Alison will be an interesting one but as it is her home town no doubt there will be some local references. I don't know what she is like as an Ad-Libber with the hardcore Weekend Rocky Horror crowd. I saw her in panto a few years ago and she's hilarious and really threw herself into it. 😂😂 I was gonna go to Wimbledon but I hate Dom Holy so I'm good. I've never seen the show live, but seeing that recording of the Playhouse run really put me off because of the way the audience was. But I get that is the fanbase of the show and has been for years, so the recording is fine for me.

I don’t think the average audience is usually as full on as that. Yes people interact at the required points and will get up to dance for Time Warp but whenever I’ve been (which is many over the years) the usual etiquette prevails for the most part. It’s slso very amusing to see what some people dress up as.

From experience if you want a quieter audience then best to go early in the week. Some fans now avoid the weekends as well as it has been taken over by drunken crowds - partly due to the “party night out” marketing

I went to a Friday 5pm showing before that was super quiet so I got appreciate the actual musical rather than it being all being taken over by the audience participation!

It used to be better when you could take rice, water pistols and other bits in with you. But health and safety stopped all that. Now it's tame in comparison.
I'm showing my age because that was a very long time ago.

I'm showing my age because that was a very long time ago. And Bounty bars, if I recall correctly! I first saw it in 1994, with I think Jonathan Morris from Bread as Frank. It was a free for all in those days, and has really tamed down over the years, even with the ad-libbing.

When I saw it in the late 80's, an in house production In Stoke On Trent, it was amazing to see all the paper raining down from the upper levels. A nightmare for theatre cleaners. But back then Rocky Horror was a guaranteed box office winner for any company.

I *think* it was when the word paradise was used, as the slogan for the chocolate bars at the time was something along the lines of “a taste of paradise”. I know by the time I saw the tour again around 1998ish, they stopped us taking in things like rice and water pistols and various other bits and pieces. Now I’m older and wiser I totally get why they stopped them, but the show did seem to shift a little at that point. One of the things I’ve always loved about Rocky is the audience par ticip

The Rocky Horror Show was the one show which in the old days always had bag searches. I've seen the show many times although I choose not to dress up and the weekend evening shows are often when the fan club regulars come out. Everyone knows the lines and it is fun when a good heckle is put in.
The cast are apparently given rules that only the Narrator and Frank can ad lib, I'm not sure if this has always been the case.

Lazers! Wow! Dry Ice to make the lazers show up! Wow! And David Dale...I saw that at the Liverpool Empire many many moons ago, still have the brochure somewhere. To think that this is still doing the rounds is quite something isn’t it?

Under usual circumstances I’m one of the first people to bemoan an audience who aren’t sitting quietly, yet even I accept that the participation element heightens the enjoyment of this show. People usually remain extremely respectful and don’t chat throughout, so because there’s an audience script as it were, it’s a lot of fun. The last time I saw it in Aylesbury we only had two girls who seemed to know all of the callbacks, next time I hope there’s more. You simply can’t go to Rocky Horror and judge those who join in (whilst I’m never brave enough to) as you have to go with it, and rightly so.

Not yet - I won’t be seeing it until it the tour comes further north next year - but the fan sites are saying it’s as good as ever and that Stephen Webb is a great Frank. The production photos on TimeWarp.org.uk look great - it’s clearly the same “party” production set and costumes that have been used for a fair few years now, but as much as I’d love to see something new (more gothic horror, less party) I’d still rather see another cast in the same production than no Rocky at all! I bet the NYE show will be very exciting, my friend went last year and said it was so much fun to ring in the new year with Rocky. Please let us know how it goes and what you think of it, james1969 !

Has this discounted at all in Brighton? Been looking at tickets for Manchester as the husband wants to go (he's never seen it before) and there are loads of seats left but they're not particularly cheap even with my ATG card

Mid week, Gallery front row £15.

