The front row in manc was full of repeat visitors no doubt in the £12 or £20 deal.. One next to me had seen it 5 times and that was only in week 2. I saw a tweet earlier today by someone who went 9 times 😯 I saw one from someone on their 13th visit

What a shame you missed that TodayTix £25 offer from 2 weeks ago. I don’t recall a huge amount of swearing to be honest. It’s pretty tame. I got myself a ticket in that for the end of November, but didn’t get one for them at the time for them which I am now kicking myself about! To be honest, every time they find something they want to see, I try and take Young to it. I never had the chance to watch any theatre growing up and I want them to be able to see as much as possible. The way arts money has been cut from schools is a scandal and so I try and expose both of my children to as much of the arts as I can. Plus of course it’s an excuse for me to go to the theatre just that little bit more often 🙂 Amen to this! The same. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes I end up booking ‘Be More Chill’.

I've been missing all the enthusiastic posts on here (about the Manchester experience, not the soundtrack/recording) for the last few days so presume it has ended its run there and is having a break before opening in London early next month. However, though I was looking forward to seeing it, I'm becoming increasingly concerned that lack of knowledge of the music and/or dislike of it will be an issue. I've never heard of ANY of the songs mentioned and when I listened to a few online they sounded very generic and forgettable. But maybe there are some better ones in the show itself or they come over more impressively when sung live. Or even fit the show so well that they're enjoyable in that context.
Could anyone who has seen it and was also unfamiliar with the music please say whether this affected their enjoyment?

I can’t fully answer this as I knew some of the music but I felt that I enjoyed the music more in the context of the show because it was less high pitched and not auto tuned like so many of the original recordings were. In pretty much every case, the cast on stage are far better singers than the original artists anyway. So I wouldn’t worry about that overall.
I think that what you will miss out on if you don’t know any of the music is that moment of recognition when you realise how they have fitted the song on but to be honest, that’s it. It actually hangs together really well as a musical so I don’t feel that unfamiliarity with the songs will make too much difference.

I've just scrolled through the songlist, and they are all pretty well known songs from the last 20 years, some really iconic ones. Even if the titles don't sound familiar, I'm sure the tunes will.

I’m not a big pop music listener but I agree, if you don’t know any of the songs in this show you must have been living under a rock/never had the radio on for the past 20 years

Yup, I also deffo think you’ll know some of them. The earlier Britney and Backstreet Boys have been played everywhere!
Anyway, even if you didn’t know a single note, would still be enjoyable. Is simple pop melodies, nothing too hard work.
Also, it’s a show where music, story, performances, sets, lighting etc etc just come together really well. Music here isn’t stuff I’d otherwise listen to much, but is just one component. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
It’s just a fab feel good show :-)

I think the songs would be the least of my worries, but anyone whose going to be annoyed by the mixing up of historical detail eg “but the Eiffel tower wasn’t even BUILT then 😡” etc should probably give it a miss. It’s definitely got some fantastical aspects to it and is very tongue in cheek. showgirl if you got the £25 deal I’d say don’t talk yourself out of it. You may not like it but equally you may because it’s extremely likeable and the performances and staging are top notch. Also there’s going to be a lot of discussion about it on here when it opens in London so at least you’ll be in on it all the goss!

I went into it thinking I only knew some of the songs but actually when they start I realised I knew about 99% of them. They are all songs that have had a lot of airplay over the last twenty or so years and there's no way you couldn't have heard them. And yes they do work in the context of the show whether you know them or not. Interestingly I was looking back at the West End live performance and some of the earlier posters for the show and they both mentioned songs which weren't in it when it was in Manchester. Would be interested to find out why they were dropped.

Thank you all for your replies to my music-related question and BurlyBeaR, I'm certainly not thinking of not going after all; indeed, I'm still looking forward to seeing this albeit perhaps with that slight reservation. Suggestions that I may recognise tunes I wasn't aware that I'd heard make sense, though to say that if not I must have been living under a rock is a little unreasonable. The only radio station to which I listen (if at all) is R4; I don't watch tv and don't have any of those portable music-playing devices some people use as my own preference - not a criticism of others' choices - is to be aware of my surroundings. I probably stopped being aware of popular music back in the late 70's and when I started to take an interest, cassettes were just starting to replace vinyl and no-one had heard of CDs. Sure other older members can relate to those days!

It’s definitely got some fantastical aspects to it and is very tongue in cheek. Ah, another reason not to see it! I am exactly the sort of person who would be annoyed by this. I remember when seeing the Regent's Park Crazy For You production noting that it was anachronistic that the Sydney Opera House was referenced, when the production was set in the 30s & that wasn't built until the 70s. It must have been pointed out to the creative team as the reference was changed later in the run. Sure other older members can relate to those days! I'm not sure if I count as one of the older members, as I wasn't born in the late 70s, but I agree with your general point. I don't think I've listened to pop music deliberately since about the year 2000, although obviously one is subjected to a certain amount of unavoidable exposure with for instance shops playing music. Before anyone asks why I'm therefore reading this thread, I was a fan of Cassidy Janson & Oliver Tompsett back in their Wicked days & would love to see them playing opposite each other again. I've been reading this thread to try to decide if I can put up with the show for the sake of seeing them. However having now watched the trailer that was recently posted I think the answer is no. The excerpts from their scenes that were included looked quite good but they seemed to be in a completely different piece from the other scenes shown, which did not look at all to my taste, & I doubt I'd be allowed to come into the auditorium just for their scenes & spend the pop song sections standing outside in the lobby!

Would Juliet Capulet listening to pop on a pair of rose gold headphones, or a medieval Parisian club scene with bottled alcopops be an issue then Dawnstar? If so, stay away! 🙂

Ok, after all the glowing reviews and after listening to the clips you posted I decided to book for December, front of the stalls. I still doubt I will enjoy it, but hope otherwise. Problem won't be the songs (I'm sure I know quite a few when I hear them and the CD comes out before my visit anyway) or the anachronisms but probably the book...if this is similar to WWRY or BOOH (both shows I consciously avoided) then I will just sit and scratch my head, wondering how intelligent people can enjoy this cr**. But I still live in hope. Anyway, if I don't like it I will blame this board.

Tried to describe it to a mate of mine and came up with a mash up of Hamilton meets Six meets a weird psychedelic trip...it’s bonkers popcorn MT.

I saw this with a couple of my mates when I was back home visiting my fam a few weeks back, and really enjoyed it! Had great energy, lots of humour, and the audience seemed to love it! It’s not trying to be anything it isn’t which I like - sometimes I think shows take themselves too seriously but this definitely doesn’t!
I really don’t know how this show is gonna go in London! I hope it can succeed because there’s def a place for it. I think it will be received positively but the theatre is a large one so it’s going to need great word of mouth and a big marketing drive to really sell it I think. Most of the songs were super recognisable to me, but I wonder if some will be lost on the younger teen audience, but maybe that doesn’t matter, because they’re v catchy for the most part!

At The Exorcist at the Opera House last night, there was a very dramatic moment with a big loud bang and a lone piece of &Juliet confetti fluttered down to the stage.

Big advertising push to schools on this apparently, according to a friend of mine.Glossy brochures have been sent out advertising £19.50 tickets for term-time performances and a free education pack on the web-site.I guess they are aiming to attract those studying R&J with an alternative take on the ending.Jamie did a similar push and their on-line resources aimed at the secondary curriculum are excellent. We are there on Saturday and just hope the joy and energy of the Manc production transfers well. Will a WE audience ‘get it’ and will it sell? Don’t want it to get lost in the mix.Word of mouth will be important.
