, people who go give ridiculous (and often extravagant) gifts to cast members, making "team" fanpages on Twitter for cast members who they've never seen before, hanging around stage door and listening to the show through the wall...you get the idea. My personal opinion is be respectful, don't cross the line and no one will have any issue NB - LaLuPone, I realise I've said "you" loads in this post - I know I'm replying to your post but I don't mean you in any of this, I'm just speaking generally

I think theres a lot to be said for channeling your love of the show. Lewis, you seem to have it about right and its so encouraging that youre able to discuss your passion here and that as a younger fan you join in the discussions here. Dont change, as daniel says Wicked attracts a whole other level of strange behaviour. Those convinced that twitter friendship is real friendship, I find it almost unhealthy to have that level of obsession

I've never got the whole stage door before a show, then between shows and after evening show thing. Why would the cast want to make polite chit chat to the same people three times in the same day?!
I've noticed that the people who do this don't stand right by the stage door either. They tend to edge away, seemingly to distance themselves from those crazy regular people who are "just" getting a programme signed.
A nice "I enjoyed the show, can you please sign this" is very welcome. Expecting small talk and attention when performers are on a short break or rushing for a train home, not so much.

I've not seen the pre show stage dooring anywhere else to the same extent as it happens at Wicked. The only time I've ever gone to stage door pre show it was to get something signed as I couldn't wait around after. It felt like intruding on personal time though

I actually cannot remember the last time I have been past the Apollo Victoria and there hasn't been at least three people waiting at the stage door, either at lunchtime or between shows.

I once walked past at 3am in the morning and there were only 2 people Gotta get the prime spot for staring uncomfortably at Suzie Mathers whilst she desperately tries to get away

I find this topic really interesting. It's good to hear how the fans of Wicked show their enthusiasm for the show in different ways!
Personally, I have seen the show 20 times (21 at cast change) and that is plenty enough for me - 2 or 3 times a year. However, I'm being extra fanboyish and seeing the show in Philadelphia in August whilst it just happens to be there during my summer holiday!
I collect every new cast's programme along with all my tickets in a book. Plus, I have the Grimmerie and the 'Around the World in One Short Day' books on display in my room, along with a painting of the Wicked logo (by my friend) and a wordle I was bought by a work colleague! I also sing 'Defying Gravity' daily...ha!
My friends and family all appreciate how much I love the show but always say 'Wicked...again?!' I don't know what they'd say if I'd seen it 200+ times!!!
I personally find the excessive tweeting of cast and stage door gathering numerous times for one performance a bit over the top. It doesn't help that some cast members always reply, spurring on the 'you're my friend' idea...
I saw The Addams Family last Saturday and the cast (including Carrie Hope Fletcher and Oliver Ormson) came into our restaurant between shows and had an hour of uninterrupted time together (I say uninterrupted but I was giving them a little look every now and then because I was so amazed to see them!)I know Carrie is in another league to some of the Wicked cast in terns of vlogging, tweeting etc but she looked genuinely relieved to be away from screaming fans. Sometimes I wonder how they cope with all the attention!
It just makes me hope that there aren't certain individuals who will take this Alice casting news too far and bombard her even more than they do now. Tweeting her saying that you've been 'crying for hours' because she got the part full-time. Come on...everyone knows that's an exaggeration!!? Not trying to pinpoint anyone, it's just simply my opinion! You don't need to tweet like that to get their attention...
On a side note, I'm intrigued to see the new cast! Looking forward to seeing Sophie's interpretation of Glinda! 😃

I remember when I stage doored on Rachel's final Friday show for a quick selfie, the girl before me seemed to be whispering to her about her personal life and I heard Rachel saying "strong woman" or something. I was standing there so confused, does this girl think Rachel actually cares about her boyfriend troubles or whatever, she's not her therapist! 🙄 And then we passed the Stage Door at the AV the following day on the way to Rent (at about 1:15) and the crowd there was probably bigger than the crowd after the Friday show! There was even some adults there amongst the "Wicked Squad" of teenagers as I think they call themselves. There was one adult there who I'd met at theatre café that had said he wasn't even going to the matinee so must have turned up early just to squeeze in some extra Rachel-stalking!