ATG should be ashamed of the prices they’re charging at The Theatre Royal in Brighton.
I hadn’t been there in years but went to see Rocky before Xmas and was shocked at the state of the public areas in the place. It’s unbelievably shabby and run down. The less said about the state of the non-functioning women’s toilets the better. Such a shame to see a once grand and beautiful building left to get into that state.
As for the show, I’m not sure what to say. The last production I saw of it was in its original home in the Kings Road, so that was about 100 years ago.
My daughter is a big fan and has seen many subsequent productions over the years though.
The standard of the current production is very low rent. I get that it’s supposed to be kitsch/tacky to an extent, but this looked like a very cheap children’s show.
I have no idea what the thinking was with the costumes for the tiny ensemble, all wearing non-descript black outfits and the ill fitting garb on several of the leads wasn’t much better.
To me, the whole cast looked pained and like they were just trying to do their best to get through the show and avoid getting tangled up in the slash curtain. There was no real sense of fun or brio in any of the performances ( even Stephen Webb who was merely a serviceable Frank with an inexplicable wavering American accent). At one point Rocky was carrying him and came very close to dropping him ( he had to knee him in the back to keep hold of him).
The audience interaction seemed to have strayed quite a way from what I understand from my daughter is the usual super-fan stuff. A LOT of swearing, most of it aimed at Dom Joly, which completely legitimised it for me ( the most enjoyable part of the evening for all the wrong reasons along with Riff Raff &Magenta rendered completely invisible by over enthusiastic use of dry ice).
I would say that they need to get a resident director in there as soon as possible to sort out such a perfunctory effort from the cast and ATG need to put some of their billions into restoring the Theatre Royal to its former glory.

Saw this in Liverpool Empire 15+ years ago and had a marvellous day getting lairy on cider (underage) before going into the theatre in full Frank getup. Don't remember much about the production but the overall occasion stays in my head so must have made an impression.
Returned to this last night in Manchester Opera House, which magically managed to fill 70% of its seats 24 hours before the performance (in the same way Bat Out of Hell did on its opening night in MCR). Visually I knew what to expect having seen the 40th Anniversary simulcast on TV but the set looked ever cheaper and tired. It was obviously well rehearsed as they rattled through the production at an incredible speed -2 hours including the interval! - but seemed a very shallow presentation. Brad & Janet very Glee with Brad's nasal singing a bit arduous to sit through. Frank was ok but his wavering accents were needless and terrible. Rocky's acrobatics were good. Riff Raff the mainstay of the production. Dr Scott/Eddie played by some kid who mustn't be more than 20 was terrible. Out of breath for the entirety of Hot Patootie and the worst dropped voice for Dr Scott going, akin to a GCSE Drama performance. Liz Macdonald as Narrator obviously jumped in for a dress rehearsal that afternoon, heavily reliant on her script and didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. During the curtain call she just stood there side stage right look at everyone else, not knowing what to do. She tried to join in on the Time Warp but didn't know the moves... Who over 35 who hasn't been to a cheesy disco in the 90s doest know the Macarena and the Time Warp? Cringeworthy.
Anyone who's not seen this show would have been so confused as to what was going on in the second act due to the velocity at which they treated the show. Band sounded ok. Lights need refocusing so they're not illuminating the rigging in various parts of the stage and house.
I think they've milked this show for all its worth now and its really showing. It needs to go to bed for good few years and come back re-energised, re-produced and re-directed.

Completely agree with squidward post above. The prices at Brighton Theatre Royal are ridiculous and as Brighton resident I rarely go. I refuse to pay top prices for some tatty tour. I did not see this particular production (because of the prices) but friends told me it was dreadful. Next Christmas season they have Pricilla to overprice and under deliver. Panto days are long over - why? Brighton just gets a 3 week residency now of a touring musical - most of them not even festive! Yes, despite paying a "restoration levy" on tickets for YEARS there has been no investment or even maintenance of the building. It is VERY shabby. It needs a closing and a complete refurbishment! Shame on ATG!

I'm going to see this with my Mam on Thursday and even though I think I know the answer she wants to know if any of the "traditions" still happen. Rice throwing, fancy dress? I have no idea I'm just her 20 year old daughter asking.
