If you look you can see the gangways on the walls so think the cast will surround you. I guess they'll always be degrees of immersion, not everything that is immersive is punchdrunk. The cast of Matilda appear in the boxes and the aisles, there are lasers above your head and confetti falls into the audience. It doesn't make it "immersive theatre".

Surrounding the audience. So ‘immersive’ is going to be taken very literally.

I appreciate the image, it does help, but I really dislike this kind of staging. Ends up with no 'good seats' because at some point, someone's back is always to you. I just want to choose a seat with the best view in the place and always be in the direction people are performing to.

Thats right, let's knock the show before it's even started or,in fact, before tickets even go on sale.

I'm not knocking it - I can't wait to see it!
Just don't advertise it as something it isnt...

But that’s just it. We don’t know yet so why judge it all? For all we know we’ll get ink squirted at us, be made to lug piles of ‘papes’ around and get ‘insert newly graduated arts ed student’ swinging around our heads. Surely needing something to be in a traditional end on proscenium arch format to be able to process it is the least creative, inventive and interactive thing that they could do here? It might be sh*t, but then again it might not.

Producers do throw around buzzwords sometimes. The new production of Phantom at Her Majesty's Theatre was said to be "immersive", which of course it absolutely wasn't. I take everything with a grain of salt. Never seen this show, or the film, so I'll be going 👍

Immersive is the current buzzword for pretty much all forms of entertainment at the moment from theatres to theme parks.

It does kind of say that everything that has gone before has been pedestrian and un-involving doesn’t it? Do they think we weren’t immersed in the ‘Lion Kings’ majestic vistas from the Serengetti? Or Berts’ rooftop antics in ‘Mary Poppins’? Shrugged at the Delorean in BTTF?

Or Berts’ rooftop antics in ‘Mary Poppins’? Shrugged at the Delorean in BTTF? Exactly. Immersion is down to the quality of the piece, the willingness of the audience to have a good time plus that illusive "magic in the air" seeing a special show. Having someone enter through the audience and/or some audience interaction = "immersive theatre" in most PR copy. I'm looking forward to this regardless. A new show for me to tick off the list.

I'm getting rather sick of the amount of shows having to be 'different', whether it suits the show or not. I'd much rather have something done in a traditional theatre where you have a good chance of knowing whether you're going to get a decent view or not, and if that brings down the ire of the positivity police, then so be it.

Actor comes down stairs from the stage and exits through the stalls doors. “It’s immersive” squeal the marketing department as they reach for Twitter 🙄

I think a lot of it comes down to vision meeting reality. A creative team might *plan* for an immersive production right from the pitch and pre-production, but as the walls of time close in around them - plus a lack of original thought in many cases - actually shows end up being traditional with tacked-on elements.

Contesting this on the basis that I've seen plenty in the round that I'd consider much better than half the average junk presented through a pros.

Contesting this on the basis that I've seen plenty in the round that I'd consider much better than half the average junk presented through a pros. Contesting this because I've seen plenty of poorly blocked shows in which directors fail to account for the whole auditorium, with many seats simply being better than others in terms of view/experience, at the same price. Some traditional pros theatres are better than others (I can't stand The Adelphi, for example) but the shows are played front and centre, with everyone roughly having the same experience. There's "junk" in every genre, staging decision and venue. Being in-the-round just can have much more varying results than a traditional set up, and has badly let me down several times previously.

West Side Story at the Royal Exchange. Not only was it in the round but they performed some scenes on platforms at the level of the first gallery so the people sitting at the rear of the stage level seats couldn’t see it due to the overhang. Clanger? Or deliberate decision made that sacrificing the view of some was worth it for the sake of the artistic decision. The latter I expect.

Planning to book for this tomorrow when it goes on presale - I’ve watched a couple of videos on YouTube and it looks great.
Based on the seating plan info they’ve included in the emails, does anyone have any recommendations on where to sit / not to sit? I recall from a previous visit the Troubadour is a bit of a barn!

Hopefully the more ‘thrust’ nature of the seating will move everyone a bit closer to the action. Even if it is behind you.

Have you looked at stevejohnson678 post on the 8th June with a photo of the planned seating. Open the link up and there's a description of the advantages of each section Yes, thank you! They’ve included that in the email too so had seen it there. That’s probably as much info as we’ll have until it opens isn’t it, so will probably need to go by that.

BUMP !!
All poised for 10am, wondering if it will be a random place queueing system or a free for all ? Got my password ready as that sometimes helps. Hoping to get two for the preview Saturday matinee.

In theory I have a nice front seat in Brooklyn in my basket, card details in and waiting for it to be processed. In practice, I am less than confident as it's been sitting there for five minutes trying to process already.
