Christmas Strictly was absolutely dreadful, complete waste of time.
Call the Midwife, on the other hand, was absolutely excellent, one of the best Christmas Specials they've done I think.

Loved Gavin and Stacey. What clever writers they are. And the kid, Neil the baby! On twitter it says he is the same kid as the baby was. Can this be true. Anyway, a little star.

A great documentary on BBC 2 about Dolly Parton tonight. I know she did the legends slot at Glastonbury in 2014 but I hope she tours the uk again at some point.
Loved Call the Midwife Xmas special. Great writing and performances from all the cast. The Scottish Hebrides setting was just stunning. Looking forward to the new series in a few weeks time.

From the non-terrestrial tv world, a friend reports they are about to settle down to 'Hamlet.Live.Almedia.Theatre.' (Jessica Brown Findlay, Juliet Stevenson and Andrew Scott), which I believe is the Pinter Theatre transfer. I don't recall knowing a recording existed until today. Pass the chocies ...
It was broadcast on BBC2 in March 2018. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09yj7dz

Loved Gavin and Stacey, on paper this should never work, strong welsh and Essex characters and their idiosyncratic behaviour, but it does a treat. After watching this today after watching the originals, I never knew that all the surnames were named after serial killers, go figure!

Really enjoyed Gavin and Stacey last night. So well written. Even though it's been 10 years none of the actors seem to have aged at all.

I seem to remember from when Absolute Hell was on at the NT that there are a fair few Charles Edwards fans on the board. He was one of the contestants in last night's episode of Christmas University Challenge as were Monica Dolan, Bob Barrett and Catherine Bott - all representing the Guildhall. Good competition against UCL.

I'm finding Christmas University Challenge quite entertaining, and they don't seem to be dumbing it down quite so much this year!

Just watched Paddington 2 on TV. Best thing on tv by far this christmas and the song from Follies at the end was a real treat. We switched it on to have a quick look at what Hugh Grant was like in it & ended up watching the whole thing & really enjoying it, to our surprise.

Good competition against UCL. You can't possibly be referring to me right? Noooooo...
Anyway yeah, Edwards and Dolan graduated at the same time and are very close friends. Whilst they put up a good fight against UCL (someone on Twitter accused UCL of cheating at one stage), I felt bad for Edwards who didn't buzz in at all. Hopefully that was just down to being nervous or overly cautious, but whatever.

Is it from Follies? I hadn't seen follies when is saw Paddington 2. My mother informs me that Paddington 2 is even better than Paddington 1. Except for Hugh Grant being in it. I resisted the need to say Hugh Grant is what makes Paddington 2 better. Now I think of it I think I remember her not liking Paddington 1! The 13 year old wanted to watch Gavin and Stacy as she had seen the advert with James Corden doing step into Christmas and knows who he is having watched those things he does when a musical runs out across on the road crossing? I think she was rather bemused and a lot sailed across her head but got to the end and was like 'what?! You can't end there'. I said we'd waited ten years for that and she looked even more incredulous.

I was disappointed with The Trial of Christine Keeler.
I have long been fascinated by the story - but this was just too disjointed for me. I am not demanding a strictly linear narrative - but this just kept jumping around and whilst I could keep up because I know the history, my housemate was utterly confused by it all.
I am not going to bother with the rest, I fear.

I love Dame Edna and Barry Humphries will always be a legend. That said, that new Dane Edna show just on the BBC was honestly one of the most dire, turgid things I've ever seen on television.

Don't think I ever saw her there though.

I saw Mandy Rice Davies in a play once, years ago. I think it might have been an Agatha Christie at the Pomegranate in Chesterfield.

Hands up if you've ever interviewed MRD ... ME!!!
My first job in London was working in the civil service in a very junior role. In that *professional capacity* I did interview Mandy Rice Davies once - my inbox was a particular postcode. Shen lived at Worlds End (Chelsea) then, maybe the mid 80s.
Particular uneventful occasion. Not the best of situations.

Watching Sound of Music as not much else on. Why is it physically impossible to watch this film without singing at the top of my voice? Or is that just me?

To my surprise, Worzel Gummidge has been the highlight for me. Lovingly brought to life, funny, well acted and with a great score from The Unthanks.
