An involuntary giggle at the belt situ, nothing more. No snark. I see little point in taking a film that was critically well received, deciding to make it into a musical but changing the character of the protagonist, or coming up with lines that are different but less pithy/funny than the original. However if people like change for the sake of it go right ahead!I’ll just rewatch the film (for the 45th time 😲) You’re completely overlooking the fact that it was a novel first. If you’re such a purist, you should be taking issue with the movie writers for all the changes they made The film itself took many liberties with “the original”, including softening Andy’s character, so the musical may well be making less changes than the film did to the source material. Either way, it’s just a different take on the same story and different things work in different mediums.

Yes and at least stateside, a huge bestseller. Thoughts were that it was based on the author's experiences of working with Anna 'Nuclear' Wintour at Vogue but to avoid a crippling lawsuit, she managed to skirt the issue....

I'm sorry, this may well have been covered in the previous 20 pages of the thread, but in my defence there's 20 pages of it - are the first four rows at the Dominion being held back, do we think?

Pretty sure this show has a passerelle, so perfectly possible it's due to the stage extending out and they just haven't worked out how far it will extend yet.

I'm sorry, this may well have been covered in the previous 20 pages of the thread, but in my defence there's 20 pages of it - are the first four rows at the Dominion being held back, do we think? They definitely were being because I had to change my date and they sent me a screenshot with them all showing as on sale but when I queried it I was told I couldn’t switch to one of those seats. At the time (and it could have just been placeholder pricing) both the central blocks were still £87.50, with the front row of the outer two blocks looking like they would be £67.50 seats.

Thank you all! I'm interested, but debating holding back for a cheaper restricted option near the front/possible rush seats...

Um well. In my head, the film is classier than this musical. The score in the film is classier also. Like a musical extrapolated from that score would have been lovely. They went down a chintzy route. Some high points though.

It sounds more Mrs. Doubtfire than Groundhog Day. Shallow and synthy. But there’s a few songs that aren’t.

Sounds like they still haven’t improved it from america
Sigh* whats the point of out of town try outs if they don’t take feedback on board and change the music/songs

Will wait to hear more, but I really do want a good fun musical at the Dominion for the next year or so rather than something boring. So hoping it's all right.

Well I loved it, and so did everyone I spoke to after 😊. The first act is great fun, the second act gets a little more serious and has a few slower songs. I'd watched the film recently to remind myself of it all. The casting is spot on, especially for Andy and Emily, who both have beautiful voices too. Although they should probably stop calling Andy fat when the actress is tiny 😂. Vanessa Williams was great as Miranda but I'm not sure about her singing ability, but it could just be first night nerves. She doesn't actually sing a lot in the show, especially in the first act. Matt Henry will always be Lola to me, every time he talked and sang I was back to Kinky Boots in my head, but that's my own fault for listening to the cast recording constantly for years and Matt's voice is so unique.
It didn't feel like the very first preview to me, it's obviously been rehearsed a lot. I'm back again on the 16th so it will be interesting to see what's changed.

Does anyone have a song list from last night or a screen grab if it was in the programme?
Thanks in advance!

It sounds more Mrs. Doubtfire than Groundhog Day. Shallow and synthy. But there’s a few songs that aren’t. Just to play devil's advocate (no pun intended), they may not be using full orchestrations/full pit yet until the songs are confirmed as working, not to mention size of Plymouth house/pit compared to Dominion. Not uncommon for tryouts to hold back on number of musicians hired to save on costs but I could be wrong here.

Thanks.
Looks like they kept AND cut a lot.
Gone are: - Miranda's Coming - That's All - Here's To The Jobs That Pay The Rent - Cerulean - No Problem - When A Legend Is Born
New songs look to be: - House of Miranda - I Only Love You For Your Body - How To Survive at Runway (unless it is a retread of 'At Runway') - In or Out - Miranda, Girl - Paris, City of Dreams
Vanessa Williams mentioned that her big number in Act Two "Stay on Top" was a slow start that launched into a techno vibe whereas the number in Chicago was a jazz-tinged showtune so my guess is that much of the retained material has been newly orchstrated.
Cheers to iwant2beatthetheatre for posting!!
