Do people still do that thing of looking down from the Gods to see empty stalls seat and then move down in a break or after interval? Was a big thing back in the day.

When Six was beginning at that tiny Arts Theatre as was, a bloke, not small, came across me to sit in the tight seats with a pint full to the brim in each hand. How he sat down without spilling a drop I don't know. I sat in terror of having beer all over me. But fun thing, show was cancelled cos of back stage accident. Then just recently at Noises Off, couple came to sit next to me with full bottle of red and two glass glasses. Everyone seemed to have a glass of wine. ( yeah, felt a bit left out..) I suppose not much of a problem with a comedy, laughing, and son to mask the chink, gurgle and slurp. But it’s every show/play now isn't it? We have forgotten how to sit, watch and listen without some kind of ‘support’. Someone dropped a glass glass in the aisle- nobody seemed to bother. It rolled about.
I dunno - does it matter? Shows seem to want our participation, our relaxed behaviour; there is a desperate need for serious theatre to attract young people so making the evening an alcoholic party seems to be the way forward. Kids’ shows demand noise, reaction and dancing. So we grow up expecting theatre to be participatory and loud. Like discos/clubs/all other young people stuff. If actors don’t train the kids how to behave, how will they know?
I take in water in case I get a cough.

It is lovely to see the greats at the top of their game -that’s what we go to theatre for but I also love to spot the future stars. Saw Rory Kinnear kill it as Tranio at RSC,totally stole every scene. And David Tennant, also RSC obviously destined for the big time and many , many others. I’ve spotted huge talent that never got anywhere too. So what does it take, eh?

I do wonder if they'll keep actor/actress when people like Emma Corrin are no doubt strong contenders Maybe ‘performer ‘ in a drama, in a musical etc…

I’m very sorry you didn't enjoy it, craig. I went last Friday and thought it was very good. I saw the original production and one since and thought this one every bit as good as the original. Maybe too subtle for you? ( only kidding)

Finally got Rush tix for this on second attempt to go past payment page ? Anyone else have issues ? I had tickets for allegiance then payment page took so long to go through times me out then. Lost them 😳 But I’ve seen a few different productions of this way back and loved it one west end production way back my parents were in hysterics my mother fell off her seat literally ! I think that was Peter Egan and Patricia hodge ? And another production was Maggie steed playing dotty Sylvester McCoy Selsdon a great production too so was looking forward to this as felicity Kendal is a real idol of mine . Circle was full looked full else where too and huge applause screams and cheers (maybe family ?) for me there was something missing had all the elements but they just don’t seem to gel at moment ….. felicity maybe mis cast ? She was very quiet 🤫 throughout …. I’d give it 3 ⭐️ the last Scene worked better but still lots of missed opportunities throughout One of the funniest running gags from previous productions is sadly missing … they used to duck every time they walked past the windows in the second scene when it was backstage hilarious visuals they all did was glaringly missing here . My saving grace was Tracy Ann Oberon she had some hilarious asides looks to the audience little giggles I’ve not seen in other productions she seems to have it sussed. Rest of the cast were good but not outstanding considering is the 40th anniversary production I got seats for £25 anything over this I’d feel robbed For many years sometimes my partner and I have quoted Spain there all in Spain at random times stuck in our head hope this gets better once all settled Looking forward to this soon. In our family it is the lines on sardines we all quote.

I do hope those kids are able to choose their own lives. The media will pursue them for sure.

That is a season with no ambition. No new writing No history play Only one non comedy Are they struggling for income? If they are struggling for income, they need to do comedies and the GCSE syllabus. And do them in a fairly straightforward way.

OMG in such a serious play with all the depth of character required. Only time I’ve seen this done is once in a comedy , many moons ago Donald Sinden of beloved memory commenting on a cough, a famous incident I think, brought the house down and then the wonderful Diana Rigg asking for a prompt in Who’s Afraid ..but she kept character, her dagger looks would have slowed anyone…

"Kate is looking for her 4th private secretary in five years. No questions asked" But kate parades her kids around in 1950's clothes so it's all okay Can’t see why that matters. They wear very traditional clothes in public. They look pretty normal in their own clothes. She is teaching them to have a uniform. Every item she and the children wear sells out immediately. She is aware of that. She favours small designers for the kids and who the hell she likes for herself. Tbh I wish she dressed the children more like everyone else does, T shirts, joggers, yes, nice dresses where appropriate and so on.. but generally not so formally. George in a shirt, tie and jacket at the tennis last summer in a heatwave was painful to watch. I think the Tindells have got it more or less right, haven't they, in many ways.

