Hi all Lurker who had to post . So I’m the target for this show bar being old enough to be their parents. We go to OAT every year full family day out, three generations. We were very disappointed by what was said. Growing up Queer in eighties was terrible I don’t know what this generation would have done then. Anyway emailed to say I was unhappy as I had bought tickets for the whole family and it was clear some of my family who were accepting of me were not welcome. They said it was outside work comments but they would comp tickets for 101 Dalmatians. That was nice but unnecessary and I didn’t accept. I know it’s corny but when they go low we go high is a lesson this upcoming generation should learn, it’s what we did growing up at much rougher time for the community. I had the same email in response to my complaint from a Mr. Gavin; "Thank you for your email, and I am sorry that the comments posted by a member of our company online caused upset. Whilst they posted on their own personal channels, please be assured that we are dealing with this. These personal views are not the views of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and we welcome everyone to our theatre. It is incredibly disappointing that you now feel that this is not a place for you. Whilst you may still feel that you do not wish to see Legally Blonde, I would be pleased to offer you 3 complimentary tickets for you, your partner and mother to see our next production 101 Dalmatians, in the hope that we may win back your confidence. Do let me know if you would like to attend and I will arrange the tickets personally." I will happily pay, so I won't take him up on the comps. I complained on principle, not for something in return. Just want people to see this.

What about the "absolute vile, hateful, bigoted words that were written in the name of a "riposte". I am not fan of Quentin Letts. Heard of him, though. I am sure you will join me in condemning the hate speech from Isaac Hesketh, and agree his position in theatre is untenable. With a frank, full apology for his disgusting hate -filled words, I would happily welcome him back into the theatre community in the decades to come. When they're sensible enough to manage it as a grown up, of course. “hate speech” Jesus. Get a grip.

Social Media has thought this generation split thinking, you're with us or you're against us. Once they decide someone is against them it's not enough that they disagree, have different world views etc no it has to be hatred and some ism or phobia. Social media has given people a platform to say I am better than you.
These kids think that homophobia and misogyny can be eradicated and it can't. People will always pick on people because they are different from the beginning of time to the animal kingdom this happens.
We can legislate all we want that people can't say things but we cannot stop them thinking it. And honestly growing up queer in the 80's I want to know who my enemies are I don't want them to suppress it because then it'll boil over into violence.

The only person winning here is the reviewer who is currently sitting pissing himself laughing because he achieved exactly what he wanted in the first place.

Just an ability to see their comments published publicly on Twitter.

As far as I can see, some douche wrote a review knowing full well the reaction he would get and has achieved that reaction. Wasn’t everyone going on about how thin skinned the younger generation is a few pages back and yet now they’re all supposedly as ‘hurt’ as they are over a few words they didn't have to read?

But just as readers of the original review are allowed to call out QL for his comments I can see why it’s fair game for readers of IH Twitter to do the same. They lost the argument when they resorted to prejudice of their own. Why is calling someone fat (QL) and old (IH) any different when used as an insult? Why does IH bring race into it? One reviewer upset them. Why bring others into it? Say you’re upset. Be specific. Complain to the relevant newspaper for abuse of power. Don’t belittle audience members who are a similar demographic who’ve come to see your show. It’s not good publicity for the show and undoes any initial support they may have had about the original review. It was also embarrassing timing in light of the statement OAT put out

You clearly haven't spent any time looking at a Daily Mail comments section if you think this thread is anywhere close to one of those. Thus far it has been a discussion about the idea that intolerance is unacceptable whoever it comes from. A discussion about how the choice of words matters and that they can often come with unintended and negative consequences. There is frustration here and on other threads that certain theatre performers don't understand how to use social media in a constructive way. It is worth noting that the venue is taking flak for what IH wrote. And they have acknowledged that they are taking action.

Exactly Everyone is capable of insensitivity or prejudice ‘old white cis’ people and so it appears young, non binary trans people. Being on the wrong side of prejudice doesn’t make you immune of practising it yourself. Legally Blonde is a show about inclusivity, not judging a book by its cover and love for yourself and others. Casting diversely should be celebrated and not used as an excuse to exclude others. I would dismiss as silly comments but IH seems to truly believe they are there for ‘marginalised groups’ alone. Only last night he commented this. So clearly a slap on the wrist from the OAT is not going to change their mind

A lot of that sort of thinking comes from the idea that just because someone is LGBT+, they should automatically and unquestioningly support another member of those communities.
I can't and won't subscribe to that sort of groupthink mentality.
I judge each issue and situation based on the facts and circumstances.
It is not healthy to demand uniformity of thinking.
Diversity is about acknowledging and celebrating difference not insisting that everyone is the same.
Inclusion is about respecting differences and finding ways to coexist happily and respectfully with those with whom you agree and disagree.

