Other observations.
Harry Potter has been nominated for 11 awards in total, baffled how it could get nominated for best choreography. HP will clean up.
This House has been nominated best revival, stated on this thread somewhere, that its not eligible as no different than the National production.
Also Victoria Hamilton-Barritt been nominated for best supporting, previously stated on here that the Arts Theatre isn't eligible.
Glad the Olivier Committee aren't involved in football, they love shifting the goalposts.

Glad the Olivier Committee aren't involved in football, they love shifting the goalposts. Anyone who saw Murder Ballad though, would agree that Victoria 100% deserves that nomination! It does make me wonder though, that she could well actually win it now that she is nominated, as she got the amazing reviews and she was brilliant, and good enough to get nominated even though a lot of us thought she wouldn't because of eligibility/ That is one of the most competitive category of the night.
Also, the reason my quotes are looking messed up, is because I try to delete what isn't needed in fear of getting yelled at for having too long a quote again. So any of my posts looking messed up, you know why and whom to blame.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the nominations for once. I mean, a few oddities, but we all know the Oliviers make the rules along the way. I'm very very glad for the Travesties and The Glass Menagerie love, they're two outstanding productions. I'm particularly happy for the best supporting actor nods to Freddie Fox (whom I adored as Tzara) and Brian J. Smith (who delivers the best performance, Cherry Jones included, in the play). I'm also very glad they remembered of Rebecca and Haydn Gwynne, she really delivered an outstanding performance... Although I have to say I'm sorry Nick Holder didn't get a nod for supporting actor in a musical, he stole the show.
On the petty side, I'm not surprised by Gemma Artenton and Michal Xavier's "snub", their performances were very disappointing.

My main gripe is of course Sixpence. I honestly think that the Choregoraphy was stronger for Sixpence than Groundhog Day. And I haven't seen the other two, but I have a sense it is a bit shady to put Red Shoes in Choreography than Dance Production. I don't understand the logic behind this at all and agree that Half a Sixpence should have been nominated. I've seen Red Shoes, it's ok not great, I've seen better stuff from Matthew Bourne that hasn't ever been nominated. So what does it mean by "Theatre Choreographer" and "Dance Production" does that mean Red shoes isn't a dance production but theatre? Does it mean none of the productions in the dance category are ever going to be nominated for choreographer? Confusing. Also Victoria Hamilton-Barritt been nominated for best supporting, previously stated on here that the Arts Theatre isn't eligible. I've not read the whole thread so don't know what was discussed but the Arts Theatre is an affiliate that pays the levy so productions can be in the main categories but not in the affiliate one ( solt.co.uk/about-london-theatre/solt-member-theatres/ ) I am very happy about the Groundhog Day nominations though, loved that show.

Gina Beck isn't happy at all about Show Boat missing out on Choreography. She was robbed of Best Actress though.
Does anyone get the ever so slight sense some shows got a couple extra nominations than they maybe should of done, but got them just for the sake of getting them and leaving some of the better choices out?

Yes, I think it's as you suggest that The Red Shoes is not considered as Dance by the Oliviers. Which makes sense because it is a show that tells a story and most of the choreography serves that purpose and little is pure dance. Best Theatre Choreographer is, I think, as you suggest, for choreography outside shows eligible for the Dance awards.

I'm really happy with pretty much everything that's happened.
Although I don't get the Girls best actress thing. Very odd. Very happy for Rebecca Trehearn and VHB. And also really cross that Half A Sixpence didn't get choreography nom !
It's a mixed bag, some surprises, but virtually everyone that deserved it got it (minus a couple - Gina Beck should of had a Best actress nom too...)

In fairness it was a huge year for Choreography. ... but when you eliminate the nominee with the Best Choreography of the Year from the Choreography category, its not great really is it.

The Music award is ridiculous. It's such a cop out. They need to have separate categories for Best Music and Lyrics, Best Book of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Musical Director/Supervisor, and then yes a Best Ensemble of a Play and Best Ensemble of a Musical award. It's always a hot mess at the Oliviers. It took them 20 years to realise that they should split the supporting musical trophies into gender-specific ones. Oy!
Why the f@ck is Cinderella nominated for 3 awards?
And if the races were so crowded, yes, why not extend the number of nominees to 6 or 7 as opposed to 4 this year (it was 5 in most cases last year) - I'm perplexed!

Yes the Oliviers are total snobs; they care much more about plays than they do about musicals, and they would much rather nominated 4 plays for choreography or achievement in music over 4 deserving musicals if they could… So this is why Harry Bastarding Potter is nommed for choreography over Sixpence… Oy! (again!)

