Remember when the rumour was that the London production of Legally Blonde would be at the Dominion? I think a lot of Broadway houses are of a much more appropriate size for musicals. 1100-1400 seems to be ideal for most shows but very few venues this size in London.
Of the five London venues with over 2000 seats: Dominion (about to be free, no long runners since WWRY closed) Palladium (only short runs/concerts recently) Drury Lane (refurb after 42nd St to reduce seat numbers. Gallery/Upper often closed during its run) Apollo Vic (Wicked, long runner, selling well at weekends but struggles midweek) Lyceum (Lion King, long runner, selling very well)

I think it will be a while until we see Greatest Showman anywhere on stage, if at all. I think even Dolly with Bette would struggle in that theatre, which is also way too big of a stage. The set design will have to be completely scaled up to fit that mammoth of a stage. Spongebob might be the right fit in terms of scale and size, but that show did so badly in America I doubt they'll take a risk with Dominion. Band's Visit is a totally wrong for Dominion too, and I don't think will generate much business in London to begin with. I think what drives the business to this show on Broadway is that it's set in Israel, and I don't think that would be as marketable in London as it is in New York. Maybe at a Young Vic-type with a guaranteed subscribed audience and a small house, but not in the West End. Sorry to shut down all these ideas. But I think the Dominion is a very tough one to fill with the right show, let alone a paying audience. I agree with this the dominion is huge bat was only half full in the stalls the night I went.

I see this thread has veered back to 'random ideas I quite like the sound of' territory Back to back with ‘I like this show so it should go into the biggest theatre in town because everyone else must like it too’ aka I have no idea what I’m talking about.

‘Bat’ seemed such a great fit for the Dominion simply because of WWRY having succeeded there in the past, and lending itself to very loud noises and scale. Another rock show which also was half empty and discounted in the week but full at the weekend. I’m pretty sure that they knew what they were doing...

Could this tweet indicate a UK production of Comet is still coming? “Secret British Things.”

Could this tweet indicate a UK production of Comet is still coming? “Secret British Things.” I think it would be a serious financial risk on their part if it came over in its Broadway setting.

Autumn 2020 for Mean Girls so a much longer wait than many of us thought.
Theatres needing a show: Dominion: Empty from Jan Gielgud: Company scheduled to close end of March. Back to a play? Shaftesbury: Motown closes April. Refurb ~2 month. Available from June? Piccadilly: Lehman closes August. Savoy: 9 to 5 closes end August. Available September unless it extends.

Well, i fear quite a lot of filler. Tours coming in and so forth. Little else seems ready to come over from America next year and there's little on the horizon so far in terms of any big UK productions stating any intentions or new shows being ready. You have five big theatres there. It will certainly be interesting. mrbarnaby is always on the ball with these things. Maybe he can give us some exclusives as a festive treat?

@andyh all the more reason for us to continue to be grumpy about the lack of a transfer for Fun Home.

Assuming Caroline or Change runs its duration only then Playhouse is also empty from April onwards, is it not?

I did consider that whilst typing but thought it worth continuing with as it's another empty theatre in 2019 still. Concerning, not only because the selection of shows for theatre goers is reduced but that means a lot of people potentially out of work next year. Actors, production staff from their many various departments, musos, casual FOH/Bar staff, etc. Do we think this could be a result of Brexit-gate? Producers (understandably) holding off booking shows until they know what the real risks are and what the country really is in store for?

With competition being a lot lower next year and a venue like the Gielgud being free if there was ever a more appropriate time for Groundhog Day to re-surface, 2019 would be it.

As much as I would LOVE it to happen, one of the reasons Groundhog Day failed on Broadway was because it had major competition from Dear Evan Hansen and Come From Away in that season. Would they really want to try opening in the same year as both of those again over here?

The Savoy’s way too big for Heathers, even the Haymarket was pushing it a tiny bit. Also can you imagine guests of the Savoy coming out of the hotel foyer to see a load of fangirls sprawled across the pavement with their sleeping bags and pizzas waiting for dayseats 😭

Was it out there about a Beaches musical? I noticed Ben Hewis (former WOS news editor and now does video things for shows) tweet today about filming the workshop for it today....interesting it's being developed here and not across the pond.

There IS a Beaches musical. They did a tryout in DC and again in the suburbs of Chicago (the latter with Shoshana Bean in the Bette Midler role). The production from Chicago was supposedly the pre-Broadway run. From what I recall there was an article some time ago saying that it'll now open in London. I've heard samples from the score from a demo they've recorded with the cast of the first run, and the music is really bland. The only good number Wind Beneath My Wings, which is the only song from the movie. In this adaptation the Bette Midler character sings it in a studio in an abridged version. Alysha Umphress sang a killer version of it in the original run.
I would be down for a stage version using the songs from the film, which were terrific, and additional songs to make into a proper musical.
