Germans are very efficient and law-abiding. Also have yet to meet a person, who does not wear a mask for medical reasons.

Am due to go to Germany in Aug, can you tell me what the mask wearing etiquette is? Am assuming public transport and shops but not outdoors - eg in beer gardens. Would that be right? And restaurants - wear them till you get to your table and then take them off? Put them back on if you have to go to the loo? All insights gratefully received, I don't want to get it wrong!

Yes, pretty much. I’ve never had an indoor table since COVID but I think you can take it off as soon as you are sitting down. You don’t have to wear it outside. If you have to go inside to go to the loo or approach a member of staff you have to put it on again. Wearing a mask at shops, grocery stores and on public transport is mandatory. Most places have signs at the door to show you what to do. In most grocery stores you have to take a shopping cart or basket as well so they can control the maximum number of customers. In most cases sanitizers are provided to clean the handles. I remember the first day when masks became mandatory. I had to do some grocery shopping and they literally were turning people away at the doors if they didn’t bring a mask. A lot of people weren’t amused... Now it’s pretty normal. And if you do forget yours, they now will provide you with a paper mask. I tend to forget mine at the gas station or when I’m going to grab a quick ice cream downstairs. 🙈 But as there are plenty of masks around now that’s usually not a problem. Some places will have separate entrances and exits now so be aware of that too. It’s pretty well organised over here, I really have to admit that...

Thanks jess173 really helpful - seems straightforward and logical. I've got so many masks now that I keep one in every bag or pocket I'll conceivably use so I never forget them! Could I ask another question - is Germany still quite cash focused or has Covid made card payments more popular? I've always found that Germany tends to have a cash-first approach to payment, certainly in pubs, cafes, etc. Wondered whether I still need to think about having a decent amount of cash with me or just to keep topping up my Revolut card.

Is saying that Germans are very efficient now seen as racial stereotyping or is the real reason that they confirm so much they are worried about their names going on the list.

This has gotten A LOT better lately due to Corona. Of course it depends where you are going but in the big cities you will have no troubles going almost completely cashless now. I never carry more than 10 or 20€ in cash for when I need to get something from the bakery or a kebab or something like that. I almost always use Apple Pay or my contactless bank card if AP isn’t accepted.

jess173 Really appreciate it - always love going to Germany, seems like a place with a really good quality of life and sense of community. And excellent beer!

Here in the UK there has not been much of a decrease in cash usage going by how busy banks are and how big chains like Next dropped their card only policies due to it being unsustainable.

Almost everyone of the one or two customers allowed in a branch at the same time?

Every study shows that cash use has dropped massively during the pandemic! However I fully concede that the University of Man Walks Into A Bank should be taken equally seriously...

But do those surveys show if card usage has gone up or if simply people haven't spent the money.
Next thought it could go card only but enough potential customers walked away so they had to U-turn.

Rishi Sunak has proposed an online sales tax to get us back to the shops: Giving a new meaning to "your money or your life"! I'll be staying at home. I'd rather cough up money than the contents of pneumonia-infected lungs.

Family have decided - from next week, if we're all home we will eat out every single Monday-Wednesday in August. Lots of places round here we haven't tried before and it's too good to miss with the discounts. Plus as they say, doing our bit for the economy

I know you know that you have a heightened sense of vulnerability due to your OCD; it's not fair to imply that the rest of us are being reckless by doing normal reasonable things that are now extremely low risk given the low level of transmission of this virus.

In the beginning shops were stressing, that people should use cards if possible...now they are more relaxed about it. Restaurants normally allow cards, pubs sometimes. Rule is: the smaller the establishment, the more unlikely are cash payments. Bakeries etc. only accept cash, as we normally don't pay a few Euros by card. Museums, parks etc. sometimes want you to pay by card now, others don't even have that possibility. It varies. Not very helpful, I know. ;D When I'm in London I pay by cash only to avoid transaction fees with a foreign card. Not realistic to pay 3 pounds in Tesco with a card, fees would be much higher than that.

Anyone see Panorama report about the initial outbreak in China last night. Fairly damming?