Let’s face it the system is bonkers. There are many, many people out there who do charity work and are ‘unsung’, many who have worked with difficulties, many who champion causes and many actors and theatre people who do brilliant work both in media and beyond. The ones that get honours are usually deserving but only a small number of the many who also deserve. And don't get me started on the women’s footballers. Football is a profession you can’t continue in for very long, so winning the European Cup is significant, never mind the example to other girls and young women in football and in sport as a whole. How mean not to award the whole flippin’ team. Who makes these decisions? And the levels - laughable. A bloke who was a volunteer reader aged 100 gets a basic level award he isn’t going to enjoy for long, the woman whose child died from air pollution and is working to improve the situation gets a higher level. Both should be recognised but why not have a simple system of awards with one level for community work? This is a big discussion and on the whole the right people get recognition but the bloomin’ Empire is well gone and we should get ourselves organised, people.

Slow Horses ( on Apple TV) has been glorious over the last few weeks, finishing today. You can’t binge it cos they drop an episode a week so back to old fashioned tv watching. They trailed a third series so all good. I really recommend. On ITVX A Spy Among Friends def one of the best of the year, acting amazing and again nicely timed differently so you can binge it over the holiday. and The Detectorists - a very clever piece of writing referencing the Xmas season, so well acted.

Strongly agree about Marty Rea. Such stage presence. He was superb in Beginning by David Eldridge at the Gate Theatre. Such a shame that no-one outside of Ireland has heard of him. Oh Yes, I'd forgotten about The Beginning, he was excellent in that, never seen him be anything other excellent. Brendan Coyle was in the orignal production playing Brendan the barman. I saw a good few photos of him in that production on twitter when the show opened in Dublin last month. People were doing a photo comparsion of 'then and now'. I saw that Jim Norton was in that orignal cast, best known as Bishop Len Brennan from 'Father Ted', but an experienced stage actor. I saw him as the judge this year in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Anyway, there's a nice photo of Meryl Streep with the original Weir cast backstage on twitter, sorry I'm not sure how to post it here, i'm not even sure if I can post it here, copyright etc. Thought so, the ole brain ticking along. I saw the original production which won the Olivier that year. I was on the panel and met Brendan Coyle at the event. He was nominated for best supporting I think. Honours that year went to Kevin Spacey for best actor, The Iceman Cometh in which he was truly astounding. I chatted to him too. He was very nice.

Malaga was 20c today and sunny so next year that's where I am heading to for Christmas. At least I'll have the hotel staff to speak to! Not being bah humbug! But I've not spoken to anyone today and made a turkey dinner for myself that I didn't enjoy. So why not swap it for paella and a bit of sun. 😀 Book your tix early! Looks decent weather today, a bit of sunshine so get out and about if you can. I always say every year that we should go away for Xmas. Next year for sure.

Agreed. Show dance always a nothing recently. In the olden days it was something because the regular dances were more traditional. Now with the stuff they put out there, like Fleur’s Beyoncé effort, there is nowhere to go with the show dance. It would be very cumbersome for the viewers to vote for choice of which dances they do but maybe, get them to do their best score and their worst so we can see improvement and also the best dances again. And why four in the final? Go back to three or even two and add more dances! Less of the backstories please.

Greg Doran told us that no able-bodied actor should ever play R-III again. Several people here agreed with him (I didn't), interested to hear their views on this one. If this is precisely what he said, then very odd. It means that only able bodies etc actors can play most of the repertoire in classic and modern drama. It is a division of the worst kind.

Happy Christmas everyone. Thanks anthony40 for setting the ball rolling. Hope we can all get out and about, even go the theatre! But if on your own, open the choccie liqueurs and come along onto the board for a bit of company and a moan about the telly.

So Grandma had to go. Pity. I personally don't understand how Will is still there. The results are sometimes so odd that conspiracy theories are bound to lurk.
