I absolutely do not believe they are making this into 2 films.

If they go by the book then fans are not going to be happy. Better to just go with the staged version.
Though I do not know of any actor who can get that into the Elphaba. She just seems to not have the ability to show joy with Fiyero. I really do not understand her casting.

What’s the issue with the book?

It bears very little relation to the musical. Much darker in tone with lots more ‘story’.

The book was such a chore to get through, I nearly gave up about 3 times!

I absolutely do not believe they are making this into 2 films. People said similar things when I posted about Mamma Mia 2 going into production, weeks before a press release went out.

I believe it will be two films, I just think it's a stupid idea!

No one needs a 5 hour Wicked film (be it in two parts or not) - and I say this as a hardcore fan who has seen it a lot 😂

I can’t take credit for that phrase really, it was pilfered from a lecturer at Uni.

I absolutely do not believe they are making this into 2 films. People said similar things when I posted about Mamma Mia 2 going into production, weeks before a press release went out. Very different situation as that was 10 years apart from the first one and it isn't like they were trying to rip the original musical into two parts at the same time (which would have been truly horrific for Mamma Mia, but turned out rather well the way they did it). The only way I can see a double Wicked film work is if the first is essentially the stage musical and the second an original 'part 2'. It would be like Love Never Dies all over again...

I think there are three more books in the series, so there's plenty of additional material to make a second film. But I really can't see the wisdom behind splitting the existing musical into two films, if that's what the plan is (which I doubt).

What’s the issue with the book? I read the book before seeing the musical, and I remember thinking - how the heck have they made that into a musical? The answer? They got rid of all the rubbish, meandering plotlines and...er...adult material! The musical is a much more streamlined and cohesive version of the story.

When it was well over an hour & they still hadn't even left Hobbiton I gave up. Just because you can make 3 movies out of 1 fairly short book doesn't mean that you should!

I think @tbfl was more likely referencing the lack of belief in their inside knowledge of the film industry and what's going into production.

The original book is much more political, and i believe based on the idea of George W Bush making Al Quaida the common enemy in a war. The musical included lots of Wizard of Oz references, and made it much more family friendly. They're very different

I actually read the book after watching the show for the first time and found it vastly superior. It's dark, it's political, and it doesn't sugarcoat things - especially the ending. The musical is essentially a Disneyfied version of the book made as kid-friendly as possible.

The musical does indeed work better as a musical.

The book and the musical are two very separate entities with very little in common. One of the main bonuses of the book that I found was (spoiler alert) Fiyero getting killed quite early on.
I actually enjoyed the book and the three sequels.
