Just look at the uproar at the Brit Awards and their move to a genderless Best Artist leading to an all male shortlist. Given the way world drama over the centuries is biased towards male characters, it would be very possible to see all male shortlists for some acting awards. I would not like to see a reduction in the number of awards being available as that is likely to disadvantage female actors more than their male counterparts. So perhaps adding in a third category for acting is the only fair way forward. But we probably are some way off having enough trans/NB roles/actors for there to be sufficient competition. That may well change and could be unfair until the balance shifts but we shouldn't sacrifice female actors in the meantime. Edit:. Ok. The WoS awards didn't erase women as winners. But they are not typical awards. The fanbase voting delivered some undeserved nominations and winners. But I stand by the need to retain separate categories so as to protect representation. just because you don't agree with the winners doesn't mean the WOSAwards didn't prove that gender neutral is at least feasible. if anything when a publicly voted awards – that doesn't have a panel overseeing the shortlist – manages to skew towards women, it proves that there's no erasure?

I want to see acting celebrated. That means acknowledging the best of the best each season.
The number of gender neutral roles and performers is currently tiny.
To do away with gendered awards at this point would reduce the opportunity for actors to win recognition from 4 categories to 2. That is not something I can support or welcome. It is a disproportionate response.
The recent Brit Awards shows the risks involved in doing that.
So let's add more categories even if the non gendered categories are small in terms of nominees and may not get awarded each year for a while.
But let us celebrate the majority as well as the minority.

Nothing from Orange Tree is on the list which is a bit odd as they are listed as paid up and eligible.

Oh. I thought Medea snuck in just in time to be eligible but it's missing from the list. I guess that means Sophie Okonedo is gonna win next year for Best Actress! (And likely against Sheridan Smith, should Shirley Valentine become a hit) They better have an NT Live/NT at Home treatment or even a Broadway transfer to sustain a longer life. Also, I’m surprised that both Jerusalem and Small Island are still eligible, even if the concept or the production values of the shows were the same as the original iteration. So if the cast is different (like in Small Island and the supporting roles in Jerusalem), it’s considered good enough as a revival?

With the nominations less than a week away, I figured I'd make some final predictions for who I believe the nominees will be. Here they are:
Best New Play 1. To Kill a Mockingbird 2. My Neighbour Totoro 3. Prime Facie 4. Patriots
Possibilities: The Father and the Assassin / Mad House
Best New Musical 1. Tammy Faye 2. The Band’s Visit 3. Standing at the Sky’s Edge 4. Newsies
Possibilities: Sylvia / Bonnie and Clyde
Best Revival 1. A Streetcar Named Desire 2. Jerusalem 3. The Corn is Green 4. The Seagull
Possibilities: Jitney / Cock
Best Revival of a Musical 1. Oklahoma! 2. South Pacific 3. My Fair Lady
Possibilities: Legally Blonde / Sister Act
Speaking personally, my favourites of this season were Oklahoma, South Pacific, and To Kill a Mockingbird. I was also a big fan of My Fair Lady, though I saw that during its original run on Broadway. The acting categories are so hard to predict, but it would be wonderful to see Marisha Wallace (Oklahoma) and Julian Ovenden (South Pacific) recognised in the musical categories, as well as Rafe Spall (To Kill a Mockingbird) and Patsy Ferran (A Streetcar Named Desire) in the play categories. Just five more days to wait until we find out!

I'm assuming My Son's A Queer will be nominated for Best Comedy/Entertainment, and given the raves I've heard about it I think it probably has a good chance to win (I've not seen it myself though)

I would be totally thrilled if Allegiance won achievement in affiliate theatre. I think Mockingbird for best Play Best Musical is a tricky one, I’d love for Standing at the Sky’s Edge or Tammy Faye to win.

I would hope that The Bands Visit, Newsies and Tammy Faye are definite contenders for Best New Musical, as to who will get the other 1 or 2 slots is a choice of another 2 or 3. I'd be surprised if 101, Hex, Mandela or even Bonnie and Clylde got a nomination. Mind you, If Back To The Future can win Best New Musical, there's hope for all of them.

It’s time for a Casting category - one for Musicals, one for Plays. The BAFTAs recently started awarding Best Casting for Film and Television divisions, it’s a must the Oliviers recognize this need as well.

Do the best musical nominees usually perform at the awards, like at the Tony’s?
