If someone had come out in '86 prior to Phantom's opening, saying they were going to fly the Phantom out into the audience during the show, people would have lauded that as laughable and inappropriate for the piece; and yet it's now one of the most missed elements of the show.
At the end of the day, this is Musical Theatre not Stanislavski; a slight suspension of belief is generally required with these kinda shows from the start.

I’m picturing a less literal idea of flying, more like ‘swinging’ out over the front few rows, and around the ‘structure’ if they are replicating the set idea off of Broadway. What did they do at The Paper Mill?

It was The Paper Mill production that went to Broadway, so they were the same, but this is in the round, so it cant have the same type of structures as that version. When I watched that production, the constantly moving structures just kept reminding me Martin Guerre at the Prince Edward.

I loved the set on Broadway - that one part at the end where the whole thing moves towards the audience is absolutely stunning in person. I was sitting toward the front of the mezz and couldn't have had a better seat. Got a backstage tour afterwards (which was fantastic) and the moving structure is the only bit I wasn't allowed on, for safety, which was fine of course but I did sort of want to climb it.  |

Yes and it’s amazing in the film version where you get the wide angle shot of it from the bottom of the stage!

i saw the show on broadway & watched the proshot in the cinema and i cannot for the life of me remember the set beyond some generic scaffolding.
it’s not a show that demands anything too specific in terms of production so i think something in the round sounds fine. i expect they’ll use the flying to just exaggerate the dancing - like some leaps that go further than usual & a pirouette that leads to take off etc.

Oh that's my fave bit of the show as well. Goosebumps. It's a shame we don't get the original version here but I'm sure that the new version will be good in it's own way also. I'm still excited to see it.

Maybe the ‘flying’ will assist in a bit of parkour around the tenements during the chase scenes?

Jac Yarrow was just on Instagram live and answering questions from people. He read out a question which was "are you going to do Newsies after Joseph" and he didn't answer!
Read into that what you will.

Be interesting to see what they mean by ‘immersive’
The layout of the theatre and newsboys cavorting through the aisles does not an immersive show make.
I’m hoping for a full on street fight with audience participation.

If you look you can see the gangways on the walls so think the cast will surround you. I guess they'll always be degrees of immersion, not everything that is immersive is punchdrunk.
