Opening the season is 101 Dalmatians (16 May – 21 June), a new musical by Zinnie Harris (book) and Douglas Hodge (music and lyrics), based on the iconic story by Dodie Smith. Set in Regent’s Park, the newly commissioned musical is directed by Timothy Sheader and has puppetry designed and directed by Toby Olié (Running Wild). We are also thrilled to welcome back to the theatre set and costume designer Katrina Lindsay (Porgy and Bess), choreographer Liam Steel (Peter Pan, Lord of the Flies, Into the Woods) and lighting designer Howard Hudson (On The Town, Little Shop of Horrors). Also joining the team are musical supervisor and orchestrator Sarah Travis and musical director Tarek Merchant. Casting is by Jill Green, with children’s casting by Verity Naughton.
Public booking 11th October

Ooh this is intriguing, had no idea it was in development. Would love to know how Disney is involved in this, or how they got around rights issues if Disney isn’t involved.
Bets on when we’ll start dream casting Cruella?

Oooh, interesting. One for the families.
Lack of capital letters in the thread title upsets me though.

Weirdly there are at least two previous musical versions of this - The 101 Dalmatians Musical from 2009 (a professional production with no Disney involvement) Disney's 101 Dalmatians for Kids which looks like it's licensed for amateur productions only plus at least four non-musical stage versions by Glyn Robbins (1997), Debbie Isitt (2000), Bryony Lavery (2014) and Sally Cookson (also 2014)! So presumably Disney haven't managed to get hold of the professional stage rights.

Weirdly there are at least two previous musical versions of this Hmm interesting - perhaps the book rights are distinct from the film rights (I don’t know anything about laws around this so not sure how it works) so adaptations from the book are untouchable by Disney?

Yes, presumably - I guess these days Disney would buy the rights to all current or future formats when they buy up a novel to adapt, but they weren't thinking of stage productions back in the 60s. Although interestingly the earliest stage adaptation I can find a reference to is from 1997, which is the year after the live-action Disney version.
The Open Air site specifically says this is an adaptation of Dodie Smith's novel and doesn't mention the films.

Just clocked that the music and lyrics are coming from Douglas Hodge! Didn't realise he wrote, going to check out his material now.

Well colour me intrigued!
This sounds exciting and I will be interesting to see how this is staged! Real dogs, puppets, etc.
Personally I think 101 Dalmatians is a great story. And it's set in Regents Park so being performed in Regents Park is perfect!
I do appreciate we have the upcoming Cruella film with Emma Stone, but i though the 1994 film with Glenn Close was great! 102 Damation, not so but (I guess) this ws a precursor to all of the recent Disney remakes.
I guess Cruella needs to deliciously evil and larger than life.
But iff she sings about spots, puppy pelts and fur coats in the one song, I'll die!
London's drage queens get ready!

Probably a very stupid question but i’m curious: Ive never seen the film or any productions of 101 Dalmatians (but I know the general story). How’re they going to do the show without actual dogs? kids in costumes? Or do they actually do it with really well trained dogs lol? Sorry for being dumb 😂!

It said something about puppeteering earlier but I don't know how they're going to get so many puppy puppets (puppyts?) to represent all of them. I was hoping it would be actual Dalmatians but obviously that would be a nightmare.

Looks like they couldn’t get Vicky Vox so they’ve gone cut price with Baga Chipz instead 😆
