On camera he has said he went to see his wife who had symptoms then went back to work. On. Camera. If he is still here by the end of the week there will be riots I reckon. Not that it makes much difference because the whole thing was rather unfortunate this afternoon but didn't he say she had sickness and a headache? So not the main symptoms of the virus. Not really the point though - she was ill, the virus had already been declared a pandemic and no-one was being consistent about what the symptoms were/are. Only an idiot in his position would have gone back into work in the most important office in the country. Also doesn't seem to tally with the timeline his wife mentioned they were battling the virus in her Specator article from what I recall. |

Initial Thoughts:
- At the time vomiting was considered a Covid-19 symptom, went to help his wife and then decided to go back to work, applying rules even if only worried about Covid-19 you must self-isolate.
- On 5 hour drive to Durham his child not need to use the toilet but on an hours drive to Barnard Castle he had to stop for a comfort break for his child.
- Testing your eyesight is not a valid exclusion to adhering to the guide lines.
- Always stating how important his role was, why did he not request an official Government car to drive him back to London whilst his wife and child continued to self-isolate in what had become their primary residence.
- Complained his father’s estate was not a nice place to be and was definitely not a better place than isolating in the centre of London.
- Complete lack of remorse and tried to spin I would have got away with it if it wasn’t for the pesky media doing their job (the only fake news was the articles he and his wife wrote)
Weaknesses
- Can his wife drive. Â Update: She can drive, oh dear!
- if they were worried about their location being known their articles didn’t need to mention it at all.
- Why not fess up straight away if they did no wrong and had to be forced into it.
- ......
The final insult was a throwaway statement replying to Peston’s question on why someone who had been told to isolate as part of the track and trace process would ignore it as it would mean them not being paid, he said that situation does’t apply to me and not thought about it.

Having watched the briefing tonight I am worried about the future of this Country for the first time ever. We are in the middle of the greatest pandemic for a 100 years and we are negotiating our way out of the EU and our Prime Minister thought the weaknesses Peston outlined were insignificant and didn’t require any comment.
The brightest minds in Government must have read and approved Cummings statement which is the weakest I have had the opportunity to hear from any Government. To mitigate one discretion they owned up to another two (returning to work from a should be isolating home / unnecessary trip to Barnard Castle)
These people are the ones our future relies on, as I said I am worried.

It's also worth noting that Cummings blamed the media for reporting it multiple times but at no point did he apologise.
The Government statement from the other night said they wouldn't respond to the second report about the day trips as it was inaccurate but Cummings confirmed most of it today.
The only really inaccurate media report has been his own wife's article.

I think the point for me is it was almost entirely constructed flannel but he just about go away with it. The main line of attack was cut off at the legs when we were told about additional child care givers; his sister and teenager nieces in a 3rd building we didn't know about. The nonsense trip to the castle became the chief weakness and whoever came up with the eyesight idea will presumably get an award in the New Years list; complete rubbish but nothing you can do. But for the old man who saw him and noted the number plate we wouldn't even have had that.
Where did that story about the family being visited by the police come from - The Guardian?
Unless there is something more to come, it's on with the show. |

londonpostie , sadly I believe you are right, will be interesting to see the way the papers go tonight as there is still a lot of disquiet. Only positive is that we understand why Dominic Cummings stays in the background and he will always be the butt of eyesight jokes for a long time to come and the shine will have hopefully been taken off of his mythical status.

The interesting about the new guidance is that gift shops and retail spaces in theatres, museums etc can reopen. That could be very useful for the likes of The National, Royal Court etc which have them as well as places like the BFI.

It’s not surprising that they think the public will swallow a load of obvious lies and that they can brazen this out with no consequences - that’s practically business as usual for this lot by now.
I find it disgusting but it seems many people are happy to be lied to and treated like a mug.

Have to laugh, a number of Police Forces tweeting that driving with impaired eyesight is an offence and going for a drive not the best way to determine eye health and using a test card is the preferred method.
How we laughed when Trump recommended drinking bleach and we would never be as stupid to advise an idiotic method to assess the impact of Covid-19 on your health.

It does remind me a little of the financial crisis writ small; a bunch of mostly posh boys taking the country for a bunch of mugs, basically ballsing it out and emerging without a scratch.
The thing I just don't understand is how not a single journalist asked him why his wife didn't drive (she can). Don't get that at all .. less none of them are 'different' enough thinkers.

Not sure I'm going to be rushing to places where who knows how many people have touched the items on the shelf It's no different to picking up anything in a supermarket or from a home delivery... There will always be some element of risk, but otherwise you have to rule out even food shopping until there's a vaccine so I don't see any need to treat non-food shopping any differently. It's all about appropriate precautions - wash the item/leave it in a bag for 72 hours, wash your hands, wear gloves if you feel it helps. |

I can sort of understand why he did some of it, but really the media here has a lot to answer to as it whips up public feeling in a very unsavoury way. One of the advisors I saw on tv said most journalist hate DC anyway so it is not going to be a very unbiased view. I have no great feeling on Dominic either way. I just wish some of the focus on the media could be on the real issues at the moment rather than on whether what one individual did. Lets be honest most of us know or have seen pictures of people who have broken the restrictions.
