I think it is ironic that Dominic Cummings basically stirred up people during Vote Leave to make it ok for people to voice populist hate against minorities......and now the mob have turned on him he doesn’t like it. He helped make our society a nastier place (in my opinion, I concede not everyone will agree) and now he doesn’t like the nastiness being directed at him.
He should go.
On a side note the Range Rover has automatic tracking (same model helped nail the Crossbow murderer in Anglesey despite the man destroying the car!...google it) so it should be quite easy to check if he’s telling the truth and if he did fill the car with petrol somewhere....It would also be ironic if the big brother data led to his downfall wouldn’t it....
More importantly where is our sensible track trace and isolate system and how do local lockdowns work if you are allowed to travel for childcare?

Of course he stopped for petrol, of course his wife went in to pay - with cash, of course they turned their phones off (tracking), of course the trip to the Barnard Castle area was a treat on his wife's birthday, of course he was unlucky the old guy recognised him and wrote down the car reg.
We know it's all bollox. What the fuss is about it what it says about 'their' contempt or us per se, and also the lack of respect and regard for the sacrifices everyone made. That is the point.
Fwiw, none of this attitude is new. It's the way of an entire class of people, and unless you have met and experienced that culture you would not believe the callousness. Look at Rees-Mogg's slip about the residents at Grenfell, he just let his guard down for a moment. What we are seeing from Cummings and Johnson is - briefly revealed - the heady cocktail of exposed privilege and entitlement, is all.

In my mind Cummings has wiped the cameras like all the nasty people do on those detective films and tv programmes

Radio 4’s The World At One reporting that the police are being told by the public that they are ignoring lockdown from now on because of DC’s actions...ten days from now we are facing a second spike unless people follow the rules.

Boris feels its a price worth paying to save Dominic Cummings career. He must be an incredibly good advisor. Shame he didn't offer advice on what to do when some cretinous dingbat creates a crisis in the government that could easily have been solved with an apology but was escalated into a PR disaster by dissembling and evasion.

Well said,The Matthew...a simple heartfelt apology would have helped considerably but instead this story is rumbling on and on

Good Radio 4 documentary tonight tracing back the origins of coronavirus in the UK. It puts the blame right on the government for not shutting down all the major sporting fixtures much much sooner. At the time the govt and it’s advisors did not consider them a close contact risk. Mad. Have they never been to a match. In particular Mapping now shows the huge impact of Cheltenham Gold Cup which still took place after the WHO declared a global pandemic and the Athletica Liverpool match that still went ahead as Spain went into lockdown and Madrid was even offering travelling supporters refunds on travel costs to the match. Interestingly Boris was also as the Twickenham rugby match along with other MPs the weekend before. The government knew the risks of these events and still didn’t shut them down. This certainly annoys me ( amongst other things ) but look at how the racing industry is asking for races to start - all about the money, the betting, the gambling. Not sport. They could easily run some athletics within a closed stadium. Easier than some other sports. But do people bet on them? Not so much. Cheltenham was a massive mistake and probably killed many people, older punters especially. As for the football. Wow, how they have stepped up as an industry to support us...sorry, irony doesn’t work well on t’internet.

Boris doubling down on his defence, he reckons an independent enquiry wouldn't be a good use of time.

This Liason Committee is glorious. The PM digging his own grave deeper and deeper with clear, consice questions and his usual blather in response making him.lok weaker by the second.

Is there a fridge handy he can hide in? This is the worst performance I've ever seen by a politician on television and that includes when one was replaced by a tub of lard on Have I Got News For You

Just so everyone knows, a journalist reading out facts on television and holding the Government to account equates to bias apparently.

'If you’re phoned up by a contact tracer and told to stay at home as you’ve had contact with an infected person, is staying at home compulsory or can people use their judgement, Clark asks.
Johnson says no, they will be asking people to stay at home. If people don’t follow that advice, financial sanctions will be considered.
You should self-isolate, he adds. If people don’t, we’ll consider fines.'
You couldn't make it up...

The govt now farcically lurching from one self-inflicted car-crash to the next. What next? Even the lead header on the NY Times is having a pop at BJ.
Numbers of deaths are up over 400 again for yesterday I have just read.
Local shut-downs on Covid hot-spots? Really? Are we going to have checkpoints on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border for example? Not enforceable.
On my walk today....zero distancing and huge groups out together including full scale football matches...crazy!

Numbers of deaths are up over 400 again for yesterday I have just read. The figures for the first day after the weekend are always high because reports get delayed over the weekend. It was 627 deaths at the start of the week a fortnight ago and 545 a week ago.

^Now Emily removed from the Newsnight anchor tonight...I have contacted the BBC for a reason...not expecting a response I did too. The idea that telling the truth about the Goverment is the same as bias needs nipping in the bud immediately.
