That word has become such a cliché as to become meaningless. They bumped up Alex's age by 2 years in the last London revival at the Chocolate Factory, though I didn't really get what that added. It's a beautiful score save for the instances of Love Changes Everything. Which is unwelcome each time it appears and sticks out like a sore thumb. But that was ALW caving to commercialism at the time... I'll definitely go and see this, although I suspect the issues that put some off the show won't be resolved. It did have another London revival after the Menier at Southwark Playhouse but I don't remember what they did change wise. I just know I didn't like it that much. I never saw the original production but did enjoy it at the Menier. You're right - I didn't bother to go and see that one as it was too soon after the Menier one for me. I had issues with the Menier one; I felt some of the changes created more problems than they resolved (and it felt a bit cheap), but Michael Arden was lovely in it. I know the original one is frequently criticised as overblown but I rather liked Björnson's designs. And the original orchestrations are gorgeous.

the very adult bohemian bed hopping might not go over with the general public. But at least in that aspect the show (and original book) were way ahead of their time in that they showed two liberated self-determined women who took lovers like they wanted and weren't the whiny "I need a man to rescue me and cling to" pseudo-heroines so many shows of that period favoured. This is true...BUT, even though it does derive from the novella, the 'She'd Be Far Better Off With You' song always seemed rather misogynistic as the characters give Rose no say in the matter. But maybe the point of it is that both Alex and George are misogynistic.

Even without the misogynistic aspect most of the characters are still awful. Which is a major turn off to a lot of people. Stop trying to make them nice just make them interesting.

As much as I like Michael Ball, I'm just not keen on Aspects. I read the original book years ago & the characters are so unlikeable.

I never saw the original production but did enjoy it at the Menier. That was the Hope Mill production where the band consisted of a lone pianist. Think it was 2 pianos and a perc at Hope Mill. The performance I saw was late going up as the 2nd pianist wasn't there on time.

Are we assuming that Friday 12th May will be the press night? I would imagine it will be the 25th May, as currently off-sale. 12th May looks to be the first preview.

Doesn’t necessarily mean present day. Les Mis and Phantom were ‘reimagined for the 21st century’ too.

Set at a party conference. A young Conservative is struck by the presence of a terrible orator and a whirlwind train wreck of events then unfolds

I really hope they don’t make changes for change sake, gender flipping for instance, without actually touching on any of the issues with the book. It needs a root and branch rewrite, not cosmetic “21st century” changes to casting for Twitter likes.
I’ve seen the show twice, the inexcusable tour with David Essex and the fairly recent production at the Southwark Playhouse.
As others have said, the characters are ghastly but there is some nice music in there.

The prices are high enough to make me question going, and the 'reimagined' part...yeah, I'll need to know what they mean by that before buying a ticket. Not interested in gender flipped roles or a modern version, Michael Ball or not.
