She's also singing "My Man" from Funny Girl on the Strictly results show this weekend.

Interesting mix. I had an awful feeling it would be all pop stuff but so pleased there is some MT stuff in there

I thought it would be standards and songs from her most successful shows. Addicted to Love is a slightly strange choice - more a man's song IMO and always think of the iconic video.
Still want them to do a follow up to Cilla from late 1960's up to when she came back big on the TV in 1980's. Cilla was 26 to 41/42 in this time period, so Sheridan at 36 is right age to play that time span.
They could do later years in a few years time or with an older actress.

And I Am Telling You??? I'm not really sure if any white actress should attempt to sing this, let alone Sheridan who is fabulous but doesn't really seem like the type to carry off THAT song 😬

Some interesting choices... not sure she can pull off the majority of them without some heavy auto-tuning 😬 Also.. and I am telling you? Can't wait to hear it.

agh..Sheridan Smith. I don't understand why England insists on making her a star. I just don't get it. The worse offense was seeing her in Funny Girl, a part that is clearly written for an Ashkenazi Jewess. If this nonsense casting would have happened in New York, New Yorkers would have revolted.
And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going? Is this for real? She must be joking. Oh, honey..we need to talk.

Because I see everything and make up my mind. And I didn't know how inappropriate she was until I saw her in it.

I suspect once the album is out, with the success of the Funny Girl tour mainly being down to her casting, she will probably to a large theatre concert tour in the major cities. Which I don't doubt she would sell out on her name alone if it is one night only shows. I'd certainly go, I think she is fabulous!

I understand if this post also has to be deleted, but with basically 99% of the entire musical theatre canon available to a blonde haired lady on the paler end of the spectrum, it does sit a little funny that she's deemed it fair enough to record And I Am Telling You, which is so famously *not* written for a blonde haired lady on the paler end of the spectrum, especially if you actually consider the show it comes from with particular reference to the song Cadillac Car. Whether it really is a strange decision or not, it's certainly not one I'd ever feel comfortable making for myself, just as I wouldn't feel comfortable recording a cover of Lot's Wife or I Know Where I've Been.

Baemax is so much nicer than and more articulate than I am.
The song I Am Telling You I’m Not Going is specifically written for a black female singer- and it’s known to be a signature song for black female artists. As Baemax suggests, the song is contextually bound. The history of white singers and performers appropriating music that is either black owned or known as signature songs for black artists is long and extensive. The song owns much to gospel music singing traditions that are prevalent in black communities. The thought of Sheridan Smith covering this song, with her weak vocals to begin with, will be a poor imitation of the black gospel experience. This is both tasteless and vulgar, and an embarrassing case of white entitlement and needs to be called out.

See my post a few lines up as it looks as if she is doing a RAH concert. Not sure about a tour though on the back of the album as she is working on a new ITV series the next few months.

It's a bl**dy song at the end of the day, not a political statement. Anyone can sing whatever they want. Songs were never written only for certain people to sing. That's decrimination in itself. I must stop singing along to The Color Purple in future when im in the bath as I'm the wrong colour apparantly.

I... feel like we've literally just explained why the idea of a white person singing a famously black song makes us uncomfortable? Discrimination doesn't exactly cut both ways yet, not while we still live in a society where one skin tone has a clear advantage over other skin tones, and also the point of show tunes is they kinda *were* written for certain people to sing (specific characters, particular voice types, and yes, in some shows, certain skin tones). No one is saying you have to agree with us, but the fact that you don't doesn't automatically render our feelings on the situation null and void.
Also, don't drag bath-time sing-alongs into this, we're talking about recording a song for public consumption. The idea that me humming Ol' Man River to myself as I brush my teeth would be somehow equivalent is a total straw man, and you're smarter than that.

I find it really strange that there is so much bad feeling over Sheridan singing a certain song on her album. Surely she is entitled to sing whatever she likes , whether it be a favourite song of hers or one that means something to her. Was Shirley Bassey wrong in singing As long as he needs me from Oliver when this is associated with a white actress? I always hoped that music crossed such boundaries by its nature and these compilation albums by artists cover the whole range of music and musical theatre.

KevinUK you have said what I was trying to say but far better than I did. My excuse is I'm in bed with a cold....
At the end of the day I am sure there are plenty of us looking forward to the album coming out in a couple of weeks time and also the TV special. Also the hint of a concert at the RAH

Will just say that Smith is on my 'Accepted stray list' that I have with my wife so if she's reading this... ;-)

Anyway, good luck and all that, with the straying. (Not sure how to break this to you really, but... um.. poor Liz died back in 2013...)
