Hi all Lurker who had to post . So I’m the target for this show bar being old enough to be their parents. We go to OAT every year full family day out, three generations. We were very disappointed by what was said. Growing up Queer in eighties was terrible I don’t know what this generation would have done then. Anyway emailed to say I was unhappy as I had bought tickets for the whole family and it was clear some of my family who were accepting of me were not welcome. They said it was outside work comments but they would comp tickets for 101 Dalmatians. That was nice but unnecessary and I didn’t accept. I know it’s corny but when they go low we go high is a lesson this upcoming generation should learn, it’s what we did growing up at much rougher time for the community. I had the same email in response to my complaint from a Mr. Gavin; "Thank you for your email, and I am sorry that the comments posted by a member of our company online caused upset. Whilst they posted on their own personal channels, please be assured that we are dealing with this. These personal views are not the views of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and we welcome everyone to our theatre. It is incredibly disappointing that you now feel that this is not a place for you. Whilst you may still feel that you do not wish to see Legally Blonde, I would be pleased to offer you 3 complimentary tickets for you, your partner and mother to see our next production 101 Dalmatians, in the hope that we may win back your confidence. Do let me know if you would like to attend and I will arrange the tickets personally." I will happily pay, so I won't take him up on the comps. I complained on principle, not for something in return.

There is a thin line isn’t there between expressing your views and just going that little bit too far in terms of the actual production that you are in. Today I have seen two posts by two young members of a very well established show. I won’t go in to detail, but I did wince when I read them. Speaking as one who is often reluctant to post anything on Socisl Media, lest I inadvertently say something wrong, I do think the younger generation should perhaps confine their comments to their more private accounts.

That we won't know. Unless Isaac is sacked.
Internal disciplinary actions tend never to be made public for good reasons

I think it’s time for cast members to stop commenting on social media about the show they are in and their employers. Positive or negative.

The need for attention is outweighing common sense. I would extend that to all shows. Tell us you had a costume fitted, fine. Tell us what you think about the creative decisions? Nope. Not interested in cast members thoughts on production.

Isaac is costing them money and goodwill A lesson for both sides Isaac isn’t costing them money. People going on a witch-hunt over a, stupid and ill advised, tweet is costing them money. Then tweeting about getting comped tickets and tagging Isaac just to antagonise them in order to continue the witch-hunt with whatever stupid and ill advised tweet Isaac will likely reply with is grotesque.

At the root of all of what you said is an intolerance on the part of Isaac Hesketh. Without those tweets, none of this would have happened. The fault is very clearly with the creator of those texts and no one else.

I don’t think it’s a witch hunt if they deny what was originally said yet continue to double down. Think a friend should log out of their account for them. m

Uggh this isn’t good. Isaac needs to grow up and wisen up. I’d actively avoid them in a show after all this immaturity and entitlement.

And where are you seeing that they’re denying it? Their ‘original tweet’ didn’t ‘definitely’ refer just to the ‘nasty old white people’ making horrible remarks (and apparently it’s not just QL who has made similar remarks in reviews if you read the thread) The ‘original tweet’ pretty much took a whole section of the population and rendered them not welcome at OAT according to IH who was ‘speaking for the cast’. I think at this point I would just apologise for a badly worded tweet rather than carrying it on and taking the fact the other person in the Twitter thread is gay and therefore IH comments that they’re doing the show for ‘queer folk’ is ok.

It's disappointing to hear that the production chose diversity for the sake of diversity over talent.
I am all for diversity and I am more than happy to see it permeate every inch of the show. However, if you're incapable of performing the role well (and causing a riot on socials), you probably shouldn't have been cast in the first place.
Delighted to hear that people are enjoying Elle and Emmett!

And why ‘nasty old white people’? What has age and race to do with writing an unacceptable review? Surely just ‘nasty people’ would do the trick without labels?

That isn’t them denying it. It’s obvious what their tweet referred to, I understood what they were saying and who specially it was targeted at but still cringed at how badly it was worded. And don’t be so naive, even if Isaac apologised it wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference. There’s more outrage at Isaac’s outrage rather than the article that started this whole fiasco. Everyone has already forgotten the absolute vile, hateful, bigoted words that were written in the name of a “review”.

What about the "absolute vile, hateful, bigoted words that were written in the name of a "riposte".
I am not fan of Quentin Letts.
Heard of him, though.
I am sure you will join me in condemning the hate speech from Isaac Hesketh, and agree his position in theatre is untenable. With a frank, full apology for his disgusting hate -filled words, I would happily welcome him back into the theatre community in the decades to come. When they're sensible enough to manage it as a grown up, of course.

Thing is he used race as a weapon, exactly the type of thing we as society should be moving away from. It wouldn't be accepted against another race, he also use ageism as a weapon.
He has also give Letts the power and attention he wants while alienating those that were on Isaacs side.
It's a massive fail all round.
People need to learn that words and phrasing matter or we are never going to advance. It just becomes a war of words like the playground. There are sexist, bigoted and ignorant people across all races and age groups. Call out those attitudes without targeting people's race, age etc.

The original tweet talked about not caring what 'old cis white people think' or something very similar to that.
No reference to Letts or what was written
Isaac dismissed a vast swathe of the theatre going public
And that is unacceptable

Was thinking this production. Is disgusting really in this day and age that they had a stage without wheelchair accessible entrances, a very abelist production. So it seems that it's only inclusive if the powers that be, deem you worthy. Obviously the director only had able bodied friends at university. How are disabled patrons going to feel represented at this production if they can't see themselves onstage?
