Yeah the new single recording definitely missed the mark for me. But I assume that I'm not the one they are targeting with this.
Who that might actually be, I'm not sure.
The whole thing feels bizarre. First off, the preview periods are over 6 weeks. I think that's longer than the West End preview period. And I didn't realize that the opening falls the day after ALW's birthday. So the previews began the day before POTO was supposed to close and now the opening is after his birthday. Just feels awkward across the board.
Meanwhile POTO has been sold out since they announced it was closing in September. Foolishly they look like they are barrelling towards closing in April when they could easily have it continue and continue selling out through the summer... But what do I know?
Anyway - I was interested in Cinderella/Bad Cinderella when I first heard some of the music during the lockdowns. And was happy to hear that the Broadway orchestra will be 18 members. But worry that they're going heavy camp on this making it more along School of Rock musical comedy type of thing.

From the greatest musical of the 21st Century...to an artist in residence at the Lincoln Centre...to writing and starring in 2 very successful Off Broadway productions...to this utter trash...
I hope she earns enough to pay for her required therapy when it's all over in a month x

There IS a good show in there somewhere - it JUST needs to know its tone and audience - as well as a new set, new book, half a new score (half thrown away) the fairy-godmother role completely rewritten, the end of Act 1 totally reworked, the necklace/locket sub-plot looked at, a look at the fact that all the characters hates each other, new chorus songs and a proper duet (or two) in the show. It also needs to be alternative woke/progressive for a reason - not for the 2023 cheesy and tedious sake of it. What IS the message of the show? To conform or not? London was not clear at all. Good luck to them all - I personally don't think all theses changes can/will be made in one year since the dreadful show i saw in London.

While I think Fennel playing with the modern / conventional aspects of the story is quite clever, none of it works dramatically. That it's an enjoyable show is almost entirely down to ALWs contributions (yet again) and Zippel to a lesser extent. He needs better collaborators.

Of COURSE the show is meant to be progressive and woke. Andrew has basically said over the past 4 years that its a modern retelling of the classic fairytale. Andrew's main point of adding mixed race casting, gay characters (both no bad thing) to a complicated modern TikTok ideology of beauty, self love and conformity in 2020 was exactly the reason why he created this show. That's his "progressive" - exactly the same way he rewrote Starlight adding female engines, giving Dinah brown hair and changing other characters, songs and roles most famously making Poppa - Mamma! Andrew is trying to be hip, current and cool and failing. Sadly these woke changes in Starlight and the whole idea of a progressive Cinderella (at least written so badly) are mostly terrible. This is nowhere near the standard of the modern theatre classics of Six, Hamilton, &JULIET etc.

That is a lovely dress. One of the things I disliked about the original is that the ball gown made Cinderella look a bit ridiculous (despite the script, etc saying she looked amazing). Linedy's vocals might make me want to shove cheese in my ears, but she'll look lovely in that dress onstage.

What I mean by 'conventional' is an old fashioned and romantic fairytale-style romance, which is depicted musically with songs like "Only You, Lonely You". This works in opposition to the "modern take" idea.