I'm struck by the dearth of nominations for actors in productions of new plays and musicals.
I could be wrong about my count. The 4 nominees for Best Actress are all in revivals. 3 of 4 Best Actor nominees are from revivals. 2 of 4 Best Supporting Actress nominees are from revivals (lumping the Ladies of Succor into one). 3 of 4 Best Supporting Actor nominees are from revivals. Best Actress in a Musical - well, The Girls is new and Dreamsgirls/Funny Girl are "new" to London but are not exactly "new" shows, so is that only 1 of 4 from revivals or 3 of 4? 2 of 4 Best Actor in a Musical nominees are in revivals. 3 of 4 Best Actress in Supporting Role in a Musical are in revivals. And 2 of 4 (or maybe 3 of 4 depending on how you count Dreamgirls) Best Actor in Supporting Role in a Musical are in a revival.
Looks to me like 10 (or 13) of the 32 nominations are from productions of new plays and musicals and 22 (or 21) are for roles in shows that have been previously produced.
I've not compared this to prior years. But, it seems like the Oliviers are celebrating roles more than performances? This is not to take away from today's actors tackling great roles and doing great work. It just may be the case that they just don't write them like they used to.

Happy for Brian J Smith (and over the shark moon that The Glass Menagerie got as many nominations as it did. In love with that production!).
Overall I think this year looks like a bit of a mess though. Multiple people in one nomination is not fair at all. Why not nominate all of the Dreams as well? Or all the kids from SoR as has previously been suggested. They'd have been better off bringing back the ensemble award.
Surprised by the lack of awards for Lazarus. I'd have thought Bowie/the on stage band were on lock to not just get nominated for the Achievement in Music award, but also win. Also wanted Michael C Hall and Sophia Anne Caruso to be nominated at least, and something for that video design/lighting too.
Hmm.... it's been an interesting year, that's for sure.

I must admit, I do look at Harry Potter in the Choreography category and think "hmmm... is this actually a deserved nomination, or is this just a nomination given for the sake of being given, because it is Harry Potter?"

They nominated Potter everywhere they could, so yeah it's basically just a checklist thing.
But yes to reiterate, the whole stuffing seventeen actors into one slot is so demeaning to the hundreds of actors eligible. It's laughable, actually.

Well Steven Hoggett did previously win the Best Theatre Choreographer award in 2009 for Black Watch, so I guess the people who come up with the nominees (and John Tiffany, obvs) really appreciate what he brings to a production even if it's not a musical. Choreography snobbery can cut both ways, guys.

Choreography snobbery can cut both ways, guys. Being a play or a musical isn't an issue for me. The whole reason I said I wonder if it is deserved is because I haven't seen it so I can't judge whether it deserves it, but with Harry Potter getting so many nominations, and everyone making a big deal about it breaking the record for most nominations, it makes me just wonder whether it deserves to be nominated over other shows or not. Obviously I can't judge because I haven't seen it, but I can still wonder.
And its not even anything against Steven Hoggett, he is a brilliant Movement Director (as he is credited for Harry Potter!). I have seen several of his works (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Lovesong, Othello, Beautiful Burnout and Let The Right One In) and have loved them!

I think the 2 best actress categories will be the most hardly fought races this year… I mean talk about competition… Glenda Jackson (could win because it's her big hoopla return), Cherry Jones (could win because she's giving the performance of her life and she's Cherry F@cking Jones), Ruth Wilson (totally reinventing Hedda for this generation) to begin with… then Amber Riley (she's playing an award magnet role), Glenn Close (respected Hollywood a-lister, won a Tony for the same role 20 years ago), Sheridan Smith (wins an award every time she wakes up in the morning regardless of any mitigating circumstances)… I mean I'm exhausted just thinking about them.

I actually think Sheridan is going to win. She tends to get a lot of un-needed crap on here so I can hear people groaning. But she was brilliant in Funny Girl. She had emotional and mental issues that lead to her having some time out. She came back just as good and now has headed out on tour even though she has just lost her father. I think all signs are pointing to her winning at the minute, as she has the successful performance and the circumstances around it to make her the most likely winner.
But it is hugely competitive.

Well you know I know the Olivier Awards don't really matter anymore and they aren't that important but really, all these nominations for Harry Potter and the cast of 'The Girls' getting a Best Actress nomination (when they are clearly not all leading) is a big old crock of wet, rancid excrement that is clearly there to pander to the lowest common denominator. If this is the best of theatre for the past 12 months, I'd hate to see what they came up with as the worst.
