I don't particularly like the pink.

Is it me or does Harry Hadden-Paton’s wig look a bit dodgy?

That dress looks like an amateur rip-off version. Surely they can do better than that?

Since Amara's in this, does that mean no Spring Awakening transfer?

Since Amara's in this, does that mean no Spring Awakening transfer? I think the transfer was cancelled/ delayed because a producer backed out. I think they may still proceed with it for 2023. Possibly with different actors.

Since Amara's in this, does that mean no Spring Awakening transfer? Also, the show is and has always been "outsider", even more so in this country. They'd just recast. Amara Okereke isn't a name. Right now, she's a young (and doing very well, with a great career ahead of her) jobbing actress. Nobody is going to be making productions around her any more than they would Gina Beck. SA isn't happening as the poster above rightly says, these things are always in flux and an investor didn't want to risk it. It'll be back in due course but for now, nothing is happening.

That dress looks like an amateur rip-off version. Surely they can do better than that? Not in the least bit concerned. This production has been free with the purse strings. I have zero doubts - from everything I'm hearing - about the quality of this show. I am extremely dubious and leery however of the business it has done. I booked early for this (something I rarely ever do) and already my seat has lost £30 in value. Todaytix for this one - at least it'll be cheap to go back for a second go.

Seen the promo, I hate the back-to-back posing like they are in a buddy movie.

Seen the promo, I hate the back-to-back posing like they are in a buddy movie. Total cringe and cliched isn’t it. The pink dress might have looked better if they hadn’t put it against a pink backdrop.

They might as well have done the thumbs up, 'look at this guy eh' pose.

I rather like a shaved headed Higgins, especially as the floppy wig is rather clumsy.

The dress is so ugly. Cecil Beaton's designs in the 1964 movie were AMAZING! Why didn't they just copy it? Also, why are they standing back to back like an early 2000s romcom?

It's in pretty good shape for a first preview and I had a really lovely time.
Amara is really wonderful in it and she's only going to grow more as it goes on. The Rain Is Spain was really moving as she 'got it' and then began to flourish. All of the same costumes from Broadway, and she looks beautiful in them all. I loved Harry HP on Broadway and I think I love him even more tonight. Really nuanced performance that again will grow as he gets used to the role again. Stephen K Amos is passable but that role can be a show stealer and I don't think he'll be doing that anytime soon. Audience went mad for Vanessa Redgrave, but she's very frail, using a crutch to walk about with, and she fluffed a few lines here and there.
It's just a beautifully designed production - a little masking at the sides, but a lovely sized house (that revolves in the same way it it did on Broadway - though it's not quite as big). Catherine Zuber has the Olivier in the bag for her costume design already - they're gorgeous.
And to hear that score played as it should be, with a proper sized orchestra, is an absolute treat.
4 stars for now, but it'll be 5 when they're in the swing. Can't wait to go back.

Saw it tonight and it definitely felt like a first preview, with some mishaps and especially with a sound design that needs to be fixed. Loads of sound issues at the beginning - part of the reason why the first three numbers didn't really land - mikes going on and off several times throughout the show and the orchestra often drowning the singing. On the whole it's a solid and handsome production, and will only get better with time. Harry HP shows his longer history with the show by delivering the most fully-rounded performance, but Amara Okereke follows him very closely and she'll be pitch-perfect by opening night.
Vanessa Redgrave is clearly very loved but no one will rank this among her best performances. Very good supporting cast with strong performances by Malcolm Sinclair (Higgings) & Maureen Beattie (Mrs Pearce), and Tom Ping had a juicy moment as Higgings' butler. I did like Stephen K. Amos and thought that the reason why I'm Getting Married in the Morning didn't quite work is because it was under-directed and lacked a vision - the reprise was much sharper and got a bigger round of applause. I don't know how one of the male leads was cast tho, he was consistently off-key and his song was clearly out of his range.
It is a long show - it ran for something like 190 minutes tonight - and it will get tighter during previews, although there are certain weaknesses in the book (and particularly act 2) that no director can really fix. The finale is the same they used on Broadway, which is not necessarily brilliant but still an improvement on the original. I thought the level of energy both in the cast and the audience tended to fluctuate, and the latter didn't seem really on board until "Just You Wait". Some of the songs got only polite applause, while others got a much warmer reception. It's a very enjoyable - if a little too long - evening, and I suspect that the reviews will be mostly 3 to 4 stars, rather than 4 to 5.

I saw this production on Broadway, and with a good Doolittle, this version of I'm Getting Married does land. Norbert Leo Butz was terrific, got the audience going and delivered a very funny and crowd pleasing number - K Amos doesn't appear to have the ease in it yet to be able to do that (whilst he's not be right for this production necessarily, it's the sort of number Robert Lindsay would turn into an absolute show stealer)

(and Sinclair plays Pickering, not Higgins as I miswrote in my previous post)

Presumably this cast have got the accents right?
Memories of Laura Benanti's dreadful attempt at both a cockney accent and an RP English one on Broadway are putting me off seeing this until I know this production doesn't have the same issue!
