Len Cariou was only 39 when Sweeney Todd opened in 1979 so it's not unusual casting to have someone Groban's age. (He was, it seems, far too young to play Frederick Egerman in A Little Night Music at 33 though. But that's theatre!)

I always find people do this - claim actors are "too young" to play roles in revivals of stuff that was popular in the 60's, 70's, 80's etc.
Yet, upon closer inspection you nearly always find these latest actors are pretty much the same age as their original production counterparts!
It's called perspective! Who you see as young/old changes drastically as you advance in years yourself!!!!!!!!!
Another recent "protest" was people saying Sheridan Smith is too young for Shirley Valentine.
The opposite problem is more of an issue. There are some people who think it's perfectly acceptable for Glenn Close to play Norma Desmond (a 50 year old character) at the age of 75!!!!!!!!

I don't think he's too young, but I do think he could do with being a bit more like a man who has obviously been put through the ringer. Also, those posters make him look a bit like Daniel Radcliffe.
Lovett though - lord, no. Far too pretty. Please don't make Lovett a 'pretty' role, it makes no sense and some of us would like to have some roles left we can do!

I think we have different ideas of 'pretty'! But that production was weird looking overall, actor-musician and more modern than most productions. LuPone looks like she's a small costume change away from playing Miss Hannigan. Way better than making her a traditionally attractive, young blonde woman who looks like a pretty costumed doll in the pics.

Well, I would say that is a prettified Lovett (or at least substantially glam for someone with LuPone looks. I mean she looks like a runway model compared to Lansbury, but then I don't share the general concern that you have. We'll know soon enough.

I suppose! My main concern isn't so much this production, as it potentially informing future productions, both professional and amateur. I'm sure she'll sing it well, it just seems a shame for another role to fall to the people who also get everything else.

Fantastic production, all around. Being able to hear the score with a huge orchestra like that was a dream come true. Heading to London in the morning but seeing this again a few more times when I get back in a couple weeks.

Do we think that this will transfer to the West End eventually?

Solid production overall with some beautiful stage images; fantastic vocals from Groban; excellent comedic contributions from Ashford (although overplayed at times); and a strong ensemble and orchestra.
Worth seeing, but I wouldn't break the bank to do so nor do I think it is so good that if you can't see it, you'll deeply regret it later.

Maybe it might get filmed?

Hmm. I have no idea. The vast majority of the physical stage elements are dark and muted in color and tone. I'm not sure it would hold up well in video, but no doubt they have ways to deal with that.

Opening today! I’m looking forward to reading the reviews, and wish I was in New York to see it.
Do you think there will be a cast recording?

Looking forward to seeing this next week, but very apprehensive about our view. We booked the cheapest Rear Mezz seats, which already came to around $90 including fees, but the seat plan reviews don't seem to be great.

Based on some of the comments in the linked thread below, you may wish to bring binoculars or opera glasses if you have them so you can zoom in on some of the moments that really benefit from a good view of the characters and their facial expressions. The Lunt-Fontanne is often referred to as a barn of a theatre for good reason.

Please report back, I have a similar seat booked for my trip in May and am also a bit worried about it. Hope you enjoy the show!

I’m just going to be honest here. Rear mezz at that theater is absolutely awful. The sight lines can make it severely obstructed and you’re a million miles away. I would bring binoculars and also ask the ushers before taking your seat, for a booster seat. Don’t be embarrassed to ask and I PROMISE you won’t regret it.

I sat at the back for Little Mermaid and remember the stage seeming miles away.