It was also embarrassing timing in light of the statement OAT put out When you log onto the internet you are placing your little silver car on the 'Go' square and joining the game. Where and how you choose to play are completely up to you. Usually we all log into our safe spaces and life is beautiful...until some outside force invades and disturbs our peace. Instead of reacting to 'words on a screen' people should first look at the intention behind those words. The intention of the original review was to wind people up...it was not even a review, it was a hit piece...and it succeeded in its intention. Someone takes the bait (Isaac) and stupidly replies 'in his feelings' and creates the exact sh*t storm that the instigator was hoping to for. Now you have people who used to be on the same side, battling it out in a new battle for supremacy of who is more butthurt...and for what other than to amuse the person who wrote the original review who is getting exactly what he wanted? The moral of the story is...if you read something and it annoys you, close your internet browsers and go for a walk. Come back when you are 'out of your feelings' and reply like an adult instead of a hungry lion. People need to stop being manipulated so easily, especially on a platform that is infested by people whose only aim in life is to make others as miserable as humanly possible.

In this case the person throwing stones just happened to be a white, cis, older gentleman. I highly doubt Isaac meant what y'all are accusing him of when he gave this person exactly what they'd hoped for. Although based on the reviews in this thread maybe he actually isn't joking as it doesn't sound like this particular production is designed to entertain older, cis, white gentleman or anybody for that matter. Of course it's hypocrisy...welcome to the culture wars.

I am an elder of the community Isaac is part of. I had paid to see this production with my queer family and my parents and grandparents. I do not subscribe to the Times or any publication because I can make up my own mind on things and the news today is crowded by lazy columnists. I wrote to the OAT to say I wasn’t using my tickets and I would give them to someone else. It was a nice email, I wasn’t rude and I refused any compensation or goodwill gesture. I thought at my age I’d have things a bit easier but these kids who didn’t grow up with the trauma of AIDS or S28 now have to create trauma making themselves victims of the big bad white cis Hetero nasty words. Letts wrote an inflammatory piece but he identified as a ‘fattie’ despite me hating that word he can identify as that. It’s very English and of a certain age. And for a show about body positivity I believe the crux of the anger is that Letts used that word and identified himself as part of the group. I’ve paid for a service and i have every right to complain when my family who have been nothing but accepting of me and my partner and child are targeted by the service provider. That’s not being thin skinned it’s taking a stand against the ridiculous divisivenesses that’s spilled over from social media into the real world.

Of course it's hypocrisy...welcome to the culture wars. I have no doubt Isaac meant every word. He very definitely thinks he’s been put on stage to reach out to his community. Whereas inclusivity is just that embracing and blending together with people from all communities. QL made some very valid points about the production. Some I agree with, some I don’t. As you said he just happened to be an older white cis gentleman - so what? His views on ‘fatties’ or whether Isaac can sing the role or not has absolutely nothing to do with his skin colour or what he does in bed. The casting may have been forward thinking but Isaac needs to recognise that not everyone will love him. But sometimes that has to do with the performance and not him personally. Some of the responsibility has to lie with the casting/director who should’ve ensured Isaac could’ve sung the role rather than a race to see who could cast the first trans Margot. Yes by all means cast whoever you like as Margot but expect criticism if the person chosen is not up to the task.

This is theatre not some drag bar they are performing in as their drag alter-ego. Bianca Del Rio they are not.

Maybe they did mean it, if so they are certainly paying the price for their stupidity. They are young (that is not a dig) and in the spotlight for a moment. I doubt they think very much beyond how many likes they are going to receive in the next 20 minutes. An apology at this late stage in the game is going to come across as slightly disingenuous no? Surely being not very good every night on stage is enough however to guarantee that we won't be seeing young Isaac much in the future and in their downtime they can rethink some of their life choices?

I see a regression in rights hard fought for and of course I don't blame Isaac for that but the current generation pick fights in my opinion to look good, to look down on others and I believe that in part is causing the backlash. I'm in London since I fled Ireland at 18. Not far from my homeplace two gay men were beheaded by an Islamist extremist they met on Grindr but the kids are fighting over radios playing Fairytale of New York. I just find priorities wrong and it's making me tired.

It is such a shame this has all happened and has taken the shine from some really positive things happening in this production.
For example, I love that Elle does not have to be your typical thin blonde. Really there is no reason why she has to be and we have seen 47284 tours where she was already. A new way of looking at things is most definitely welcome.

There is a reason why she is usually cast the same way, elle is very much a specific type, a blonde girl from the valley in California from a very specific social group. And they all have/had a certain look. But I'd also say Sheridan Smith was casting against the stereotype of Elle.

She was but then she is a "name" and if you are a "name" then all the usual casting barriers all fall down.

So IH has “made history” by being the first trans actor to play Margot in Legally Blonde (yeah, that’s gonna go down in the history books… which one is Margot?!?). But isn’t the point to share that with everyone? To show everyone why this is a good move? To show people who may not have expected it that there is no reason it shouldn’t happen?
Nope, he’s only there for the select few he wants. That’s really gonna make a difference 🙄

Really when Letts commented it was behind a pay wall and not many will have seen it.
Some theatre social media accounts put his words on social media, but in doing so brought them to a whole wider audience. Why do people do this?
Why can't people say I saw his words, I didn't agree. No, they want to draw more attention to them, and perhaps to themselves too. They post the offending text cause, cause a pile on, fan the flames and then step back and watch it all burn!
It is quite irresponsible behaviour really.
