Is there anyone on here who works in an office? I ask because I’m dreading being forced to return as the thought of being tightly packed in an indoor environment with colleagues who I know won’t adhere to any guidelines is really causing me sleepless nights. I’ve continued to do my job for the past 16 weeks with no problems at all and can only see economic reasons for the Government to insist on returning now. There will be no health benefits. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I work in an office actually for a Govt Dept. But I've been WFH for the last 4 months and there will be no gradual return until end of August at earliest and that will be for staff who need to be on site for certain duties and for those who want to return to the office. There is no plan in my dept to force people back as we all have laptops and can WFH. Some do want to get back, others are quite happy being at home as it is easier and fits in better with their domestic arrangements. If you try to force people back then you have the issue about those with health conditions before you get into the age, race, gender, size factors of people and then you throw in those of their family, partners etc and travel time. So there could be a lot of obstacles. I think the Govt will look to encourage people back but not push their own staff too much as they have savings on stuff like energy bills immediately.

'Man Cock' said this morning that masks arent needed in offices. So I suspect next week BJ will overturn it. So we don't need to wear them in restaurants and cafes but what about Pret? Is it a shop of cafe? "Man Cock" made me laugh.

If you buy a reusable cloth mask to help reduce waste and find that the elastic ear loops are too loose then double over a small section of each loop and use a bit of tape to bind it up to make the loop shorter. Do not under any circumstances tie a knot in each loop to shorten it and then discover that the loops are now folding your ears over because you made them too small so you spend the next 27 minutes with a screwdriver and a magnifying glass trying to unpick the knots.

I would totally have watched this on TikTok.

Does that change your thinking Matthew? Just playing devil's advocate, isn't take away good sold in a shop? Talk about about mixed messaging

If we have to wear them in shops what about in schools. Would staff be expected to wear one?
The mask wearing objectors in America are mainly from the further right but what would they be in the UK. I can see the central moderates of both main parties wearing one and the Lib Dems when their MPs ride in two taxis maybe. But which will be the areas which don't wear them in the UK?
A lot of BAME people seem to be wearing them in Birmingham and also the a large number of younger white people. But I'd imagine it will be the younger ones who'd moan about not being allowed into a shop if they don't wear one.
The flare ups in Asian areas are also worrying. We know a lot of Asian people work in frontline jobs so may be more at risk before we factor in the potential ethnicity factors. Some Asian families do live in large groups but if they had been distancing and meeting up in the agreed bubbles. i don't see how it would spread more in that area than in other gatherings by other ethnicities. Maybe with the case numbers having come down this has always been there but is now a more visible factor.
If there are illegal sweatshops as has been suggested is one of the factors which caused the spike in Leicester. These need to be robustly shut down and any victims offered full support. There was an article on Daily Mail online about this which I thought was a typical Daily Mail type perspective but it was actually from a member of the Muslim council so was a balanced view on it.
Good to know that there will be an enquiry in the UK about this. We need to really look into our mortality figures as that is the major issue. The case numbers are fair compared to compatible European Countries. Lockdown was clearly between 3 and 9 days too late. Cheltenham was underway two weeks before lockdown and to have cancelled that mid event would have been very negative. But once that was over and the major football matches were pulled for weekend of 14th/15th March. I think that all shows should have closed on 14th or 15th. Did any shows actually run on 16th March. I know some concerts did - Louise and Stereophonics both did concerts on 16th I know.Even if schools had run to 20th March the more I think about it none essential places like pubs and clubs should have been closed by 16th March.

Does that change your thinking Matthew? No, because my point was nothing to do with government policy and everything to do with idiots attacking problems that don't exist. That hasn't changed. There never was any confusion here. If you're going to eat food then obviously you can't wear a mask. I doubt there's a single person who genuinely believed that if you bought food in a takeaway that also has an indoor eating area then you're expected to wear a mask at all times because it's a shop and then poke the food through your mask or something. It is blindingly obvious that it's OK to not wear a mask in those situations. Everybody knows that. But some people still pretend that it's confusing just so they can take a dig at the government, as if they think this wins them some sort of victory. I hate this government. I've never had a good word to say about Boris Johnson and if I said what I truly think of him I'd have to disable the profanity filter and then ban myself. It's been clear for years that there was no limit to the damage he was prepared to do to this country in order to get power and if he could figure out a way to be king as well as PM I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate to grab that job as well. And he's not even the worst of them. There are many legitimate reasons for criticising this government so it pisses me off something chronic when people just make stuff up, as if that means they're scoring points against the people in power. Truth is important to me, and it genuinely distresses me — by which I mean a complete ASD meltdown — when people disregard reality just to make a point.

Mass vaccinations I guess they can throw a lot of medical staff at it and do it in bulk. Ideally you can just go and queue and get it at your GP or local pop up centre. They only need to do visits to places like homes and maybe schools. No prioritising once the key frontline NHS and Care Workers are done.

American and German companies making good progress in finding vaccinations also. Hopefully months and not years now

Does anyone know of a site that has a map of recent cases only? There are loads of maps that show the total number of infections, but the number of active cases has fallen so much that those are basically just historical maps of how things were in April and May. I have recent figures and can make a table of the number of cases during the last week for each local authority, but that just has place names so it's difficult to visualise where the hot spots are.

It’s all over the place in France too. Regional variations, loads of non compliance, shops are allowed to make masks compulsory or recommended and it’s up to them which they choose. Cinemas are require masks to be worn in foyers and ticketing areas but not when you’re in your seat which seems entirely the wrong way round.

I expect a lot of the differences are down to ease of implementation. If someone takes their mask off while watching a film what are you going to do? Risk the anger of everyone who gets disturbed? What cinema worker gets paid enough for that?
In the end I don't think it matters all that much. The point is to keep the reproduction rate below one, not to hold it at the absolute lowest possible value. As long as most people are careful most of the time the restrictions will do the job they need to do.

If this turns out to be true when the boffins have checked it out, it would seem that the chances of coming across someone who is infected is very small. That’s not a reason for complacency of course, we know how things can start to get out of control again. But it does put some perspective around the current situ. The local breakdowns are usually on Gov.Uk or might be stuff on PHE website.
