Wasn't too bad on my recent visit. Sound fine. A Wednesday matinee earlier this month.
I see Matilda a couple of times a year, usually a weekday matinee in term time and on a day when I can get the specific front row seat I want at a reduced price. Rarely many children other than in school parties in the rear stalls and circle.
On this occasion two women and four children, aged I'd say between 6 and 12, occupied the seats to my right. Now I would have expected the (presumably) mothers to have the four children in between them but they actually took the two seats next to each other furthest out and the four children were seated with the youngest next to me. Each had a packet of sweets, the women had their wine glasses.
The children weren't at all badly behaved, indeed the little one said hello to me when he sat down. They were a bit fidgety, sang along briefly once or twice, and unfortunately one had a seat which squeaked badly. The two people behind me moved during the interval. I mentioned the squeak to the ice cream seller as he stood next to me, he didn't offer a move, not that I would have accepted that, but said he'd report it. Mums bought each child an ice cream, took one to the loo, and returned with with more bubbly at the end of the interval. One of the mums asked me if I was enjoying the show which was nice.
To see pre-teens clearly having a great time at the theatre makes it worth putting up with a bit of "participation". Their excitement and joy is lovely to see.
I don't think I would have placed my six year old next to an old chap on his own though !
