Hannah Waddingham to host the awards is inspired.
Jason Manford was fine, if boring and a bit ill fitting. The new host should change things up nicely imo and no doubt she will sing!

Very happy with the 4 best actresses in a musical. A bit disappointed in the supporting actor and actresses in a play/musical categories though.

The main awards are surely going to ''To Kill a Mockingbird'', ''A Streetcar Named Desire'', ''Standing at the Sky's Edge'' and ''Oklahoma!''. They really really loved these shows and gave little to no love to the other nominees.
I mean, ''Prima Facie'' overperformance and ''The Band's Visit'' got a nice haul of noms, but I don't see both beating ''Mockingbird'' and ''Standing''.
I have no idea who wins Actor in a Musical, but Kate is winning Actress, right?
Poor Emma Corrin, thought that for sure she would get a nom. Comer is unbeatable.
Actor in a Play is Mescal's to lose or any of the other nominees has a chance?

JERUSALEM was/is magnificent but, like CONSTELLATIONS last year, shouldn't have been eligible. It's a reprise of a pre-existing production - same set/star/director etc - rather than a reconsideration of it, the way a proper revival would be. I'm rooting for GOOD or STREETCAR. Too bad no room for Jamie Lloyd's thrilling if contoversial SEAGULL.
Very surprised no noms either for the amazing Lynette Linton for director (she won the Standard Award in this category in December), or the incomparable Patrick Vaill, another Standard winner, but then PV didn't get a Tony nomination either for his stunning Jud Fry in OKLAHOMA! on Bway so he must be used to being overlooked. He was streets ahead of Arthur Darvill, Marisha Wallace, and Liza Sadovy in that production. Though Sadovy's win last year for CABARET was and remains entirely deserved.
Sigh.

A nice mix of nominees I would say. I'm also very surprised no Patrick Vail for Oklahoma and I'm also surprised no The Unfriend nominations and only one for Phaedra.
Aside I have to say I found Amber Davis very annoying reading the nominees as she kept bobbing around, come on get some proper presenters!

The Outstanding Achievement in Opera nominations baffle me. How can you reasonably compare a singer, a director & a designer?
I bet the ROH Peter Grimes will win Best New Opera Production. I was booked for it then returned my ticket, after reading the first night reviews & seeing the production pics. I have form with Peter Grimes & the Oliviers: I walked out of ENO's 2009 production after the first act because I loathed it only for that to win the Olivier. So I'll probably totally disagree with the Oliviers for two Grimeses running!

Good year for Sadler's Wells (inc. vs. ROH); 50% of 'Best new dance production'* noms, and 75% of 'Outstanding achievement in dance' noms. * surprised in a good way to see Traplord nom'ed - afair it was only on for 3-4 performances (in an underground car park). In Affiliates, the Bush got 2 of 5: deserved recognition! Streetcar in for all the big awards; Frecknall, Mescal, Ferran, Vasan (plus Revival cat). I'd give it three of those .. Lastly, no mention for Mark Rylance. |

Mark Rylance has already won an Olivier for the same role in the exact same production remounted last year. It's not even like Ian McKellen being nominated for two different productions of Lear directed by two different people.

Mark Rylance and Jerusalem should absolutely not have been nominated. It’s a revival yes- but if exactly the same production and performance than won Oliviers last time.
It was insulting that the Mary Poppins revival won awards for the same categories as first time round.

I mean there's the fundamental problem that the Oliviers make the rules along the way so you end up with stupid decisions (eg putting the orchestrator of a jukebox musical in the same category of a composer who wrote a score). Jerusalem was indeed eligible but probably the majority of the voters thought there was no point in rewarding something that, as good as it was, it's more of a remount than a revival. |

Best New Play: Prima Facie at Harold Pinter Theatre
Best New Musical: The Band’s Visit at Donmar Warehouse
Best Musical Revival: I loved Oklahoma and South Pacific equally, but for different reasons. South Pacific because it was a glorious, traditional revival with some of the best singing I have heard in a long time on the musical theatre stage. Oklahoma for doing something radically different with the piece, mining the text for new meaning. I thought I would hate it, but didn't. Overall, I would say Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! at Young Vic.
Best Actress: Jodie Comer for Prima Facie at Harold Pinter Theatre (already has it in the bag!)
Best Actor in a Musical: Julian Ovenden for South Pacific at Sadler’s Wells (just stunning! I still think about that opt up at the end of 'This Nearly Was Mine').
Best Actress in a Musical: Miri Mesika for The Band’s Visit at Donmar Warehouse

Really wish they would seperate new score or new orchestrations. There is a huge difference between what goes into creating both of them and it would seem to be unequally balanced. I have no idea how Totoro got this nom over any new musical, but specifically Tammy Faye. Has the best new musical ever been won by a production that wasnt nominated in anything other than performance?
