I wouldn't at all be surprised if Dreamgirls is Revival like Cinderella on Broadway... it is technically new to the city but has been a known entity for many years.
In this case, the lineup for the Musicals (New and Revival) will look like this, with those ineligible due to theatre placement or time of opening being removed:
Best New Musical • Aladdin (Prince Edward) • The Go Between (Apollo) • Motown (Shaftsbury) Best Musical Revival • Dreamgirls (Savoy) • Sunset Boulevard (ENO) (??) • Funny Girl (Savoy) • Showboat (New London) • Jesus Christ Superstar (Open Air) • The Threepenny Opera (National) Best Leading Actor in a Musical • Cedric Neal (Motown) • Dean John Wilson (Aladdin) • Michael Crawford (The Go Between) • Michael Xavier (Sunset Boulevard) (??) • Declan Bennett (Jesus Christ Superstar) • Rory Kinnear (The Threepenny Opera) • Darius Campbell (Funny Girl) • Chris Peluso (Showboat) Best Leading Actress in a Musical
• Lucy St. Louis (Motown) • Jade Ewen (Aladdin) • Glenn Close (Sunset Boulevard) (??) • Amber Riley (Dreamgirls) • Sheridan Smith (Funny Girl) • Rosalie Craig (The Threepenny Opera) • Gina Beck (Showboat)
I kept Sunset in as no one seems to know if it is eligible. And if nothing else happened to open that is a Musical Revival, that is the category set. And also that is Best New Musical is set and even has one more place which is sure to be filled.
Don't forget Finding Neverland!

Wait, why is Dreamgirls a revival?

Wait, why is Dreamgirls a revival? I listed it as a Revival because I think it will get the Cinderella on Broadway treatment. It is a known entity and has been for many years, as had Cinderella. So when Cinderella went to Broadway, it was listed as a Revival as it was already a well known thing despite never being performed. I imagine the same will happen here. I am obviously not 100% sure, we shall have to see. But don't be surprised if it is listed as Revival because of these reasons.

Coliseum is eligible through ENO so likely that Sunset will be up for revival plus Close, Xavier etc.
As has been pointed out elsewhere 1984 and This House are not eligible as they are transfers of already nominated shows. Errors mentioned earlier, particularly the erroneously included fringe venues, are still there but Daniel's musical list sorts most of that that out effectively. Not yet fixed, however, Man of Good Hope will be opera or musical and it's still also down as a play, Pacifist's Guide to Cancer is a musical, just look at the publicity, and If You Kiss Me is not a play in a million years, maybe it will be seen as a musical but more likely in the entertainment category.

Let me very clear here, this applies to one person, who I am not going to name.
I don't spend ages compiling a list on both Plays and Musicals and then updating it for someone to plagiarise what I have done and turn it into just a musical dabate, the objective is to give a long list of everything possible on both Plays and Musicals and board members to partition for my information to be withdrawn or changed or board members to give additional information, not for someone to come along and bastardise what I done. Moderators with you consider removing theses posts with these lists in please, as I spent a good time compiling these lists so it is relevant to both genres of theatre?

Well clearly this is aimed at me... I will happily take it down, as I did not mean to offend you and didn't go out with the intent to offend, I would never go out to purposely offend anyone, especially someone who I actually like a lot on this forum. I was just making it evident as to what was eligible and what wasn't so it was clearer for people. If that offended you then I apologise for that.
EDIT: Has been removed by myself to take away any offence, but I cannot get rid of it being quoted. Sorry if it upset you, I have done all I can though.

Next week when I am at a desktop computer, I will do a clean up, hard to do on a Ipad. Thought we agreed on the This House thread that could be nominated for a new play again, but read it again and I read it wrong. I would also add your contribution to this thread has been immense and thank you.

This whole eligibility thing is always confusing, as well as nominee placement. I really just wish they would make any London Theatre eligible, it would make the races a lot more competitive and interesting!

I think the rule for was a show can be eligible if it has done over 30 performances, which I'm sure Sunset Boulevard has so it could very well be nominated - which was why Sweeney Todd a the ENO last year wasn't as it only did 12. For that matter, The War of the Worlds could be nominated also! But I doubt it will...and that's from someone who is a fan of it (but not the Dominion production)!
However if Glenn Close missed out on a large number of performances she'd probably miss out on a nomination like David Tennant did for Hamlet. (I've no idea if she's back in the show yet, all I know was that she was off yesterday and her understudy got booed, nothing more)

War of the Worlds was eligible this year, and unsurprisingly received nothing.

I don't think 1984 is eligible. I believe this return is a transfer of the existing production, so it wouldn't count as a revival, and if it was going to be nominated for Best New Play, surely that would've happened a couple of years ago.

It was nominated for Best New Play in 2014 when it was at the Almeida, but lost out to Chimerica. Surprisingly it appears that was the only thing it was nominated for that year! Also it has been to the Playhouse twice since then and it hasn't been nominated again, not that it should be either. This year's cut off date was 16th February 2016, so that means The End of Longing could have been nominated, but wasn't as it opened 12th February. Motown opened 8th March so that could be eligible for next year, as was The Painkiller which was the 5th March (although I'm not sure if that was the preview or the press night. Doesn't matter either way!). Speaking of The Painkiller, has this actually been performed in London (or anywhere) before Branagh and Brydon did it at Belfast Lyric? If not, shouldn't it be under "Best New Comedy"?

American Idiot won't be eligible as it was on at the Art's Theatre last year. Motown will be eligible. 1984 won't be eligible as it already ran a few years ago, unless it's counted as a revival. I don't think Beverley is eligible as the Olivier's don't tent to like nominating show's that come back to the West End after a little break. The End of Longing isn't eligible, they would've been eligible for the Olivier Awards 2016. Kunal Nayyar is supporting in The Spoils. You may want to change where you've put Jesse Eienberg. I reckon The Painkiller would go under 'Best New Comedy'.

Isn't any acting performance eligible officially even a take over in a role. As Mel C got nominated for Blood Brothers. I imagine therefore Beverly Knight would be even if the Bodyguard is not.

That's really bizarre, replacements are usually not considered for awards. Perhaps they just thought that was the performance of a lifetime or something? The Olivier's make up the rules as they go along, they really need to change how they run things.

Robert Lindsay won in 1997 for Oliver! after Jonathan Pryce originated the role, as did Alex Jennings in 2002 in My Fair Lady, again after Jonathan Pryce.
As for Beverly Knight, I'm not sure because if she was to be nominated wouldn't it have already happened for when was playing the role at the Adelphi? If she hadn't played it then, they maybe her performance at the Dominion would have been nominated. Even for a replacement to be nominated, I imagine it must be because of an exceptional performance, or a lack of competition.

I hope she'll be up for it this year as its been like 2 years since the west end saw it and she is fab. i think she should've won for Memphis!!

After seeing Sheridan in Funny Girl, just give her the Olivier. She 100% deserves that award after the performance she gave and I imagine it will happen for her.

Can we get some official clarification; are venues like the St James, Arts and Charing Cross actually eligible? They aren't - to the best of my knowledge - SOLT houses, but then the King's Cross has somehow blurred the lines.

I would say no that these aren't eligible theatres as there hasn't been many nominations recently from these venues.

In which case shows at the Duchess, Criterion, Vaudeville or Trafalgar Studios wouldn't count, no?
