hmm...okay, so by now everyone might know that I'm the race police around here.. but if she just covered it as a standalone song, honestly there's no cause for offense. There should never be offense in a fan singing a song from her favourite show. What these people are doing is extreme ethnic profiling and it goes too far. And that is a pity. Because in my opinion it is the main thing that keeps racism intact. I would never ever judge someone on race. This youtube poster actually is the victim of racism. Just let her be. Stop thinking in race, especially on occasions where it really does not matter. In the last season of "top model" here on tv, there were 10 girls. No one ever mentioned the fact that one of the girls was black. She was a top contender and one of my favourites. Nobody ever mentioned anything about her race. Except, she did it herself all the time. Complaining about how she couldn't do a photoshoot with lions and giraffes in the zoo because 'i am african american" and people like us don't do that. A week later there was a photoshoot in a forest "i can't do that because I don't want to contribute to the saying "forest n****". In all the interviews, she constantly mentioned it, why are you going to win? Because I'm African American and I want to be an example. Ehm, no other qualities? It is really difficult to see you as a person, when your whole life is just about ethnic profiling. In the end, she was impossible to work with and was sent home. Nobody ever mentioned anything about her race, except she. Of course she found it racist when she was sent home, but I think she is the true racist. She judges herself and others on race. We should definitely be aware of this. Ethnic profiling is harmful. We are people.

One hilarious comment went something like 'Elphaba is green, but anyone is aloud to sing her song...' yeah, because real life green witches don't actually exist. Erm.... care to explain this then?

Many people have covered Ol' Man River, including Ramin Karimloo, Colm Wilkinson and Seth McFarlane.
Is this offensive?

I mean I find Seth McFarlane's mere existence pretty offensive, but I do fall on the side of "it's okay to cover a song outside the context of the show as long as you aren't angling to play the part for which you are clearly massively unsuited for race reasons" generally. It cuts in every direction, look at all the covers of I Am What I Am as well. Do it with respect and make sure it's clear you're doing it out of admiration for the song, and I don't see the problem. Unless of course you like to court drama and will respond to criticism by flouncing off and making a fuss rather than quietly saying "I understand what you're saying, I am just singing the song for the love of it, nothing more" when questioned, of course.

There are lyrics as originally used in Ol' Man River that, if sung by a white person, would most definitely be offensive and arguably for anyone who sang them, if taken out of context. Robeson changed the lyrics to something he felt comfortable singing, as have others since, including Hammerstein.

Maybe Johnathan Groff is starting as King George over here, alongside Lin as Hamilton for a few months (please make it happen).
Roll on November 2017......

A question that's come up discussing this show with friends:
Can a British cast do justice to this musical?

I tend to think people are over analyzing this show and how American it is/must be.

I don't know enough about this show (and don't want to, before I see it), but what are the potential problems that a British cast would face in comparison to other American shows?

A question that's come up discussing this show with friends: Can a British cast do justice to this musical? Playing now or coming soon to London: 42nd Street An American in Paris Bodyguard The Book of Mormon Dirty Dancing Dreamgirls In the Heights (ahem) Jersey Boys Judy Garland The Lion King Motown Wicked Methinks the Brits can handle American shows just fine.

I think, generally, yes. But that's not to say that they won't have several American cast members in it.

A question that's come up discussing this show with friends: Can a British cast do justice to this musical? Very much so. A good example here is when I saw Kinky Boots in New York, I was very vocal that if it was going to come across that Billie Porter must come over with the show, he was amazing and truly gave one of those memorable performances, well roll on the West End opening with a new kid in town Matt Henry and I feared the worst, I shouldn't have though, he smashed it and even gave a performance better than Billie Porter. What do I know?

I thought this was interesting, spending time with the percussionists of Hamilton. There's a few moments of them drumming to the show where you can see how some of the elements come together. It's not your average musical for the percussion team.

A question that's come up discussing this show with friends: Can a British cast do justice to this musical? So long as they don't feel the need to cast any 'names', and cast according to talent alone, then absolutely yes. Hamilton is a truly American story, but no more than Les Mis is French. If a piece of theatre is as good as Hamilton, it can be told anywhere in the world. Sometimes it goes the other way. Kinky Boots is set in Northampton but opened on Broadway with appalling British accents. It feels more at home in London to me!

Third of tickets will be £55 or less, 20% £35 or less. Regular top price £85 then premiums (I'm guessing £150). Perfectly reasonable for this show.
Baz still says Lin wants to perform in London 2018.

What does daily and weekly mean? Am I being stupid? I may be wrong, but I would interpret that to mean that an allocation will be released to the lottery each day as well as weekly. So, for example, every Friday at 12 noon, 20 tickets would be drawn for each of the performances during the following week - additionally, each day at 4pm another 20 tickets would be drawn from the lottery for that day's performance.
