Many critics/film historians who are not affiliated with the Oscars generally tend to agree that the Oscars is really a reflection of how Hollywood wants to be seen in that moment, rather than what it actually is. They're very zeitgeist-y in a sense.
Performances aside, I expected Boseman to win because it was the year of the Black Lives Matter movement, so his win would have been very "of the moment". I know that that's cynical, but there are many interesting articles/documentaries/videos on WHY best Actor/Actress/Movie takes the prize, and performance is only one piece of a bigger picture.

I was hoping Oliva Colman would win again, just cos I think she's fantastic! I was also hoping Husavik would win best original song cos I just love it! The performance last night by Molly Sanden, live from Husavik with all the school children in their lopapeysas and the northern lights shining was just incredible! I was rooting for that song too - Fire Saga was just brilliant! Loved her performance too, such a talent. It would be amazing if she could perform at Eurovision next month. I was wishing with heart and soul that Husavik would win at the Oscars, alas not to be and I did shed a wee tear when I saw them all singing under the northern lights Hopefully Eurovision in Rotterdam will give Molly another chance to sing it

I absolutely love Iceland, I think it’s SUCH an interesting and beautiful country. I’d love to go to Husavik one day! I intend one day to drive route 1 round the whole island

. People who can't be bothered watching the whole show will still watch clips online and the results fill newspapers, magazines and the rolling news. It's not an event that exists in order to get ratings for whichever tv network it airs on. Except it is! The payment they get from the network for airing it is the American Academy’s main source of income. They network pays a lot of the rights because of the advertising revenue it generates. Low ratings means the advertising revenue goes down which means the rights are worth a lot less which means the Academy has to find other funding sources... (Why does the multi billion dollar Hollywood film industry rely on TV money for its official industry body, I hear you cry? What a good question....)

Fair enough. I assumed that the members and film studios funded the Academy as they are the ones who benefit from it and tv revenue would cover the costs of the show itself. Though I dare say that would lead to people claiming that the big studios are buying influence. As if they don't anyway.
There are ways to make money from social media, but adverts on YouTube clips feels more grubby than on tv, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
I still say that actual ratings aren't the key sign of success or value of the awards for the industry overall. Oscars are a massive boost to any film.
The industry as a whole makes so much money from the ceremony. Whether it's all of the networks and radio shows talking about the red carpet, and moreso the magazines. That's the show itself - I'm constantly shocked when I read about the money spent promoting a film or actor for the awards. Lots of people make money from it.
