My podcast go to is a guy called Jim Cornette who used to be a wrestling manager. He talks mainly about wrestling but also goes on rants about the pro-life, gun nuts, hillbillies and basically any Trump supporter. His language is very colourful but he does know what he is on about and is hilarious to listen to.

Not a theatre podcast, but my new favourite is Films to be Buried With by Brett Goldstein and there was a lovely part in Kiri Pritchard McLean's episode where they discuss A Muppet Christmas Carol which leads to a mention about the Old Vic's production and two heartbreaking "new" bits in the story which those who've seen it will know.

We've just launched our new podcast OUT FOR BLOOD which deep dives into the history and mysteries of the infamous musical flop CARRIE, which was produced by the RSC in 1988 and transferred for a (very) short run on Broadway. It starred Linzi Hateley and originally Barbara Cook, who was replaced by Betty Buckley. Half the cast was British, half American, in a unique experiment at the time. We have interviews coming up with over 40 members of the cast, crew, creators and others involved in the fascinating history of this show, all presented in an oral history with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Not theatre: been enjoying 'the Battersea Poltergeist' from BBC Sounds, a spooky London tale that is making me question my own non-belief in ghosts!
Theatre: been enjoying 'Out for Blood' about the notorious flop musical Carrie, with lots of funny interviews with cast members who experienced the chaos.

Kerry Ellis has a podcast now (frankly, who doesn’t?) I haven’t played it yet but she chats with various theatre types, Summer Strallen, Don Blacck, Claire Sweeney, Lea Salonga and erm... Jennifer Ellison (that will be 45 minutes on how she got her toes turned out to a full 180 degrees in the Phantom movie).

I'm really enjoying the Socially Distant Sports Bar. They eventually get round to talking about sport but there's a lot of random chat too (often quite rude so definitely NSFW).

Brett is such a terrific host, he seems so warm and enthusiastic about both the films and his guests! I haven't seen Ted Lasso yet but that episode was a good one too, also I liked the one with Mike Jibson (picking out the stagey ones!) hearing him talk about being in Hamilton and Our House. Also Rob Delaney (another great episode) revealed that there may be a West End musical on the horizon for him, so interested to see what that is! |

Jim and Tomic's Musical Theatre Happy Hour is quite good - they don't seem to be making any new episodes but the old ones are available online. Essentially each episode is a deep-dive into the history of a particular musical with lots of well-researched discussion.
They actually cover quite a lot of really obscure musicals as well if that's your thing.

I always struggle with Musical podcasts because most of the ones that are recommended are so overwhelmingly negative. Sometimes the criticisms are fair, but other times it’s catty hosts cruelly ripping apart shows that aren’t actually that bad and taking extremely bad faith takes against them because dunking on a show is more fun than either being positive or giving constructive criticisms.
(I won’t name it but one particular podcast often features the hosts calling the audiences around them stupid for enjoying the show or reading reviews in a mocking tone. They reviewed one West End show and said people around them were dumb for enjoying it like ‘it’s the thing I remember!’ and responding to positive reviews saying ‘west end reviewers have no standards’ (rather than maybe admitting their criticisms aren’t universal and maybe the positive reviews have some merit?)
The only one I’ve managed to stick with has been ‘Musicalsplainin’ - it’s not 100% positive but they also poke fun at themselves and often give decent reasons for criticisms without making fans feel like they’re stupid for liking it.

I listen to a ton of podcasts but the only theatre one I dip in and out of is In The Frame, which is just a bunch of interviews. It's a bit fawning but I've actually really enjoyed it so far, and I don't usually listen to that sort of thing.

I enjoy Page 94 (private eye) and I dip into Matt Koplik's broadway breakdown. Generally though, i just download various radio 4 shows as Ive never really got into pods

- Musicalsplainin - Central conceit is ‘theatre fan introduces musical-hater to musicals’ but it’s often really analytical and thoughtful rather than ‘thing bad’.
TV Show specific:
- The Taskmaster Podcast
- Taskmaster The People’s Podcast (both official podcasts hosted by former contestants)
True Crime:
- Worst Case Scenario - Two comedians discussing cases of amazing survival, rather than murders.

I enjoy the Hit Parade Podcast - it’s about the Billboard charts rather than U.K. charts (usually) but it’s just really well done - lots of research and analysis of musical trends.
A more specific podcast for Robbie Williams fans (not sure how many of them there are here) is Robbie Williams Rewind. Run by a couple of super-fans they go through each album and tour discussing each song, b-side, and tour and have ‘special guest fans’ talking about their own experiences and memories, why they’re and a fan, etc. It’s literally the only podcast that actually talks in detail about his music rather than about the persona or the drama, and has also scored some amazing special guests for interviews, such as his backing singers, musicians, some of his co-writers and his long-term A&R Chris Briggs. And they did get Rob himself for an interview in January.
It’s a really good podcast if you’re interested in getting below the surface of a performance persona - in terms of ‘what is it about this artist that has connected with his audience’, and it terms of ‘what is this person actually like to work with, and how do they actually produce their work’.

Theatre wise I really enjoy 'As the Actress Said to the Critic' with Nancy Carroll and Sarah Crompton.
Non theatre wise I am a big fan of 'Help I sexted my boss' (not one for the innocent) , 'Joan and Jericha' (again rather risque in its comedy) the BBCs 'Uncanny'(all thins supernatural explored).

Kathy Burke’s Where There’s A Will.. might be of interest but it’s like the Off Menu pod in that her guests are mainly comedians (which I find to be a total turn off).
She has an episode where she interviews Jonathan Harvey which I LOL’d at though.

The only podcast I religiously listen to is ‘No Such Thing as a Fish’ where some of the people behind QI present and discuss their favourite fact from the week. One of the regular team is on maternity leave, so they have an interesting range of guests on at the moment.
I also recently discovered ‘My Dad Wrote a Porno’, which I binged as I’m a bit late to the party and the series has ended recently. Really good fun - more about the interactions between the presenters than the actual subject matter.
On the other end of the scale, a friend recommended ‘My Favourite Murder’ and I’m really not getting on with it at all - the two presenters basically read out the Wikipedia entry for a murder while making ‘funny’ asides. My problem is that they find themselves more entertaining than I do, so don’t think I’ll be sticking with it…
