I posted on another thread a while ago that in an interview with Imelda Staunton she said she was filming Downton Abbey during the day and then bring driven to the Savoy to do Gypsy in the evening so its quite possible especially as she is such a hard worker. Also they may even film series at the same time which sometimes happens in film franchises.

For the life of me I couldn’t remember what she said she was filming when doing Gypsy, to the point I thought I’d made it up! Her role in Downton was very small though, whereas on The Crown she’s the lead. I wouldn’t be surprised if TC does back to back seasons, but it looks like each takes the best part of a year - pushing HD well back into 2022. All in all, Imelda has suddenly found herself with a busy few years lined up. I wouldn’t be surprised if Downton Abbey 2 comes after, and then there’s Chicken Run 2 in the works (although Imelda will probably be replaced for being too old to voice act, much like Julia Sawalha has been).

Wouldn't be surprised if Julia gets re-hired soon with the backlash it is causing. I do hope so - Chicken Run was a childhood favourite and there is zero reason to recast as she sounds exactly the same. Peter Sallis played Wallace (as in Gromit) for 21 years for the same studio - so there’s really no justification.

Through I can understand them getting rid of Mel Gibson due to his offensive comments and other personal issues.

Mel Gibson doesn’t deserve to ever work again after his hideous comments.

Season Five of The Crown will start shooting in June 2021. So either Hello Dolly is happening before or not until 2022 (although The Crown season six is due to shoot in 2022 too).

With the history of Danny La Rue with the role I'd love to see an alternate Dolly like they did with Bette Middler where they cast a male Dolly for two performances a week like Donna Murphy did on Broadway.

A female who has won 2 Tony awards. They needed a great Broadway actress on the days Bette took off.

Forgive me for resurrecting and old thread, what's everyone's thoughts on the chance this will still happen in the next few years?
Our beloved industry, along with everything else has been decimated with this ****** virus, and having been so close but so far with tickets to see Imelda in this last year, with The Crown's filming commitments stretching into goodness knows when, I'm guessing even with a recast we're not going to see this for the foreseeable into 2022 / 2023?

I'd say 2023 at the earliest, maybe 2024 which would be ideal - the show's 60th anniversary...

I'd put some good money on it happening once theatre is going again. I can see us having shows that make us feel good, and if I had to sum up Hello Dolly in one word it would be "happy".
Whether they decide to do it with Imelda or not remains to be seen.

I have it on good authority that this production will not happen at all now.
Can’t say I’m surprised

I really hope they are wrong, as I really wanted to see it. But I suspect it’s missed it’s moment now, mainly because of Imeldas schedule, and theatre availability.

Bette isnt coming. If she was going to come they'd have transferred the Broadway show and not decided it was going to be a £10 set from David Ian and Michael Harrison.
I get the feeling Mr Barnaby is right, and this will just not happen now.

The role isn't hugely demanding vocally. It CAN be belted to the rafters sure, but the acting performance and expression of the songs is more important in my opinion. There are a great many actresses with star power and comic talents who could do it, but it's just a question of finding the one who really "gets" it.
