I liked it, but found the love story contrived and unbelievable. I did like Elite better and the TV version of Marie Dueñas' El Tiempo entre conturas, so there's quite a bit of good Spanish TV around! Oh yeah, I liked Elite! It's been a good couple of years for Spanish TV. Another good one is Vis A Vis (I guess Conjugal Visit would be a translation for that), which is kind of an adaptation of Orange Is the New Black, but much darker. I think it was on Walter Presents/Channel 4 in the UK as "Locked Up" but not over here in the cultural wastelands of Germany. I still want to try and get this somehow as I have a bit of a crush on Alba Flores who was in both "El Tiempo" and "La Casa" and is in this as well. |

Has anyone watched the Madeleine McCann documentary? I enjoy a good true crime documentary, but alas not all of 'em *are* good, and although loads of people seem to be watching this one, it's difficult to tell in this case if it is because it's good, or if it's just because it's a crime that's much closer to home than the American ones.

The Hustle. A woeful gender swap version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Anne Hathaway (what was she thinking?) and Rebel Wilson.
This doesn’t deserve to kiss the feet if the original DRS movie.
When is someone going to put a stop to Rebel Wilson? She’s consistently dreadful in everything.

Baby Ballroom. Documentary series about the children’s ballroom dancing competition scene. The sequins, the tans, the lack of boy dancers, the teachers, the moms (and dads). Fascinating I think it’s very encouraging to know that thousands of children in the uk are involved in this sort of fun, competitive activity (and I’m sure many more sporting activities like it) when all we hear in the news is about kids stabbing eachother.

When is someone going to put a stop to Rebel Wilson? She’s consistently dreadful in everything. I watched this last night and glad it was only 1hr 33m. Pretty rubbish wasnt it. First time I saw Rebel Wilson she was a novelty now after seeing her in a few things i realise that she can only play Rebel Wilson so it's getting a bit monotonous now. |

If anyone is still feeling festive there’s a wonderful animated film called Klaus on Netflix. It’s nominated for Best Animated Film at the Oscars and the Baftas (well deserved too).

Probably last to join the bandwagon but just finishished bingeing all 5 series of Schitt’s Creek - so freaking good! Funny, quirky, sincere and heartfelt!
Also watched the 1st 2 series of The Crown which I also loved, but am struggling more with s3 and all the cast changes. Seems to have lost a bit of its glitz, although Olivia Colman’s Queen is probably a more realistic depiction. Love Helena Bonham Carter but feel she’s super miscast as Margaret. The Aberfan episode was heartbreaking 💔
Also started watching The Irishman but it just feels like a Goodfellas remake!
Also thought Marriage Story was pretty zzzzzz if well acted.

I actually enjoyed The Hustle, but I got what I wanted from it. A mindless easy watch before bed. It had its moments and thought the cast were good. I did wonder if US audiences would have 'got' Hannah Waddinghams Essex girls though.
I also think a more serious approach on the story could be interesting
agree, Klaus I'd brilliant and should win the oscar. So nice to see 2d animation back

I have grown up with and absolutely love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (my parents saw it on their first date), and enjoyed reliving the story, however I didn't appreciate a lot of the changes they made and don't generally enjoy Rebel Wilson. Given the choice I would definitely watch DRS, but I would watch this again. Interestingly I found out that DRS is itself a remake, though I haven't managed to watch the original "Bedtime Story" yet. |

Yes, it's ok - if you like Grant Morrison-type comics it's very much in that vein, though tbh I've forgotten the plot already! I think Uncut Gems is out on Netflix tomorrow - my Twitter timeline has been raving about it for weeks so I'm curious. |

Recently finished a series called 'Soundtrack' and I loved every minute.
Instead of breaking into song, the break into song but mime to it instead. The first 2/3 episodes take their time, and you have to keep going with the concept, but I was hooked by the end! The story is great, with fleshed out characters, going through a tough time. I even cried by the end, one song moved me so much! I was nearly turning off after the first episode, but I'm glad I kept going. Hope they get a second season!
There's a real mix of music; Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Joni Mitchell, Lily Allen, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, The Weekend just to name a few.
Robbie Fairchild (An American in Paris) also stars as Troy.
I was going to link the trailer but 1) the trailer is terrible 2) it tells you loads of the plot, which is very annoying!

I just got Amazon Prime to watch Picard, and watched the Andy Murray doc last night too.
Anyone got any suggestion for good films to watch on Prime? I've seen Booksmart.
I don't need more TV in my like (too much TV, not enough time) but I want to make sure I use it between episodes of Picard, since they're dropping one a week.

Found that fashion next prog, thanks BB - not bad but not enough analysis of the garments. Might improve as they chuck out the contestants. Is it a US prog cos loads of Brits in it, fronting it etc. And if anyone like a buddy tec series try New Blood very right on and good plots as you would expect from the writer Horowitz of Foyle’s War. It is as if they asked him to write something for a more metro generation but not altogether woke. (Woke? Do I mean that?) Those both Netflix.

Two great shows, BoJack Horseman and The Good Place, ended today. The Good Place made me sob uncontrollably and BoJack left melancholy but hopeful. Both were fitting and uplifting (if bittersweet) ends. While The Good Place certainly hasn't been at its peak for the last couple of seasons, if you havent watched in a while I'd say it's worth it for the ending, it's really one of the better finales of any show I've watched. This season of Bojack was unfortunately a little rushed because Netflix cancelled the show early (if it had been 2 full seasons rather than a slightly longer 1 I think they'd have been able to flesh everything out a little better) but as it stands it's still a great end to the show and what they chose to focus on was handled well (and episode 10 and 15 were some of the best episodes of not only this show but all of television imo).

The lead performances are all absolutely gorgeous (Sam Spiro was a lovely addition to this series too...lots more screen time) and hopefully it gives todays youth a bit of hope that they aren’t too depraved.
Started ‘The Stranger’ last night from the pen of Harlan Coben on Netflix. Took approximately 4 seconds to drag me under...twisty turny thriller type shenanigan. Recommended.

I binged Sex Education season 2 until 6am the day it released. I may have a problem. In any case I thought it was great although not quite as good as season 1. I found the side stories of Aimee and Jackson more compelling than the main Otis stuff and the amount of love triangles was irritating and contrived and the ending felt like a lazy cliffhanger which really wasn't necessary. But like I said the side stories were really strong and handled the issues in question delicately and maturely and the show obviously kept my attention enough that I stayed up until a ridiculous hour so it has to get a recommendation from me. |
