I thought they had cast Gemma with her long mane and we had to be size and animal neutral when she was on stage.

Bruiser as puppet seems the most logical explanation

Are you sure the Bruiser bit’s not an April Fool? If it is a joke he’s really committing to it because he’s posted multiple tweets about it.

Hope he’s not gonna be dressed up in a dog onesie! Puppet does make sense, they probably got a good deal from the people creating the dog puppets for the Dalmatians musical, 102 for the price of 101!

Can I get some advice on seating? I’m planning on seeing a matinee and I’ve only ever seen evening shows at Regent’s Park so just wondering what side it is best to sit on to avoid the worst of the sun (if possible!?). Thanks!

Is Isaac Hesketh trans as he is playing a role always played by a girl usually or is this just some sort of role reversal they have done to fit in with Courtney being a different take on the usual Elle?

Cheers that makes sense. So Isaac is happy to use any of those pronouns when described. I've seen some non binary people have he/them or she/them as their pronouns but Isaac's is a new one on me.
I've always tried to keep up with all the different definitions but when there are now numerous genders I get totally lost. I get to LGBT, understand non-binary but Queer now having a different meaning to the overarching or some would say offensive term ( I don't see it as offensive as it has been used for titles of events like Queerfest) and with it becoming LGBTQI it takes a while for me in my early 50's to get my head around let alone older people.

Omghey! What do you people think of bruiser now being Elle’s male gay friend ? Is it right a poor dog has lost out on a role to a human actor ? Or is it a good opportunity for an actor to gain a part and have the chance to create a new iconic role for the show. Thoughts??! X x x

I don’t get why they’ve gone for humans playing the dogs when they’ve always had real dogs in the past. Surely they’d be even more comfortable on stage in an open air environment, and it’s much easier to take them for a “loo break” at the interval as well! Also hiring 2 dogs would surely be cheaper than 2 human actors, but then I guess it will just be ensemble members doubling up.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say ‘Queer’ now has a different meaning, it’s the way that it’s been appropriated in today’s LGBT culture. Some gay men are still offended deeply by the word, mainly due to it being used as a metaphorical stick to beat them with for many a year. I’ll hasten to add that I don’t fall into this category, however I am often dubious as to how casually people adopt the word to describe themselves (instead of perhaps ‘bisexual’) and think it may have now taken on an element of social status significance, particularly amongst younger adults. I’d like to also to add, I’m completely fine with humans playing animals to keep costs down. Unless they’re doing it just to win an Olivier.

Someone should have a word with Meryl Streep. This is some seriously impressive makeup -

Wasn't she in Animal Farm - Meryl the Sheep?
Didn't a Chameleon play Jessie Buckley in Cabaret as she couldn't be seen on stage most nights?
Queer in LGBTQ stands for Queer (Questioning) rather than the older catch all term Queer sometimes used to describe Gay people in less tolerant times. I think Queerfest comes from the later but I can understand why it might be termed with more derogatory words used in the past and what it implies. I was trying to think of a word which had similar meaning that I could put here which would be acceptable and the only one I could think of was Queen which is used in many LGBT ways and I would personally clas the same as say Diva in that context.
LGBTQIA - lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, (questioning), intersex, asexual, and (agender) I certainly understand the first 4, the 5th one in somee context, I'd assume one would cover non-binary and asexual was used to describe the likes of Kenneth Williams, Larry Grayson when looking at their lives post their passings. Still trying to get my head around it but finding it safer to stop at T.

Well, not offended as such because very few things offend me. I don’t like it though, because I’m from a generation where being called “a queer” was a vicious and deliberate accusation that you weren’t normal. When a bunch of straight lads have called you a dirty f***ing queer in front of everyone at the school disco and everyone has looked at you and laughed, it’s hard to see it any other way. Totally appreciate that nobody cares about this though.

I think the move to use queer nowadays also came from the idea of "taking it back". i.e. If the community takes the word back for themselves to use, those outside the community lose their power to use it negatively. So if the word being used to insult someone is instead used as a positive, it loses the effect.
