Manchester’s AO arena doesn’t seem to have anything booked in for May 2023 after Magic Mike on 2nd and Elton going in on 31st. Not that’s been announced so far anyway.

For the exposure and attention it gives around the the word it really should be an impressive city and arena it's held in. I imagine the powers that be will want to show they aren't London focused and so they won't give it to London but they really should because it's impressive and culturally known plus has impressive venues like the o2. There are many cities I'd really not want to represent us on a world stage and have images of beamed around the world to be quite honest.

Eurovision doesn't always go to capitals these days, especially where a capital has previously held the contest. Turin, Rotterdam, Malmö, Dusseldorf all in the last decade. London's done it four times so I'm pretty sure they'll go somewhere new, Glasgow is a good bet after they did such a good job of COP26; Manchester has an advantage because the BBC Eurovision team are now based in Salford; Cardiff has a shout because it's never been in Wales and the Principality Stadium is available (although the EBU don't like stadium venues and Cardiff doesn't have an airport with a lot of flights). Any of the three (and most of the other candidates) will do a brilliant job and showcase the UK.

What I would find more unbelievable is if you genuinely thought all our cities were fantastic and stunning and you would be proud to showcase them to the rest of the world? I thought not.

Quote : “I thought not” . Don’t you dare be so arrogant and condescending as to put words in my mouth . Everywhere has something to offer in the cities and regions of this country , not just London , people and talent make this world , not merely a superficial and subjective view of something you personally consider to be “fantastic and stunning”. What I find unbelievable is you’re actually on the admin team of this site .

Try telling that to @herefortheatre though. Sadly I’d have issues with Glasgow, from a political view, due to recent disparaging comments about Eurovision and the U.K. from the city council’s leader . Otherwise a fine job would be done there too , in conjunction with the BBC. I’d like to see Cardiff host if there was a suitable venue .

I think it's between Glasgow and Manchester.

It won't be London for the reasons given. Eurovision host countries/cities do the full tourist brochure thing, and gloss over the rubbish bits of the cities and countries, so we don't need to worry about that as far as the tv experience is concerned, and it's not as if London doesn't have run down areas.
Part of me would love it to be in Glasgow, but Glasgow does have a lot of issues at the moment, and there were a lot of problems in the run up to and during COP26. If they've learned lessons (not just used it as a phrase to brush off criticism) then it could be OK. The council leader is an idiot, so it would depend a lot on whether she is needed to pull strings or whether it's down to the BBC. They'd need to fix public transport, or at least make arrangements so that there are temporary time-tables in place, and that requires political support. But it would be good for the BBC as the Hydro arena (as featured in the Netflix Eurovision drama) is very close to their Glasgow base.
Manchester would be good too. It's years since I've been to the Manchester Arena (pre-bombing), so I don't know if it's been modernised, but it was quite dated in style compared to the O2 or the Hydro, which is the only drawback I can think of.

Wildcard - Aberdeen.
I just saw a bit of a feature on the Scottish news. It seems the Aberdeen Arena/Aberdeen has already invested £30,000 in putting together information for a bid. The minimum criteria being 10,000 auditorium, room for 2000 (I think) journalists, lots of hotels and near to an airport. I missed the end of the story, so they might have given more away. Presumably Aberdeen thinks they meet those criteria.

On other forums, Birmingham has been suggested and actually it'd be ideal because it's well connected and has lots of facilities like the NEC to hold Eurovision.

Birmingham did it last time in 1998 which is probably its only negative point...

I am amazed that Swindon is trying to bid for it ...
Not exactly an obvious option

Birmingham did it last time in 1998 which is probably its only negative point... I was dismissing it on the grounds that it was there last time, but it was such a long time ago that there's grounds for it going back. But I think it could be grounds to pick another suitable venue if all else is looking equal.

Birmingham is also about to host the Commonwealth Games. So another city should get a chance in the spotlight

Thinking about this a bit more, given that we'll just be surrogate hosts for Ukraine, perhaps there won't be as much showing off of the city as normal. It will be interesting to see what choices they make for the introduction videos.
The host city will benefit from a lot of visitors at the time, and it's inevitable that there will be coverage of things to do and see locally, but it's likely to be more low key than usual.

This is what I think has been lost in all the excitement, whatever city it ends up in is just a stand-in host so the contest could still actually go ahead & not be cancelled next year. The UK didn't win so it's not about the UK. I still think, where possible, it should be about the Ukraine as much as possible....the hosts, the interval entertainment etc. As Jojo said, am not sure how they'd do the postcard videos but once they're inside the arena, they could be anywhere & don't have to mention where it actually is.

The BBC archive (@bbcarchive) on twitter is currently tweeting an interesting thread about other times the UK has taken over hosting duties for another country - this it seems is the fifth time this has happened.
